  1. I guess my 12 guage Mossberg pump action that I retrofitted with an adjustable stock and pistol grip is now MUCH more dangerous than it was. I'll have to handle it much more carefully, lest I "assault" someone inadvertently. The liberal morons never cease to amaze me.

  2. Good point. If a Scout "earns" $500 from a fundraiser which is deposited in an account for his use, that's "taxable income" any way you look at it. A Scout is Trustworthy. Now if the funds raised were deposited into the Troop general account (which is actually the CO's account), and a single check written to pay for the troop's summer camp expenses (for example), that might be defensible. But it shouldn't be "earmarked" for specific scouts. That being said, I am just a Scouter with opinions who has done his own tax returns for 35 years...not a lawyer or accountant.

  3. It has been discussed here before that the use of "scout accounts" is probably illegal and puts the CO's tax-exempt status at risk. Fundraising in the name of a non-profit and then converting the funds to personal use? I agree with the Unit Budget plan approach. Put all the funds in one pot and everyone benefits equally. And CERTAINLY no "deficit spending"...sheesh. If participation is an issue, then that's a separate program problem.

  4. Mouse spasm, SP? Well, were I still a unit CC, I would inform my UC Nag that there are no such registered positions in a unit such as "Membership Chair" or "Advancement Chair"...they are all "MC" or members of the committee. How I choose to divvy up the duties is an unit internal issue (or not). It's not the job of the DE, DC or UC to micromanage the internal management of units.

  5. I'm not "pro-gun", but I am "pro-liberty". I don't see any problem with background checks. All transactions could go through a FFL dealer for validation that the recipient is not a felon. The issue of mental illness is another conundrum. While the background check form asks if you have been "adjudicated" as mentally ill, probably 99% of the nutcases out there have not been "adjudicated". It's kinda like the question on my security clearance application "do you use illegal drugs?" Well, no, of course not...does anyone answer "yes" to these questions? We do need to close the gun show loophole, somehow. I have recently read that there is an Amendment in the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) that prohibits using the healthcare system to gather information on gun ownership. That was a bribe to keep the NRA out of the debate on healthcare. Tax on ammo? Hmmmm...maybe for private purchase. How about if I want to go to the range and blow off 500 rounds, it's tax-free if I buy it from them (and turn back in what I don't use?). Just a thought. I don't think we want to dissuade gun owners from getting as much practice as they can by making the ammo prohibitively expensive.

  6. I think the rule is you never wear two of the same knot. He would wear one knot, signifying a religious award, with the device signifying at what level the award(s) were earned. I think it would be acceptable to wear two of the same device, if two awards were earned at that level. But in my experience, very few people ever wear devices after they get lost in the wash.

  7. Congress? We don't need no stinking Congress!

"Vice President Biden suggested Wednesday that the White House could take unilateral action on gun control, as he kicked off a round of meetings aimed at finding ways to curb gun violence.

The vice president met Wednesday with gun-safety and victims groups, saying he is "determined" to take "urgent action" to address gun violence.

"This is not an exercise in photo opportunities or just getting to ask you all what your opinions are. We are vitally interested in what you have to say," Biden said.

The White House has sought to avoid prejudging what Biden's recommendations would be. But the vice president hinted Wednesday that executive action -- action by the president in which Congress would not have a say -- would indeed be involved.

"Executive action ... can be taken," Biden said, adding "we haven't decided what that is yet."

  8. Say what you will about the late Jerry Falwell, but he had the only true "solution" that I ever heard. He had a standing offer to any pregnant girl...come to Liberty University and we will take care of you and your baby and give you a free college education with room and board...just don't have an abortion. Don't know if the offer still stands, but he was the only one I heard of who "put his money where his convictions" were. Does any other church have similar programs, other than to declare it a sin and move on? I don't see any orphanages around any more...

  9. At the last gun show, I bought a Mossberg Maverick 88 "tactical" pump action 12 guage with an 18 inch barrel for under $300. It's not fancy, but it will put lead downrange. For another $50 I added an adjustable stock with a pistol grip, officially making it a dreaded "assault weapon", but necessary to fit my short arms. I've been told it is the most practical for home defense...barrel is short enough to maneuver indoors, and won't send lead flying two blocks over into your neighbor's bedroom.(This message has been edited by papadaddy)

  10. I didn't realize firearms were ranked by "dangerousness"...maybe by caliber...given a choice, I'd rather be shot by a .22 than a .44 Magnum, but any firearm can kill. Are we also going to go after BB guns, Airsoft guns and paintball guns that "look" dangerous? Instead of this pansy-a**ed piecemeal approach, let's just ban and confiscate everything (which is what they want anyway) and get this Revolution underway. We're way overdue.

  11. Reminds me of a true story from a Camporee in the mid-80's. We were serving up spaghetti for lunch and a group of Webelos came through the line ... being handed a bowl, one of them pronounced, "I don't eat spaghetti without parmesan cheese". The person serving just said, "Fine" and dumped the bowl back in the pot and said "Next!"

The look on the kid's face was priceless.

  12. My wife works in an elementary school, and I know most of the staff. Asking them to pack heat is a scary thought indeed. I am not in favor of arming teachers and staff. It needs to be trained LEO only. I think the money needs to be spent to fortify the entrances...once the buses unload, the doors are locked down and no one gets in unless they are expected. And if a parent comes to get their child, they wait in the office with no access to the rest of the school. That will prevent parents and grandparents from eating lunch with their child, which is a common occurrence.

  13. In my state, when you apply for license plates, you have to check a box certifying that you are carrying the minimum prescribed limits for liability insurance. Otherwise you have to pay an "uninsured motorist fee" (which is not insurance). Guess how many choose to pay the additional fee voluntarily? The three times I have been involved in an accident, the other driver was uninsured and MY insurance had to cover the damage. POint being, putting extra questions on the firearms background check form is meaningless...the average citizen will lie to get what they want.
