  1. I was thinking of putting a sign on my door for the trick-or-treaters that read, "Due to the Government Shut-Down this house has no candy," but I think this will work better.
KDD, you should be able to keep what you have earned. I'll take care of me and my family, you take care of yours, and we can each decide how much charity to give and to whom.
  2. When congress "passes" the most sweeping social welfare program in a generation by parliamentary maneuver and with NO bipartisan support, it should be no surprise that the peoples' house would lead a revolt.
Obama was re-elected because the low-information Democrat party base thought they were getting "free" healthcare at the expense of the "rich". Those who are reasonable alert (like the Union bosses) are now realizing they were sold a bill of goods and have demanded exemptions, which Barry gladly granted. But when the "people" via their elected representatives demand the same consideration, or at least a delay, we are shut down saying "it's the law of the land, get over it."
  3. Just read this:

    AFN Back On The Air!

The American Forces Network (AFN) is working to restore full television service to the overseas audience within the next 24 hours.

As a result of civilian workers being allowed to return to work at the AFN Broadcast Center in California, plans are underway to launch AFN|sports, AFN|family, AFN|xtra and AFN|movie today (Monday, October 07). The programs required for AFN|sports are mostly live and, as a result, are immediately available; the inventory for AFN|movie and AFN|family exists on servers at the AFN BC and is also easily obtainable now that the workforce has returned.

The remaining channels, AFN|spectrum and the two AFN|prime channels (Pacific and Atlantic), will require a bit more time to restart since the programs have to be recorded from Stateside feeds and prepared for rebroadcast in the appropriate time slots. Service of these channels should be up and running by prime time Tuesday (Japan Korea Time and Central European Time).

AFN|news has remained on the air since the furlough began on October 02.

So the cold war and the communists where never ever able to shut off AFN, even way behind the iron curtin. Only Congress was competent enough to do it ...

Most DOD civilians were recalled to work as of last Monday. But we're not being paid, and the Senate leaders refuse to bring the House bill to a vote which would restore back pay. Meanwhile, my paycheck this week for a 2 week pay period was 24% of normal, and that's the last money we will get until an agreement is reached.
  4. The only square knots authorized for uniform wear are listed in the Insignia Guide and are produced by the BSA. The BSA Lifeguard has an insignia authorized for wear on the swim trunks. I find it odd that your Camp Director would authorize you to wear it, but is very stringent about what can go on the right pocket. As camp staff whom young Scouts look up to, your uniforms should be exemplary and regulation.

  5. There are some extremists who WANT the US to fall into financial ruin. It's their sick way of proving that they are right for hording guns, buying up gold, building underground bunkers and stocking up on 20-year supply of high-energy biscuits. There were a lot of preppers and tea party folk who were very upset that the end of the world didn't come in 2009-11 so they see this as their last shot at it. If the apocalypse never happens, they look like a bunch of fools and who wants to look like a fool. It's like those cults who predict the end of the world and when it doesn't happen they kill themselves.
But at least we can spell "hoarding"...if you think the apocalypse hasn't started, you're not paying attention. Just keep on voting for "hope and change"...I can guarantee you are going to see changes.
  6. FYI on the jokes about essential vs non-essential, my company operates that way. I have had to lay off people who weren't essential - I could keep the doors open for less, I just could not grow. Once the economy recovered, we added those people back who were necessary for long-term growth.

As for the government, the Office of Management and Budget defines essential vs. non-essential this way:

1.) Provide for the national security, including the conduct of foreign relations essential to the national security or the safety of life and property.

2.) Provide for benefit payments and the performance of contract obligations under no-year or multi-year or other funds remaining available for those purposes.

3.) Conduct essential activities to the extent that they protect life and property, including:

Medical care of inpatients and emergency outpatient care.

Activities essential to ensure continued public health and safety, including safe use of food and drugs and safe use of hazardous materials.

The continuance of air traffic control and other transportation safety functions and the protection of transport property.

Border and coastal protection and surveillance.

Protection of Federal lands, buildings, waterways, equipment and other property owned by the United States.

Care of prisoners and other persons in the custody of the United States.

    Law enforcement and criminal investigations.

    Emergency and disaster assistance.

Activities essential to the preservation of the essential elements of the money and banking system of the United States, including borrowing and tax collection activities of the Treasury.

Activities that ensure production of power and maintenance of the power distribution system.

Activities necessary to maintain protection of research property.

