  1. I was reading yesterday where somebody suggested that younger siblings can go on a Webelos Den Camping trip. I guess I always assumed that this would not be acceptable. What do most Packs/Dens do? Our Webelos program has historically not done and Den camping. There have been some camping with Boy Scouts, but most boys do a day program with Boy Scouts. I am trying to get more camping going on the Webelos level, both as a Den and with Troops. We have a few Leaders who do have younger kids, and I wanted to get the details straight. I am pushing to get a handful of leaders (WDLs, asst WDLs
  2. That is great. I'll have to get my list together now.
  3. Our pack has dinner (potluck Taco bar this year), some awards, and then lots of games (Cubs favorite part). We have a photo station with the theme background for a keepsake. Great way to celebrate.
  4. I love my ALPS Mountaineering 2 man Taurus Outfitter after just a few outings. Can't wait to use it more. I signed up for a Coleman non-profit number, but I haven't used it. I was wondering if there is an issue for individual use versus for the scout unit. Have you used it alot?
  5. Go to scoutdirect.com and register for the 45% scout discount and the $89 gets cut down quite a bit. I have been very happy with the AlpMountaineering gear that I have purchased and with their support. Great deals. Sometimes you can get an even better deal with the sample sales that they have (sales staff demo products).
  6. As a first year Cubmaster, I have been learning more and more about the Patrol Method of Boy Scouts. As an ACM last year, I did try to add more responsibility in the Pack meetings for the oldest Webelos (1st year Webelos take over responsibility after AOL/crossing over). I hadn't thought of the idea of having the SPL and PL at the crossing over, but I like it. I don't think I would want to SM to not be there, if possible, mostly for the parents. I think the parents would wonder why the SM wasn't there as their son was crossing into that troop. I am looking forward to seeing our Webelos ta
  7. Our race is suppose to be tonight, but the snow storm has closed school since Tuesday and we use the school Auditeria (cafeteria/auditorium) for our race. Another week of preparations...
  8. I got my invite today for PTC. It is excited to get the opportunity. Unfortunately, my summer vacation time looks like it is tied up... 4 days for Cub Scout Adventure Camp, 1 week for family vacation, and 1 week for Wood Badge. I am hoping that I will be invited again next year so I can plan ahead. With all that I have read about PTC on this forum, I really want to get out there. My son will be a 2nd year Webelos by then, so he will have a blast. I still have to convince my wife. Is there good way to make sure that an invite comes in a subsequent year?
  9. Our Council as Camp Conservation Day twice a year to help maintain the camps. This is a great project for World Conservation while helping the Camps. Check with your District for similar events.
  10. Pinewood Derby week is here. I helped another Pack setup their track yesterday so that we can borrow it on Friday. I even got to help fix the finish line, so I am very familiar with their system. It was exciting watching the scouts in a neighboring Pack show up, so I can only imagine how much fun we will have Friday night. We do our check-in on Wednesday to limit our Friday evening timeslot. PWD was always my favorite part of Cub Scouts MANY years ago.
  11. My son has a requirement to read 20 minutes every night. We convinced him to increase his time goal. Since he can read anything, I remarked that he can read from his Bear Book as part of his nightly reading. We don't do it every night, but he likes to get me to listen to his reading and then we discuss some of the achievements and make plans for the achievement that require more than a discussion. Too bad more scouts/parents don't do this.
  12. I like the rewording idea. Some parents are sensitive about bending the rules. What sort of example does that leave our kids, to bend the rules when it is convenient? Offer the updated rules as a solution so that your concerns don't get viewed as complaining. Action is problem solving!
  13. In our Pack, it depends on the Den. Some Dens have mostly Dad's involved, some Dens have mostly Moms, and some Dens have a good mix. I have seen a good mix of gender with all of the Cubmasters who attend Roundtable, too. When I was a Cub in the late 60's, the Wolf and Bear Den Leaders were Den Mothers, but the Webelos Den Leader were always the Dads. Moving to Boy Scouts, all the involved adults were Dads. Quite a mix these days.

