  1. I did notice that the requirement lists only two phyla (mostly Chordata) and makes no mention of arthropods or other creatures. I wonder why? Are they not to be included as part of the wild animals? Or was the suggested list non-exclusive? Any thoughts?
  2. ScoutingAgain, true enough. Ideally, we're here to try to find solutions to problems rather than to create them. But as you mention, that naturally tends to focus us on the hardest (and therefore least common) problems.
  3. I wonder what was the law he violated? I actually have a CWP for Pennsylvania and the ease with which I acquired it led me to believe that PA was friendlier than that for firearms. Maybe it had something to do with his previous convictions (convicted felons possessing firearms?) But for that kind of money, I'm tempted to quit my day job! Probably meet a better class of people too!
  4. Welcome to the forums! I started as a den 'mother' and then became cubmaster for years. And I have to tell you...I just loved the cubs. I like them far better than the older boys. You're possibly going to have more fun working with the little guys than you have ever had before - so live it up and try to capture every memory of every smile, every laugh. It'll be over way too soon. Edited part: Oops, forgot about the question. My answer was....Become the Cubmaster! It's only one hour per month.(This message has been edited by packsaddle)
  5. John-in-KC, if you admittedly do not understand a scout's religious thoughts, how do you reinforce them?
  6. Please also remember that the ONLY thing you get in these forums is 'opinion'. There is nothing authoritative about the responses of ANY of the respondents with regard to BSA policy - only our accounts of our experiences which may be a helpful guide to YOUR OWN decisions.
  7. I think the list is fine. It isn't necessary. If it is used as a tool to make the exercise smoother, perhaps easier, then no problem. But if that sheet of paper is required, then I object. (This message has been edited by packsaddle)
  8. Yes, I am in complete agreement with LisaBob and I add that a 'review' is not necessarily an 'examination'. The questions, if constructed thoughtfully, can yield thoughtful and constructive discussions. This is, to me, the essence of a good review. When the scoutmaster signs after the scoutmaster conference, he is certifying that the boy has passed all the REQUIREMENTS and that the boy is ready for his review. The review, in this sense, is also a review of the scoutmaster and the program, as well as the boy's experience and progress. Edited part: I should add that I share Beavah's feelings regarding the 14-year-old boy who was the subject of this thread.(This message has been edited by packsaddle)
  9. Welcome to the forums! You're always welcome at the campfire, just don't let it consume you...keep a sense of humor. Nice to have you with us.
  10. John-in-KC, Heh, heh, as much as I enjoy your sense of humor, I have to tell you that while Bob may seem to occupy an extreme position from time-to-time, maybe even a different universe (or maybe an alternate reality), Bob DOES have good knowledge of the rules and I happen to agree with him on some issues. And every time I say this, Bob feels a disturbance in the force as he reaches for his gom jabar.
  11. Wow, well I tend to agree. But that word, 'designated', is the part I'm not sure about. But you know, I'm just a stickler for the rules...I had to mention it.
  12. Yeah, I agree with Beavah and the others. A good program will provide plenty of days and nights. This unit does around 30 or so nights per year, not counting the 'special' outings where only a few go. However, if a patrol decides to go on a camping trip, does that count? I'm not sure it is a 'designated' scouting activity, or am I looking at this the wrong way?
  13. Heh, heh, I have a slightly different version, it ends: When the dog bites When the bee stings When I'm feeling sad I simply remember my mother-in-law And then I don't feel so bad
  14. OGE, save your excuses for the IRS or maybe the overdue desk at the library. You don't need to explain anything, I (perhaps we) understand, and as far as I'm concerned it isn't even worth one 'Hail Mary'. But the original thread was kind interesting. It was almost exactly like a bunch of boys sitting around the campfire, talking. One asks a thoughtful question...there's a bunch of opinions thrown around...some discussion...and then their ADHD minds spin off into unpredictable directions and first thing you know they're having a wacky song contest. What could be more endearing than that?
  15. "Arrh, I get SO tired of sexist claptrap - keelhaul 'im and get it over with!" Yep, that's pretty much the way my wife feels too. Better make sure the two of you never meet....at least my mother-in-law likes me, sigh.
  16. As I often say to my wife and occasionally to a moderator, "Whatever you say, Dear."
  17. I agree with Trevorum. I'd be disinclined to acquiesce...it means 'NO'. If they want to ask about 'reverence', that is OK. 'Reverence' is an abstract concept that anyone can discuss. 'God' is a different matter and means so many different things to so many people so as to make the question idiotic. It's almost as if the board would consider itself some kind of authority on the subject of 'God', capable of passing judgement on a boy. They are not. Such personal aspects of life are improper at a BOR. It is a review, not an inquisition.
  18. Put-im-in-bed with the Captain's daughter, Put-im-in-bed with the Captain's daughter, Put-im-in-bed with the Captain's daughter, Early in the morning. OGE, why close it? No one is getting angry at anyone. There's no harm. And MacyM has gotten a lot more than she probably thought she would, most everyone already gave their input, a long way back, and now we're just having fun, most of us anyway. Edited part: in my best impersonation of Gunther Toody, Ooo! Ooo! OGE just referred to this thread (in the spun thread) in terms of 'darkness'. "...the darkest hours are just before dawn..."(This message has been edited by packsaddle)
  19. Ed, I'd make that Tanqueray and tonic but it doesn't work well with the lyrics. But then...you were thinking about someone else weren't you? You pesky (mythical creature).
  20. Welcome to the forums exnavy_76. Class of '59, wow, that puts you ahead of me by a few years. But welcome back to scouting.
  21. Leaders can advise and assist but this leader expects the scout to take ownership of the responsibilities and leadership for the project. I help the scouts understand who the various people are who need to sign the workbook. I make myself available for questions if they are unclear about something or if they don't know how to do something. And if my signature is needed, I sign. But the boy must write the project description and the design, the plan, etc. I offer pointers on how to make it look nicer in some cases, or how to fit it in to the space alloted, things like that. But the 'intellectual capital' to use a term I apply in my work, should belong to the boy. I take a more active role while filling out the application for rank, making sure his information matches that of the council, and making sure he has not forgotten anything. But once he has attained Life, I am there to assist at his request and to make sure he has the opportunity to succeed - or fail - on his own.
  22. OGE, maybe if you'd hum a few lines....
  23. Explained, thanks.(This message has been edited by packsaddle)
  24. You know, Ed asked a good question, "Bob, What exactly do you mean by 'and the fact is that religion is not an element of a board of review.?'" I'm curious to know the answer as well. Actually glad to know this fact. It will be a big help in each future BOR in this unit.
  25. really strange double post, drat! how did THAT happen! Oh what the (mythical place)! As long as I'm here, I think there are plenty of atheists whose political ideas are a long way from anarchy. That pentagram thing is interesting. Isn't that like, you know, the non-Jewish star or Star of Bethlehem or something? I know I've seen it in church many times. Isn't it supposed to represent the five knightly virtues, or the five wounds of Christ, or something like that? Maybe they were looking at it upside down, in which case they confused it as a symbol of that other mythical figure.(This message has been edited by packsaddle)
