  1. I tried to post 4 times, succeeded once. Had a Memorial Day message and photo to post and the error I received was something about an "Empty Response". I see recent posts but can't get to them, no matter if I use filter, topic, and user profile. Running Win 7 Pro and Firefox 21.0 and this is the only online forum that I have posting and search problems.

Well let us see if this posts.

  2. The Mormon Church announced support for the membership policy change allowing gay scouts but not gay adult leaders.

    http://www.lds.org/church/news/church-issues-statement-on-boy-scouts-of-america?cid=%20HP000057&lang=eng

“The current BSA proposal constructively addresses a number of important issues that have been part of the ongoing dialogue, including consistent standards for all BSA partners, recognition that Scouting exists to serve and benefit youth rather than Scout leaders, a single standard of moral purity for youth in the program, and a renewed emphasis for Scouts to honor their duty to God."

  3. This wouldn't even change the situation for youth all that much; if a youth member has any inclination to continue in scouting as an adult, he'll still have to be in the closet as a boy scout.

Agree. At least if this resolution is approved, the gay scout could receive his earned Eagle rank, but then at age 18 his involvement in scouting would be over. So accept gays as scouts but don't retain them as adult leaders. ????
  4. Been a member here since 2002, but I have to admit defeat. Sorry. An occasional check-in from Terry would be appropriate, I would think.

    Scoutldr/Papadaddy

I had to dig to find Papadaddy's post. There is was as the most recent post in this topic, so selected the topic and it was not listed. Selected your profile Papadaddy, saw this post, selected GO TO POST and same thing. Finally went to this topic and FIltered with Today and found it! What a hassle. In the past 6 weeks or so since the software upgrade, there have been new topics that I would have liked to have posted and discussed but I am not "authorized". Please fix this great scout forum!
  5. Our precamp meeting the CD asked for us to keep our eye open and let him know about the ammo situation...He asked for 80,000 rounds of 22.
Depends on the number of scouts taking Rifle Shooting MB and a free shooting period. Rifle Shooting Option A requires a minimum of 40 rounds for a scout who is a marksman at the start. 80+ rounds is more common.
  6. I want Scouting to reach more kids, all kids that want to join. We need access to where they are, the public schools.

There are workarounds for the Pledge of Allegiance, swearing into office, taking the stand in court, joining the armed forces...and likely the Scout Oath and Law too.

    Another $0.02

  7. I still cannot create a new topic "Nationwide ammunition shortage may effect summer camp".

Even 22 ammunition is hard to find, a local Rifle Shooting MB class has been indefinitely postponed until 22 ammo become available.

"There is a shortage at the moment of .22 ammunition,†said David Chapman, Executive Director of the Buffalo Trail Council (Texas). “Kids like shooting and especially when it’s in a safe environment. During the summer we usually use about 22,000 rounds of ammo."

Chapman says each year major ammo retailers open bulk orders at a discount just for scout councils across the country, but this year it was a let down.

"They opened up the window for about two hours, “ Chapman said. “Then said, we’ve got all the orders we can handle through the end of the year.â€Â

Don't know how the Summit is set for ammo, as I recall they plan to shoot a variety of calibers (I guess GSS doesn't apply to them but that's another topic).

Bummer big time, shooting is the big draw for camp.

  9. Sequester Could Affect Boy Scouts

"The National Guard is set to provide the security when West Virginia hosts its first National Boy Scout Jamboree this summer, but mandated federal spending cuts could affect safety there, according to the office of (West Virginia) Rep. David B. McKinley... due to the sequester of federal spending, the Department of Defense will be cutting back on the use of the National Guard in all states."

    ...

"McKinley, an Eagle Scout, is a strong supporter of scouting. During the last session of Congress, he was one of 19 Eagle Scouts in the 435-member House of Representatives."

Here is the full list of questions sent to scout leaders and parents from http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2013/03/11/boy-scouts-of-america-distributes-survey-on-gay-ban/

    1. The current Boy Scouts of America requirements, stated above, prohibit open homosexuals from being Scouts or adult Scout leaders. To what extent do you support or oppose this requirement? (Scale: Strongly support, Somewhat support, Neutral, Somewhat oppose, Strongly oppose).

Following are some possible scenarios that could happen if the Boy Scouts keeps or changes its policy. Please tell us the degree to which you believe the actions taken in each scenario are acceptable or unacceptable. (Scale: Totally acceptable, Somewhat acceptable, Neutral, Somewhat unacceptable, Totally unacceptable)

    ROTATE QUESTIONS 3-8

    2. Tom started in the program as a Tiger Cub, and finished every requirement for the Eagle Scout Award at 16 years of age. At his board of review Tom reveals that he is gay. Is it acceptable or unacceptable for the review board to deny his Eagle Scout award based on that admission?

    3. Bob is 15 years old, and the only openly gay Scout in a Boy Scout troop. Is it acceptable or unacceptable for the troop leader to allow Bob to tent with a heterosexual boy on an overnight camping trip?

    4. Johnny, a first grade boy, has joined Tiger Cubs with his friends. Johnny’s friends and their parents unanimously nominate Johnny’s mom, who is known by them to be lesbian, to be the den leader. Johnny’s pack is chartered to a church where the doctrine of that faith does not teach that homosexuality is wrong. Is it acceptable or unacceptable for his mother to serve as a den leader for his Cub Scout den?

