    next rank

Thanks! I went to Scouting.org but obviously didn't search in the right spot.

    next rank

I thought there was a discussion on here about when you can start working on the next rank, but I couldn't find it. I need documentation that you can't blow through the Wolf requirements and start working on Bear requirements. I thought June is the first time you can start on the next rank, but maybe that was an assumption since around here school is out in May.
  3. We set additional incentive for popcorn sales. On top of the popcorn prizes and the council's prizes we offer to pay half their dues for filling one sheet and completely pay their dues if they fill 2 sheets.
  4. I use the bead jar method at each meeting. A bead goes in the jar for each scout attending, one for wearing uniform, one for book etc. Peer pressure to fill the jar will help the scout want to come in uniform and have his book. If the scout pressures the parent, then maybe you don't have to approach the parents your self.
  5. My son usually gets Adult M shirts, so they are not tight. He currently has an XL cub shirt that fits. I would think the XXL would be fine.
  6. I picked up half a dozen of the World Crest rings. Someone else noticed the stitching. 2010 looks like 1010 on one of them. 1 of a kind or cheap quality from China?
  7. I use Quickbooks and a binder. In Quickbooks you can put each entry in and easily balance it when you get your statement. Also you can print a report easily. Nice checks and balances. My binder has tab dividers with each month. Each month will have the banks statement, a copy of the treasure report and all the receipts for that month.
  8. Everyone that attends gets their name in a drawing for prizes. Prizes are drawn at the end of the meeting. We hit the parents pocket by offering to pay 1/2 their dues if they fill up 1 sheet. The pack pays all their dues if they fill up 2.
  9. What's your take on the 100 year patch with streamers? Some of the requirements are definitely going to be double dipped. *Earn one Cub Scout Academics belt loop and one Cub Scout Sports belt loop. *Complete one achievement or activity badge for your rank.
  10. Neat idea! We've already completed Readyman. The fire station covered everything in one day for us. I was surprised by how much they already knew. They've learned a lot of first aid at school.
  11. Great idea on the patrol! I planned to have them vote for it but didn't think about turning it into an election. For some of the other requirements I thought about turning it into a competition. Group them and see who can answer the most. (President, Vice etc.)
  12. How did you make it fun?

    knot work

Dollar store had 100 ft. of cotton clothes line for $3. I haven't compared it to other rope but it sounded like a good deal.

    knot work

Is clothes line a good or bad choice?

    knot work

What kind of rope is cheap but works good for learning knot tying? If white is cheaper I figured I could dye 1/2 blue and the other half red to make it easier to demonstrate/follow along. How long should the pieces be?

    Craftsman

I was surprised to see cubs making the marshmellow shooter was on the news this morning. They gave www.instructables.com as a resource for plans and other crafts. Love the ideas!
  17. A lot of parents tend to be harder on their own kids and feel their behavior reflects how good of a parent they are. That doesn't make it right to call a kid stupid, even if it is his own son. Unless you've seen similar behavior with other kids, it's a big can of worms to open.
  18. Lightning was seen all morning, so we resorted to Plan B. We took them to see G-Force. Small turn out, but better safe than sorry.
  19. Typically there would be a reschedule date. Problem is we need a July event to qualify for the national summertime award. There is an indoor fun place, but with rain in the forcast it will be packed plus we will have food we won't be able to grill there. We could fork out the $ for a shelter house, but what if no one shows or if we're stuck in there for several hours... not much fun.
  20. Do you typically have a backup plan for outdoor Pack events? We're pretty worried about this weekend. Right now there's a 40% chance of thunderstorms during the hours we plan to take them to a water park. Since they have picnic areas we didn't want to fork over $80 to $150 for a shelter house. Now we're worried about lightning and being able to grill. Would you wait it out and see what the weather will do, start coming up with an indoor event or other?
  21. We just have one account, but do reward popcorn sales by reducing dues. If they fill up one sheet 1/2 their dues are paid by the pack. If they fill up two sheets their dues are completely paid by the pack.

Thanks for ideas. I've looked at several neat looking kits, but was afraid of the cost for 10 scouts.

    Webelos hat

Since the hat is optional we told our group if they prefer the tan Webelos hat (comes with tshirt) it was ok. We haven't had a problem with them purchasing the neckerchief, but none of the scouts in our group like the plaid hat. I understand the significance of the 4 colors, but they could have created a different design than plaid. Guess that's the designer in me...

What projects have you worked on to complete all the requirements for Craftsman?

    Webelos hat

Just got an email that the Webelos hat is 50% off. Are they coming out with a new design?