My job fits the definition of "health and safety" and "safe use of hazardous materials." I was not exempt. But apparently, the National Park service rangers guarding the WWII memorial from invading hordes of veterans in wheelchairs were considered "essential".
  7. Maybe if the other side of the aisle (which I still register with) would have made a proposal to help cover the uninsured, and helped small businesses with huge costs, and noticed the people going bankrupt due to health care costs, and broken the AMA monopoly on new physician training centers, etc. we wouldn't have ended up here. Or, perhaps, they could have gone with the Heritage Foundation / American Enterprise proposal that Governor Mitt Romney established in Massachusetts. Ignoring the root problem is not helping things.
Could it be that those without insurance chose not to be covered? That's most of my heartburn with the ACA...being forced under penalty of law to purchase a commercial product. I find it ironic that the Government forces people to buy insurance with one hand and with the other continues to hand out support to tobacco farmers.
  8. Hope things work out for you Papadaddy.. You hear things that make you hope a quick settlement is close at hand, then you hear stuff that say no one is ready to give in.. Either republicans have to give it up with nothing.. Or the Democrats need to throw them a small bone so they can save face.

The most promise I saw was this one video that was with two Republicans ready to refund government and back down.. So, they are not the ones in the lead.. But they were asked if they would deal on the funding of the Government AND not pulling this again on the Deficit if the Democrats offered them a trade in the Medical Device tax (from what I read there is already some agreement on that change).. Those two wanted a way out.. They were just looking for some bone thrown so they could save face (or perhaps it was more that the more radical elements of their party could save face.) and get out of the whole mess..

Again, don't know if it would not out the 30-40 house reps & Ted Cruise that are the only ones calling the shots.. And it meant the Dems had to take pity and throw the bone.. Dems I know wouldn't do it just for a 6 week fund the government.. But they might if they could also disarm the threat of Reps trying to take the Deficit fight as a new hostage.. That might be large enough to let them deal something..

But who knows.. It sounded like a great idea, but none of the people talking was a lead person who could start the wheel rolling.

All I can say is really, really stupid.. Never should of happened, and I hope for you and lots of others in your position, this is short lived.

Thanks for the well wishes, Moose. This morning the House voted unanimously to pay us anyway, and shortly thereafter DOD employees were ordered back to work Monday. I guess the Administration figures if they can't cause us pain, they aren't going to give us any more free days off. I will have a long memory, however, come Election Day.
  9. Sad how this makes the US Goverment look outside the states, on the news in other countries.

Super Power Shutdown - maybe not the best thing.

All because of a handfull of extremist nutbags it seems.

But the german news picked up on the fact that one of the screwballs responsible was also one to open a memorial in front of cameras - schizo much?

Berliner, Grusse! It's because of "extremist nutbags" that our country gained independence from British tyranny in 1781. And a lot of us are willing to do it again, if necessary.
  10. Heard one of my state's Representatives on the radio this morning saying that he often goes to the Jefferson Memorial at night to do his reading. He says they have 3 staff people at most on site. They had 7 guards turning people away. Figure that one out. It's Obama's punitive political theatre. It's like a little kid with a scratch flailing on the floor and wailing that his arm is cut off.
The barricades around the WWII memorial are now chained and locked, so they can't be pushed aside by veterans in wheelchairs. The cemetery at Normandy, France has also been barricaded...that land was deeded to the US by France after the war. I've never seen such childishness and mean-spirited behavior.
  11. The Bill of Rights hasn't been changed, but some in the current Administration seem to think they are empowered to ignore it.
Huckabee is a news pundit, not an elected official who took an oath to uphold and enforce the laws of the land fairly and equally, and not grant special dispensation to election supporters. I agree that the extreme right-wing religious zealots are out of line. That's why I will be voting Libertarian in the upcoming Gubernatorial election in Virginia, rather than vote for a Clinton lackey from out of state. I agree with Voter ID laws. If they want to buy booze or cash a welfare check, they don't seem to mind showing ID. ID should be provided free for anyone wanting one, and maybe ACORN could assist people in getting one. I agree that women should have access to birth control. I don't think it's a function of government to force me to pay for it. And I have come to believe that abortion is wrong, except in cases rape, incest, or where the mother's health is in danger, but it's a medical decision that the government should not be involved in.
  12. I work for the Department of the Navy and was sent home without pay. I can afford to miss a few days of salary, but we are supposed to close on a new home at the end of the month. Getting a little nervous now.

  13. In my experience, unless the SM has some concrete reasons why this lad is not "ready", other than age, the parents can appeal to the Council Advancement Committee and bypass the SM with a District level EBOR. Council will always err on the side of the scout. I've seen some 13 year olds who were more "qualified" than some 18 year olds whose EBOR I've sat on. And I agree with the sentiment, that, if there ARE concrete reasons, then why did they advance him to Star and Life?

  14. If she is using unauthorized photos of minors, report it to FB. There are strict rules for using names and images of scouts in social media. The answer to your question is that no, a Pack's charter cannot be moved unless the CO agrees to it...and the DE would have to process that paperwork. No individual "owns" the unit.

  15. Don't lose sight of the fact that the religious emblems are NOT BSA awards. They are a program of the churches and should be presented in the church. The BSA has merely authorized the wearing of them on the uniform. When I was unit scouting, we never spend "Scout time" working on religion, per se. I believe it's a matter for the family and scout to deal with within their own church.
