  1. We often tell the new Scout that the square knot symbolizes joining and call it the "joining knot", later the Second Class Scout learns the sheet bend is the "joining knot". I like @The Latin Scot knot symbolizations - the bowline as the "rescue knot", maybe tautline hitch for camp repair service, timber hitch for trail service,.... ...symbolism follows function...and all of a sudden the Knots become fun again. Another $0.01,
  2. USC ‘s $1.1-Billion Payout The settlement will be paid in two installments, in August 2021 and August 2022, the lawyers said. The university plans to pay out the settlement "largely through a combination of litigation reserves, insurance proceeds, deferred capital spending, sale of non-essential assets, and careful management of non-essential expenses," USC President Carol L. Folt said in a letter to the school community. "No philanthropic gifts, endowment funds, or tuition will be redirected from their intended purposes," she said. https://abcnews.go.com/US/breaking-university-southern-californias-11-billion-sex-abuse/story?id=76713012 https://about.usc.edu/files/2020/07/USC-2019-Annual-ReportFINAL.pdf

  4. ...from grey-beard to greenhorn... must be Spring. Let us not get ourselves tied up in knots. Speaking of "Knots", why not other knots besides square and overhand? My $0.01,
  5. Unsettling phrases "all that was legally required", "moral obligation to contribute" ... just doesn't seem the phrases scouts or scouters would use when "helping other people..." My $0.01
  6. Mar. 25, Maine — Pine Tree Council President Jack O'Toole told scouting parents this week that the council is selling Camp Gustin in Sabattus and Camp Nutter in Acton to raise money for its share of a Boy Scouts of America fund for victims of sexual abuse. O'Toole wrote. "We have been informed that we will be responsible for a very large cash contribution to go into a 'victims fund.' To put it into perspective, the amount the council will need to contribute will be much more than the total amount that Pine Tree Council has raised in a year." ...more at source link: https://news.yahoo.com/boy-scouts-selling-sabattus-camp-223000285.html https://www.sunjournal.com/2021/03/25/boy-scouts-selling-sabattus-camp-gustin-to-raise-money-for-abuse-victims-fund/ Separately earlier this week, a deal to purchase a third Pine Tree Council property, Camp Bomazeen fell through. Back in July, Pine Tree Council decided to sell Camp Bomazeen to raise funds to keep the council afloat. The council’s vote grew from an emergency task force’s recommendation to sell the property to raise money to help address the council’s bleak financial situation, which was made worse by the coronavirus pandemic forcing the cancellation of many Scout activities and fundraisers. https://www.centralmaine.com/2021/03/21/potential-sale-of-beloved-belgrade-scouting-camp-falls-through/
  7. Seems whoever meant compound bows as that is what Genesis manufactures. "According to an affidavit of probable cause, Pennsylvania State Police in DuBois responded to the Boy Scouts of America Camp Mountain Run gun range on Mountain Run Road in Huston Township on Feb. 8, 2020 for a reported burglary. Through investigation, it was discovered that four Savage .22-caliber rifles, two Remington 20-gauge shotguns, two Genesis original crossbows, four Tippmann paintball guns and four Co2 cylinders were stolen from the property, the affidavit stated." http://www.theprogressnews.com/news/crime/penfield-man-allegedly-steals-weapons-from-boy-scout-camp-mountain-run/article_1004e409-1e82-5e46-a744-f502c41e3820.html
  8. No we appreciate the reports. Thanks. We too noticed the slow performance yesterday. Terry is working the problem... @MattR@John-in-KC
  9. The Suffolk County Council (NY) announced this week it would sell its 14,400-square-foot headquarters in Medford to help fund the settlement. "The building is the largest unrestricted asset we have and is debt-free," David Hunt, president of the council, said in a statement. "We are confident of our ability to secure replacement office space for council operations that will allow us to continue all our programs uninterrupted. The sale proceeds will hopefully allow us to meet the needs of the bankruptcy settlement." Source: https://www.newsday.com/long-island/boy-scouts-sex-abuse-claims-nassau-suffolk-1.50192369
  10. Back in the day, this was just what boys did. Usually we went to top, if we stopped short of that, it was to build a tree house. No Tell, Show, Do involved. Boys climbed trees, dogs wagged their tails...
