  1. One of the folks in my council suggested that I might want to help out and attend NOAC on the next shot in 2009. Has enyone ever been? What is it like as an adult? What are the NOACs like? I am interested but know little about them and have had a challenge finding out much about them. Also, I am not a Vigil honor either.
  2. I have been a long time subscriber of a publication called "Scout Memorabilia", previously published by Harry Thorsen. It has been out since the late 60's. Has anyone headr of it or has been or are a subscriber? I would be interested in chatting about that publication. It has offered much towards publicizing scouting history.
  3. Thanks. I especially liked the Western Regions website. Does anyone have the links for the Venturing and Sea Scouting Regional (I think these are unofficial) websites?
  4. Earlier today, I posted as to what "National Camp School" was. In a nutshell it is a training administered by the region. It got me wondering, what do the BSA regions do? Granted I am sure they are there for administrative purposes since there are over 300 councils, but it got me wondering. What kind of things do the regions do and what services are offered by the Regions? I have been around a while, but it seems a bit of a mystery to me. I am sure there are folks here that have had experience at that level and know, so can anyone shed some light on that. I have also heard
  5. Now we are over 20 of those knots =) #1 - Air Scouting/Air Exploring ACE Award Knot #2 - Explorer Silver Award Knot, used for * Explorer/Air Explorer Silver Award * Explorer Achievement Award * Explorer G.O.L.D. Award * Explorer Scout Ranger Award (when its unique knot was dropped early one) * Air Scout/Air Explorer Ace Award (again, when its unique knot was dropped early on) #3 Arrow of Light Knot #4 - Silver World Award Knot #5 - Scoutmaster Award of Merit Knot (also used as or known as) * Varsity Scout Co
  6. What is this? I have heard of it and seen people wearing the patch for having attended, but have never seen it listed as a training event anywhere. Curious. Anyone have any info or experience on that?
  7. Hmmm...I think this is where we are so far... #1 - Air Scouting/Air Exploring ACE Award knot #2 - Explorer Silver Award knot, used for * Explorer/Air Explorer Silver Award * Explorer Achievement Award * Explorer G.O.L.D. Award * Explorer Scout Ranger Award (when its unique knot was dropped early one) * Air Scout/Air Explorer Ace Award (again, when its unique knot was dropped early on) #3 Arrow of Light knot #4 - Silver World Award knot #5 - Scoutmaster Award of Merit knot (also used as or known as)
  8. "But why do we have to put up with this in your face bull?" Personally, I am tempted to bite and offer some snappy snide remark, but honestly, that would not buy anything but contempt. In an effort to offer worthwhile discussion...If someone puts that on thier uniform, I am sure that most any other scouter they encounter is going to ask them what that "Knot" is about. If they have to explain that to another scouter and it gets to thier council, there is no telling what will happen to that scouter and thier membership. I have no clue, but I for one am not going down that road personal
  9. Something different ... We had a scouter in our council establish a scholarship trust for an annual scholarship award for scouts in the council. The thing I found most interesting was that they did not just focus on Eagle Scouts, but left it open so that Girl Scouts, Venturers, Sea Scouts, Explorers, and Boy Scouts were eligible and could apply. Personally, I know that I need to do the same thing. My last update is a bit old.
