    Advice

We have a leader that has been great at making donations. This person doesn't what people to know and doesn't want any recognition. We really want to do something nice in return. Obviously this person has $, so gift cards don't seem appropriate. Any ideas?
  2. We tried a show and sell booth at our small town fest. It was awful. I think we only sold 4 boxes of butter and 4 tins of carmel corn in 2 days. We did sell 4 popping corn buckets, but that was to ourselves. We popped it and sold bags for $.25. That part went over really well. I think in small towns most people know someone in scouts and want to purchase from them. We have a couple fill it ups already, but not a good take on the entire pack.
  3. I know it's not 100% cotton, but you might try washing it in hot water and dry on high heat. If it's anything like my luck, when you want them to shrink they won't and vise versa.
  4. For our Bear requirement to make trail mix for a hike, we used the following. pretzels raisins chex peanuts (make sure no allergies) mini m&ms sunflower seeds cheese-its
  5. We also have a leader that works for a company that matches volunteer hours. Each year this person fills out the necessary paperwork and we have to submit our nonprofit tax info (which is our COs info). A $200 check is wrote to the CO. The CO then writes a check to the Pack.
  6. The results are in.... The popped popcorn went over really well at our town fest. We may raise the prize to $.50 next year, instead of $.25, but we did cover the $10 per bucket cost. I haven't counted how many bags we went through yet, but we did go through 5 buckets of the popping corn. We cut some drink boxes and sent a couple boys up to where the comedian was going to be. I couldn't pop it fast enough to keep up with them. Unfortunately our show and sell was pitiful.
  7. I'd like to add another scenario... Cub Scout graduation banquet If you don't charge for the meal, but put out a donation jar, is that a violation too. You aren't asking the general public and they are receiving food whether or not they put anything in the jar.
  8. ScoutNut, Thank you for the bead jar idea. I'm happy to report it went over great. I had a small glass jar. The group was starting to get loud and weren't getting back to their seats. The jar was picked up and shook. One parent said beads are going to come out and they all quieted down and got in their seats. I think it also made a strong impression on Please and Thank You too. I asked the DL if she heard any Thank You's as snacks were passed out. The whole group said Thank You right away. I told them they only got one bead because they had to be reminded. If they had each said Thank
  9. Do they do pullups in PE class at school?
  10. Just curious if there is a meaning for the 3 different colors on the "Webelos Colors" pin? Do certain pins go on certain colors?
  11. At our last Pinewood Derby we had a concession stand. Not really to make that much $, but to cover the cost of food instead of supplying snacks. We sold a hot dog combo for $2.00. If you buy hot dogs in bulk, go to the bread store, get the small bags of chips on sale and get soft drinks on sale you still make a little profit. It was a big hit. #1 - $2.00 for a big hot dog, chips and drink was cheap #2 - parents didn't have to cook
  12. Den Leader had games, Assistant DL had crafts and Den Chief had the snack station. So the rotation depended on the group. 3 groups - 1 at each station
  13. The problem areas are the ones where they work at different speed. Little Johnny may not care about the craft and just throws it together, while little Billy wants more time to make his perfect. We have 3 stations, set up before the meeting starts. 2 adult leaders and a den chief. We will typically set up 1 as craft, 1 as snack and the other will be games, songs, etc.
  14. I've had mixed opinions on this subject and would like more feedback. We have a large den. We are breaking them into stations of smaller groups. We are considering giving each boy 3 carabineers. Misbehave and you lose a carabineer. If you lose all 3 carabineers you don't get a treat at the end of the meeting. The treat will be something cheap like a sucker. They have a similiar set up in school. We don't want scouts to be like school, but anything to encouraging good behavior is a plus. One opinion is they'll expect something all the time for being good or it will be like school an
  15. We had our roundup and were excited to have 20 new boys sign up. The Bear DL called everyone about the 1st meeting. We had one parent say little Johnny just signed up to get the free pinewood derby kit. I was really surprised they would go so far as to fill out all the paperwork and pay the $10 just to get the kit. Guess they didn't know anyone can buy them at the scout shop. Getting them to join is one thing... keeping them is an entire different thing
  16. We have a scout that earned the God and Me (United Church of Christ) award as a 2nd grader. He is now a 3rd grader and the God and Me program is being offered as either generic Protestant or United Methodist Church. Is the program exactly the same and can it be earned again?
  17. I took your advice. They said the 2.5 lb. popping corn bucket should produce 200 cups of popcorn.
  18. Sorry I missed the corresponding Troop part. Is the Troop number any where close to the Pack number? Can they save a little money by just replacing 1 number? How does the cost run for the single patch with all 3 numbers... 3 times as much as the individual numbers?
  19. I have to disagree, but that's probably because we have never had 1 patch for all 3 numbers. As a parent I would hate to buy the tan shirt and put all the patches on for 1 year then have to remove the red numbers and put the green ones on. Also I really like our cross over ceremony. As the Webelos cross the bridge their blue tabs were changed to red (now green) and they switched their necherchief. Kind of hard to switch their patches quickly.
  20. We are getting a complete kit free from our council and there is suppose to be Trails End small bags included. We'll start with those and try to get more that size.
  21. We are going to sell the microwave butter popcorn, carmel corn tins and the popping corn at a booth at our local town fest. We are also going to pop the popping corn and sell bags. At a quarter a bag, do you think we would get 40 bags out of one bucket of popping corn? That would cover the $10 cost per bucket.
  22. Our DE said there has been back and forth and confusion on the Cub Scout blue uniform. Latest I heard is blue uniforms will keep the red and white numbers and Webelos that buy the tan shirts will get the tan and green numbers.
  23. The DC has been asking the CM why he wasn't included in cub activities like the example I gave. The CC assigned which den he will be den chief to, but I'm not sure DL knows yet. Over the summer he was at a couple pack events but wasn't assigned a den. Hopefully when den meetings start and he is given specific responsibilities things will go better.
  24. There was some politics involved and the SM wasn't hip on this scout, but was trumped. He started last year about half way through. At the time he had a younger brother as a Webelo. CM has told him numerous times he is a BS and not a CS. If he is given a job, he does ok. Problem is CM feels he has 1 more boy to deal with instead of help from a DC. He's with a different den this year. Hopefully the DL will put him to work and he will mature.