As my 2nd year as a Pack Leader, and my first year as a CM, I look forward to having relationships with multiple troops. The more variety of Troops helps the Webelos to choose what troop will be best for them. We are not directly connected to any troop, so maybe it is different within a shared CO.
  15. Same website, different page: http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/more/folds.htm (This message has been edited by rjscout)
  16. I think that too many people read a BW reply, and if it isn't a 100% 'Go For It', it is viewed in a negative sense. I don't think that Bob is trying to deter speeglevillemom, but trying to have her look at various views that may be overlooked. The more input that speeglevillemom has from various angles, the more prepared she will be for a GREAT Day Camp. It will also help to prepare future Day Camp directors. Hats off to Speeglevillemom for jumping in. Best of luck to you. BW, I do appreciate your view from angles that are not always thought of.
  17. I thought that this would be a cool puzzle to use. I love games of the mind. When I saw the solution page, the first thought in my mind was 'swastika'. The solution does look like a backwards swastika. It may not have been intended that way, but I don't think I would want anything to do with that symbol.
  18. My son and his Den received the Leave No Trace Awareness Award last year as Wolf scouts. This year, to receive the Outdoor Activity Award as a Bear, the rank requirement is to receive the LNT. I am very much in favor of going through the requirements of LNT at each rank, so we did just that. What do other Packs do for the LNT award for multiple years? Do you give the patch for each year? It would be great to have a rank-LNT patch to go along with the main LNT patch. I don't see it as necessary to have the full patch awarded each year. We acknowledged the fulfillment of the LNT req
  19. That sounds like a GREAT time. I hope there are some troops in my area that do something like this next year when my son becomes a Webelos Scout. I may try to use part of your list when we start our Webelos camping in June.
  20. Since we are back with talking about Alps backpacks, does anyone have much to say about the Alps Red Tail 4900? They have a good sale going on right now and I was wondering how they compare to the Denali and the Cascade.
  21. The summer camp requirement is easily overlooked. I was sure that my son earned the Outdoor Activity Award as a tiger, but then I realized that he had to go to Day/Twilight camp or resident camp during the summer. Most of our boys complete enough of the other requirements, by rank, to achieve the award, if they would have gone to summer camp. I went as a leader. They are missing out on a lot of fun.
  22. The Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award is a COOL award that we are pushing strongly. The toughest part, really, is satisfying the summer camp portion. It isn't difficult, it is just that a lot of boys don't go to summer camp. We are trying to rectify that in our Pack. But what about the official word on wearing the Whittling Chip patch on the right pocket (not flap)?
  23. I thought that the Whittling Chip patch could be worn on the right pocket as a temporary patch. I can't find the Whittling Chip under scouting.org, but I can find it at http://www.usscouts.org/advance/cubscout/whittlingchip.asp The Official BSA Whittling Chip for Cub Scouts and Webelos Scouts is a Wallet Card (No. 34223A) and/or Patch (08598) The Whittling Chip patch is considered a "Temporary Patch" and, if worn, should be worn centered on the RIGHT Pocket of the Cub Scout or Webelos Scout Uniform Shirt. It should NOT be sewn on a pocket flap I have heard of people sew
  24. Some Councils and Districts do not allow for the online NLE. I found one that was identical to what I attended last year, other than the interactions with other new leaders and the instructor, but it was not allowed by my council. I am told that National is looking at an online NLE that should be accepted by all councils.
  25. It was mentioned that the Cub Scout District events are also dropping in numbers. We had our Cub-O-Ree a few weeks ago and we doubled in numbers from last year. I enjoy the District Cub-O-Ree, the Council Spring into Camping, and our own Pack Camping, for various reasons. Our fall Spook-O-Ree was also a phenominal success this year, growing from last year. I can't speak of the Boy Scout level. the boys are busy with a lot of other activities, but this year has shown a lot of growth and excitement. rj