  10. Congratulations. Having 3 sons myself, but much younger at the moment, I look forward to the moment when they get thier Eagle awards as well. (It's a family tradition that if you are a boy and want your drivers license...you'll get it when you get your Eagle Scout. It has been a strong motivator! It worked for my parents!) Best regards, Michael
  11. Ok, so recently I have been working on a display of Square Knot recognition Knots for an upcoming council training event. Oh my gosh...there are like a million of them!!! LOL So I thought it would be fun to play a little game. The rules are simple: 1) Each post can only identify 1 (ONE) Square knot (Plenty enough to go around for everyone!). 2) Current and retired knots are fair game, but let's to keep this to Official BSA Knots only. (We could go on forever on "Unofficial" or "Private" issue items". 3) Any background, personal comments related to, information on how t
  12. ...I gotta admit that I am glad to see this discussion pick up. These are the same exact things that we have been discussing in my district and trying to make sense of. And that's kinda what I though would be the case accross the country when I posted this as a recently returning UC... Michael

  14. Is anyone up for a round of the Gilwell Song? Here's a Cut and Paste, insert your critter ... I used to be a CRITTER, and a Good Old Critter too, But now I've finished CRITTERING and I don't know what to do. I'm growing old and feeble, and I can CRITTER no more! 15. Reference: http://www.scouting.org/nav/enter.jsp?s=xx&c=ds&terms=mazucca+speaker "...We are launching tonight a national BSA speakers bank. Members of the speakers bank will be nominated by Scout executives and our goal will be to have a minimum of 1,000 speakers recruited into the program by the end of this year. I am also delighted to announce our four charter members of this group President Rick Cronk. Commissioner Don Belcher. Rabbi Peter Hyman. And former national commissioner, Earl Graves. Not a bad start. All tools, templates, and resources for these spe
  16. ...a bit of a twist on this thread, but where do you get the yellow (or Gold) loops? I was chatting with a scouter last night about the loops and he said that he has been doing area stuff now for a while and had been looking for some. I just assumed that if you are asked to be on a area, regional, or national position, they give you that stuff. He said no. I said, go get them from www.scoutstuff.com and he said they are no there. So I said how about the scout shop. He said, they don't have any. Now, I am guessing that as an area, regional, or national scouter...that would be a registered
  17. Whatever happened regarding the Execitive officers? Last I saw was that the slate on that (01/27/07) did not pass...something like 20 for and 60 or so against. Pretty decidedly against. And then national reprised those present for not approving. (Sounds a little like kids being admonished for playing with matches...I was a bit surprised on that one.) Anyways (sorry about the rambling), I am guessing that has since been resolved, but would be interested in what happened there. Can anyone provide an update there? I have been following this for a while and am interested as to how that
  18. That would be the ...BSA Speakers Bank. As far as I know, no knot has been un veiled. Bob Mazucca (CSE) mentioned the possibility of one in his "state of the union" address at a national meeting sevearl months ago. However, I do not know of anything official yet. Very well could be at some point though. This will be for individuals that are recommeded by the Council SE, accept, and ...do something or longeveity or something. Vague, but thats all I know from our SE.
  19. I know I have seen this one guy wear Purple loops (Same color as the scout patch above the left pocket). Seriously. What is that one for? I don't have a clue and I did not see that one mentioned in this thread. Or is that some homemade loop? Anyone?
  20. Sorry, I do not have that. [On a side question though...I have been working on attempting to put a list of councils together with thier website link. Do you have anything like that or know where I might find something like that?] Best regards, Michael
  21. I am looking to try and find materials for a sessions at our local Pow Wow training day this year. Does anyine know of any materials available on the internet or have anything I can use? I am hoping to find some stuff so that I do not have to put the material together from scratch. I am looking for anything that I can find to include official awards (knots, veteran status, misc awards, eyc) as well as un-official awards (Unit, District, abd Council recognition other that the BSA endorsed awards). Now, on the knots...when I look at the National site...there is no specicic reposit
  22. I am finding that different packs take a different take on that. Look ath the following thread... (When are ranks awarded?) http://www.scouter.com/forums/viewThread.asp?threadID=168710 There is a "book" answer and then there is a "tradition" answer, and likely several other answers along the way as well. From a good ol fox, Michael
  23. Eamonn...that was a great post. Thanks for sharing that. I am glad to hear that you and your nomineee both received the recognition =)
  24. Eamonn..."Sadly it''''s not working and I happen to think it''''s broken beyond repair. In our area we just don''''t have the man-power to be able to provide anything that looks like what the BSA seems to think Commissioner Service should be. A quick look at the Fall Commissioner Newsletter shows that Nationally we have 114,076 units and only 19,867 Unit Commissioners. We need to recruit 38,026. Somehow I just don''''t see that happening." Other than the disparity between commissioners and what national believes that we should have as commissioners, what do you mean that ..."It''s broken
