  1. BW, I'll be there the last week of July with 4 other District Training Chairman. Well, off for a weekend of camping. Overtrained
  2. BW, Thanks for the suggestion. The 3 nearest districts (all within 20 minute drive from mine) have our calendar coordinated so within any 4 months, we offer a basic training. Training the Pack Committee the way we do Troop Committee Challenge, at their unit home makes a lot of sense. Just couldn't see the forest through the trees. The rest of your suggestions have merit and are similiar to my end goal. It is taking time to change old patterns, and thus my drive for new trainers. But it will come. Only two challenges I see: 1. My own bias of always having two tr
  3. BW Good topic. I wonder where the idea came from? :-) 1. The fact that some council and district trainers by either individual choice or committee direction alter the training syllabi contents. I am curious as to what information you add or delete and why. The only one we adapt is the Cub Scout Leader Basic, as discussed in another thread. We only alter where some things are presented, not the content. The only other difference Ive ever done was having a backup flannel board and flipcharts for when tv/vcr werent available or werent working. Of course the power point sli
  4. Hi Pam, Although insurance is differant state by state, the basic premise is the titled owner of the vehicle needs to insure it. Since by your charter, the troop and its eguipment belong to your charter partner for Scouting purposes, they are the best source to get it insured. We just did this with my troop. It opened up the doors of communication to better understand our relationship with the chartered partner. We pay the little extra it cost to add it to their insurance. The liability would extend from the vehicle that is towing the trailer. The comprehensive and collision co
  5. Bob White, I'm always open to ways to better train our scouters. I have 5 dedicated staff of Cub Scout Trainers. My goal is to have 5 more by July from of prospect list of 25. What's your idea? Ovetrained
  6. Hello "4 the boys", Its been awhile since I dealt with Roundtable planning. I agree with all of the above, but would add one item - Roundtable Program Planning guide. I believe they have a seperate one for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturing. Start with the basics, keep it fun and go from there. Good Luck
  7. I see I started a healthy debate. I hope I haven't misrepresented how my council and district operate. First of all, New Leader Essentials we run as a stand alone for all leaders - Cub, Scout, Varsity and Venturing. Although it can be done for a specific group, the benefits aren't the same. SM/SA Leader Specific is done over 3 nights or one Saturday Session. Venturing and Varsity are done on a Saturday, seperately. Troop Committee Challenge is done by unit, with two sessions a year in a large group for those that missed their unit prsentation. The topic at hand, Cub Sc
  8. I have been in 4 councils in 26 years and they all had "Fireside Chats" in each district at Roundtables once a year. The intent is to have unit level leaders and council leaders (ie board members and executives)get together to discuss Scouting in their council. As commander in the military I was always taught to talk to soldiers two levels down to see what filtered down to them from my level and to hear what never filtered up to mine. It makes good sense then, it does in my business today and it does in Scouting too. As to why its listed under finance, I quess someone had to do it.
  9. I remembered something in the US Flag Code about it being on clothes. I just read the code and it says nothing about its direction, so I presume it would be up to the authorized organization to decide. Being former military, I understand their version. Here is what the code says about wearing the flag on a uniform: (j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a
  10. First of all, I'm glad the boys are showing respect to the flag by saluting it and saying the pledge. If it doesn't represent our flag, why wear it? The "Insignia Control Guide" calls it the "U.S. Flag emblem". I just looked at my uniform shirt on my military uniform that had it and the Scout uniform, taking into account the border was sewn after the flag, I can still make out all the stripes and stars. I'm glad your Scouts were ingenious enough to think of it when a staffed flag wasn't available.
  11. Advanceon- I've been doing similiar by having the first 3 parts (with the video) as one group, we then break down into the 5 seperate areas for the last hour to discuss "Leader Specific" stuff. This still takes 2 1/2 hours or so, but means I need up to 5 trainers for the breakouts. My district scouters are pretty good at pre-registering ( I had 20 with 1 walk in last time) so I know what positions are there and can recruit appropriate trainers. Shemgren - When you say you skip the Webelos part, are you talking about WOLF (Webelos Outdoor Leader Fundamentals)? I do New Leader Essentials
  12. In looking over the Cub Scout Leader Specific traning syllabus - it asks a training team to run a seperate 2.5 hour session for the 5 areas. Is anyone doing it this way? If you aren't, how are you adapting it?
  13. I'm a former professional scouter (9 years) and currently I'm a Independant Insurance Agent.
  14. I'm sorry your son had to experiance that. I doubt those adults are trained, as they should know better. There are 4 phases to advancement: 1. A Scout Learns 2. A Scout is Tested. 3. A Scout is Reviewed and 4. A Scout is recognized. The board of review is NOT A RETEST either. And NO, a badge cannot be revoked. To question them about past merit badges should only be done to foster interest i.e. Are there any badges that you have done that still hold your interest today? Would you like to help some of your value Scouts to earn that badge? You get the jest. Ask those adults i
  15. I haven't heard of any new video, just the web training. I was a camp director and Camp School Staff over 8 years and I thought they had a seperate manual for camp staff that you got at Camp Director's training at Camp School. It was different from the general training. That was 7 years ago though. Might be worth checking though.
  16. Congratulations on being asked. Its an honor whether you take the job or not. The best troops I know have a committee dealing with the admin and the SM and assistants doing the program with the boys running it. If the committee can support you and allow you to concentrate on training the Scouts to run their program - you'll have a winner! Good Luck.
  17. Councils can add to the national requirements. Indianhead council has set a two year requirement for Youth Protection Training. National High Adventure basis require your training to be within a year. If your council has no rule, then it is good for life. By the way, it is also available now on most council web sites to take the training via the web. A nice addition.