    5. David, a Boy Scout, believes that homosexuality is wrong. His troop is chartered to a church where the doctrine of that faith also teaches that homosexuality is wrong. Steve, an openly gay youth, applies to be a member in the troop and is denied membership. Is it acceptable or unacceptable for this troop to deny Steve membership in their troop?

    6. A gay male troop leader, along with another adult leader, is taking a group of boys on a camping trip following the youth protection guidelines of two-deep leadership. Is it acceptable or unacceptable for the gay adult leader to take adolescent boys on an overnight camping trip?

    7. A troop is chartered by an organization that does not believe homosexuality is wrong and allows gays to be ministers. The youth minister traditionally serves as the Scoutmaster for the troop. The congregation hires a youth minister who is gay. Is it acceptable or unacceptable for this youth minister to serve as the Scoutmaster?

    8. After reading the scenarios in the previous question, please answer one question again. The current Boy Scouts of America requirements prohibit open homosexuals from being Scouts or adult Scout leaders. To what extent do you support or oppose this requirement? (Scale: Strongly support, Somewhat support, Neutral, Somewhat oppose, Strongly oppose).

    9. Different organizations that charter Boy Scout troops have different positions on the morality of homosexuality. Do you support or oppose allowing charter organizations to follow their own beliefs when selecting Boy Scout members and adult leaders, if that means there will be different standards from one organization to the next. (Scale: Strongly support, Somewhat support, Neutral, Somewhat oppose, Strongly oppose).

    10. What is your greatest concern if the policy remains in place and openly gay youth and adults are prohibited from joining Scouting? (Open end)

    11. What is your greatest concern if the policy is changed to allow charter organizations to make their own decisions to admit openly gay Scouts and leaders? (Open end)

    12. Do you believe the current policy prohibiting open homosexuals from being scouts or adult scout leaders is a core value of Scouting found in the Scout Oath and Law? (Yes or No)

    13. If the Boy Scouts of America makes a decision on this policy that disagrees with your own view, will you continue to participate in the Boy Scouts, or will you leave the organization? (I believe I can find a way to continue, I do not believe I can find a way to continue, I have not yet made up my mind)

  11. Some local councils are doing membership policy surveys, a few others are now hosting education sessions about Boy Scout membership standards. Some sessions are open, some by invitation only.

Will volunteer feedback affect their respective council vote in May?

  12. Girl Scouts Fight Utah Tax Break for Boy Scouts Only! (sorry I still cannot create new topic posts so appending here)

Utah State House Rep. Steve Eliason, R-Sandy, sponsor of the tax break measure and a scoutmaster in Boy Scouts, vowed to try to revive it later by amending his bill to also benefit the Girl Scouts and possibly other youth groups.

Eliason already passed his bill through the House, but said in debate there only that any youth group meeting criteria in his bill would split money donated to a new "Youth Development Organization" fund. Taxpayers could check a box on forms to donate any amount they wish to it.

But the bill would only give to youth groups that have at least 180,000 members in the state -- which happens to be how many Boy Scouts are in traditional units in Utah, according to information Scout councils provided to The Tribune in 2011. Girl Scouts membership is about 6,000.

Boy Scouts are the largest youth group in the state by far, with most Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' congregations sponsoring units.

After the earlier House vote, Eliason acknowledged that his bill was designed so that the fund would benefit only the Boy Scouts -- and news stories about that appeared..."

But the Girl Scouts showed up Tuesday to fight the bill as it appeared before the Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee. Tuesday also happened to be "Girl Scout Day" at the Legislature, when young Girl Scouts distributed boxes of cookies to lawmakers.

  13. Game Design Merit Badge

"DALLAS, March 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Games are an important element in every culture around the globe. Simple games give structure to children's playtime and help enforce basic social skills like courtesy, sharing, and taking turns, and more intricate games can help children hone their logic, strategy, and even mathematics skills. Through Game Design, its newest merit badge, the Boy Scouts of America is opening the door for Scouts to put their creativity to the test. BSA representatives will introduce the new title at the SXSW Gaming Expo in Austin, Texasâ€â€a three-day event that provides gamers and game designers alike an opportunity to interact and learn from one another."

  14. Unable to find the Jambo thread about entertainment, anyway, I read today that the rock group Train decided NOT perform at Jambo due to "scout policy barring openly gay people from joining".

Plan B: Scouts lead and sing John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt. Thriftiness saves on entertainment expenses. :)

My $0.02 saved (wonder how much we were paying both entertainers?)

  15. Can we just do a Dallas with Bobby-in-the-shower and the last month was just a bad dream?

I tried to create a new post about the Annual Report to Nation 2013 and still got the error that I was not authorized to post?

Has anyone seen the Annual Report to the Nation that was delivered to Washington last week? Only saw one news article (small wonder with sequestration).

    http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2013/03/03/boy-scouts-of-america-present-annual-report-to-the-nation/

Wonder if this will work with creating a new topic? (Nope failed)

  16. Okay...for some reason, I can't see the "latest posts". For example, this thread claims that Moosetracker made a post earlier today. So, I come to this thread and the most recent post I can see is "#90" by Papadaddy from back on 2/25. So why can't I see the one Moosetracker did today (3/2)? And I'm sure there are others in between I can't see.

Software specs if that helps: I use Windows XP and browse with the latest version of Firefox (v19.0).

I have the same problem. My workaround is select Filter then select either

    o Today

    o Last Week

If I move to another topic, I repeat the above.
