  1. In my early years as a scout I learned to respect the rights of others even their sexual choice, but just as important I realized respect must be demanded of others. If someone dose not like the boy scouts stand on any issue they are free to join another group, say camp fire. They do not have the right to make the scouts accept their views.
  2. After you know the brands you like and what size fits; you can get some super deals at rei-outlet and northern mountain supply (usually 50% off). This year I found some North Face W & B jackets for $11 at Marshalls (also had some North Face Boots) these were orginally $80. Our unit now all have the same jacket.
  3. Our troop has tried many fundraisers all but a few have worked fine. Over the last 10 years we have done an annual garage sale making a low of $450 to a high of $3500. A local supermarket would provide the fixings for a pancake breakfast; we would make about $1800 (this chain is now closed). One of the best has been See's Candy, if your troop has the innitial order of $500 per year. Our troop sells between $3000-$5000 per year (50% profit). Most of the scouts and many of the parents are happy to help so we have never had any scout accounts. We use the extra money of troop camperships for any s
  4. My scout handbook ('59 edition) ended with a little phrase "once a scout, always a scout". I had forgotten how much I had learned from scouting. About 10 years ago my son wanted to become a cub scout, he joined a pack and he loved it. The first night he went to sleep in his uniform. Today he is an Eagle Scout and active in his Venture Crew and working on his Ranger Award. It was a long road but it sure feals good to be back where I started. Welcome home from another scout! - I wear my green, red and blue stars with pride.
  5. In the old days adults would wear a neckerchief with the short sheeve shirt and a green tie (I think this is still official uniform wear) with the long sleeve shirt.
  6. Our council is having a powerhorn course in March. I may be able to find out a for sure answer that week during the training.
  7. I have never seen an appeal for anything other than Eagle Scout. This process is spelled out on the Eagle application. The decission is made by National with the input of the local Council.
  8. My son is also ADD and Dyslexic and after 8 years in scouting he is now and Eagle Scout with a silver and a gold palm. He has hiked hundreds of miles been to 5 scout camps went to JLTC (at the time he said it was the worst week of his life), and served on JLTC staff for 2 years; He even made the cover of Boys' Life bacause he filled out an info form on the National website. He has become a good backpacker and a real leader. He still enjoys scouting and is curently active in his Venture Crew. As for myself, the ground is sure a lot harder here on the West Coast than it was on the East Coas
  9. If you can't get help from your local council go to another council, if still no help try your regional rep. or go direct to National.
  10. Our Venture Crew started their own website, two 16 year old scouts did everything; the adults only review it. www.crew765.com
  11. Try your local scout shop or order dirrect from national. If you have time, take some pictures to a local quick-print shop and make a poster and have his scouts sign it. We did this for our last scoutmaster. He liked to take a nap whenever he would reach the mountain-top, we used 5 pictures with enough white space for remarks.
  12. Many scouts usually finish their leadership requirement and their project before they finish all the merit badges needed for Eagle Scout, this scout has been to most meeting and outings for a 6 month period, now he decides to take it easy sometimes for 2 months or even 2 years. Should the Scoutmaster sign this scouts Eagle application or should he require him to do some additional activities with the troop for the scout spirt requirement?
  13. If this scout has compleated 6 months of leadership since he was a life scout, he has finished that requirement for Eagle Scout. Scout spirt refers how he lives the Scout Oath and Law. You can not either add to or change the requirements. You can only take away his JAS.
  14. Some scouting groups in the World Org. of Scouting now except gays but they have paid a heavy price for this decission. These countries now have several much smaller groups. If the BSA accepts gays into membership (then God will also go) progran will nosedive just like in Europe. Is scouting better for the youth of America the way it is or do we get a 'camp fire" program?
  15. Our troop (60 scouts) only has 4 boards of review and 3 courts of honor every year. The reason we do this is two-fold. The scouts themselves requested it and our backpacking and camping progran needs a lot of prep time at meetings.
  16. If the scout wants to become Eagle he needs to do his job. The Scoutmaster should meet with this scout and his parents and explaine what will be required of him to finish his Eagle Rank. (most troops save JAS for Eagle Scouts)
  17. The OA is not an official Venturing activity since they do not accept girls(14-18) as members. In addition if a male Venture Scout want's to become an Eagle Scout he must also be registered in a Boy Scout Troop.
  18. This subject comes up several times per year at our council and many advancement people and DE's are not sure of the rule. Now what I was able to find out after I called the National office and what I was told is being taught at the advavancement training at Philmont; a scout must have an additional 3 month tenure (gone are the leadership requirements) for each palm and he can receive a silver palm provided he has enough merit badges. For example a 17 year and 6 month old scout with 96 merit badges recently pased his board of review for Eagle Scout but he will only receive 2 silver palms. He
  19. Our crew is new, we meet 2x per month. We have 5 active Eagle Scouts the rest are Life most are age 16 except the girls who are 18 and in the National Guard. We hope to have everyone receive an outdoor Bronze Award by year end. They already have their own website for communications (password required for member access). www.crew746.com We have already outgrown our original meeting room and we just ordered our crew flag. By the time it arrives we should have doubled our size.
  20. The date on the Eagle Scout Certificate is the date of the Board of Review. Many Eagle Courts can happen 3 months after this date. The council person should check to verify the 3 month time that is required between each palm (National dose not review palm applications).
  21. An Eagle Scout must wait the 3 months before his first palm (it can be a silver palm if he has a total of 36 merit badges) He can continue to receive palms every 3 months until his 18th birthday.
  22. Most Eagle Scout review boards would like to see a completed project of 100 hours with the leadership skills to direct the effort. However there are exceptions, the project can be a bust provided the basic requirements are complete. Ask your district advancement chair. - if he has no suggestions seek out your councli advancement chair. Depending on the age of the scout and the time invested a scout can pass with a failed project. It is much better to do a smaller project ( you can receive a 6 month extention from national in some cases).
  23. In our troop, about 60 scouts with 6 active patrols, we have an Advancement Chair., a Hikemaster, and an Eagle Scout Advisor, in addition to the 6 Patrol Advisors. The troop comm. active jobs are Troop Chair., Treas., and Newsletter Chair. Our troop has a good record, our 50th year with 122 Eagle Scouts and good retention after the 1st year.
  24. Our troop has added our location below the council patch, this also saves money when it is included with the troop numbers.
  25. Again congratulations, the youth of America need more scouting. The best way is to find the boys who like the idea of being a scout and ask the parent. If they were scouts in their youth, remind them of a little saying found in their handbook; "once a scout always a scout". With over 100 million scouts there is a good chance that some of the parents have been in the program and if the program worked they should be willing to help. Another idea is to plan campouts with an established troop. Many troops have a sister troop, they take turns planning trips.