  11. 2019. All martial arts Page 41-42 The Boy Scouts of America prohibits the following activities (with exceptions in italics): .... 13. Activities where participants strike at each other, including martial arts, boxing, combat games, gladiator games, and reenactment activities such as live action role-playing games (LARP) and Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) activities (exception: tai chi) https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/34416.pdf
  12. Update: 03/22/2021 Police say a Penfield, PA man, Andrew Cole Shaffer, 26, got into the camp sometime between Jan. 18, 2020 and Feb. 8, 2020 where he removed four rifles, two shotguns, two crossbows, four paintball guns and four carbon dioxide cylinders." Shaffer is charged with burglary, criminal trespass, six counts of theft by unlawful taking, and receiving stolen property, all felonies: criminal mischief, five counts of theft, unsworn falsification to authorities and receiving stolen property, all misdemeanors. During centralized court on Friday, Shaffer waived his right to a preliminary hearing, sending all charges on to the court of common pleas. He remains in the Clearfield County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail. More at source link, where you can read how a BB gun was used during break-in, how a civilian used Facebook to find suspect, and how DNA testing lead to arrest, but you will not find out why paint guns were at a Boy Scout camp. https://gantdaily.com/2021/03/22/penfield-man-facing-charges-for-break-in-at-boy-scouts-camp/
  13. The $580,000 amount (from sale of Glacier Edge Council camp, contributed to Victims Fund) "was determined by the national organization based on the number of victims in the area (95?), available assets and when the abuse occurred, among other factors". so about $6K/victim ... from local council? Coincidence?
  14. Follow-up Glacier Edge Council email regarding Camp Indian Trails sale: Camp Indian Trails is council’s largest asset and valued between $750,000 to $1.2 million. The sale would contribute at least $580,000 to Victims' Fund (by August?) and pay off a $400,000 line of credit. "It has been a Scout Camp since the 1940's and has served hundreds of Scouts since it began. It continues today as a prime Cub Scout Summer Camp and hosts many other Cub Scout events throughout the year as well as serving Scouts BSA Troops for unit campouts. " The $580,000 amount "was determined by the national organization based on the number of victims in the area, available assets and when the abuse occurred, among other factors". TCC attorneys found at least 95 claims against the Glacier’s Edge Council. Council "does not have that much cash on hand and funds in its endowment are restricted; selling the council headquarters on Manufacturers Drive would not raise enough funds, and the council would need to rent office space." https://madison.com/wsj/news/local/crime-and-courts/madison-boy-scouts-to-sell-camp-indian-trails-to-cover-sexual-abuse-settlement/article_43d399b7-c06f-5049-8875-07246ce13eba.html
  15. Camp Indian Trails JANESVILLE, Wis. (WMTV) - Camp Indian Trails will be sold to help pay for the settlement reached as the result of the organization filing bankruptcy. In a statement to NBC15 News, the Glacier’s Edge Council stated it would sell Camp Indian Trails, “to ensure we are best positioned to continue serving youth, families and communities for years to come.” According to its website, the facility has served as a scout camp for more than 70 years. https://www.nbc15.com/2021/03/19/boy-scouts-to-sell-camp-indian-trails/
  16. Hmm that is interesting, I received no notification. I guess you can't notify yourself.
  17. To notify someone, say me RememberSchiff, of the post you are typing. You don't just quickly type @RememberSchiff in the post. Slowly type @ then R and watch a non-scrollable dropdown box appear with some entries As you type more "correct" letters, the dropdown box gets closer to the desired name. Move mouse cursor to RememberSchiff in dropdown and click. The dropdown box disappears , leaving the notification which is activated when you Save post. @RememberSchiff
  18. On Wed, got my Pfizer 1st shot by luck. Only 10% of shots at this site were allocated for 1st timers, albeit OLD timers. Thurs I was dog tired, spent most of day asleep. Have more energy today, hope my mind returns soon.
  19. Thank you both for schooling me on "estimation trial".
  20. The "estimation trial" seems a formality as both sides have completed professional, third-party appraisals of National HA and local council properties. Split difference and you have estimate.
  21. Some IMHOs: 1. We cannot say we will run out of money in August and then ask for an extension past that date. 2. We (and survivors) do not want the litigation spreading to our councils whether they still exist or are absorbed into National this summer. 3. The excuses given regarding the incomplete Mar 1, "Revised Plan" would not sway my high school literature teacher. 4. Following her thought "bring a toothbrush", I hope the judge sequesters the "relevant" parties into a room to amend the incomplete, problematic Mar 1, "Revised Plan" into a complete, acceptable "Compromise Plan" by May 1. There will be no extensions. If a "Compromise Plan" is not accepted, the alternatives for the Debtor are to exit bankruptcy or liquidate. By "relevant parties", some parties are not or worse publicly disagree with the judge stated outcome that the BSA should continue its mission. They can brush at home. My $0.02,
  22. 3/17/2021: "Under a pact approved Wednesday in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Del., lawsuits can be filed against the local councils that hold the bulk of the Boy Scouts wealth, but the litigation won’t progress until mid-July. The trade off is that survivors’ lawyers will receive detailed roster data needed to identify local councils and other organizations that chartered individual troops where the sexual abuse took place." https://www.wsj.com/articles/local-boy-scouts-councils-agree-to-cooperate-on-abuse-victims-probe-11616017053
