  1. Thank you jblake47. I had no idea that it covered that many books or was that large. I just went on Ebay and the Ben Hur book is being sold. The current bid for it was $400.oo.

When did the Boy Scouts stop adding to the Library? It seems like a great idea.

    Thanks again.

  2. I have a copy of "The Cruise of the Dazzler" by Jack London.

In the front of the book is a letter from James E West, with a date of July 31, 1913,(showing the letterhead of the National Headquarters of the Boy Scouts of America) telling the readers about the Every Boy's Library. On the cover of the book is the Boy Scout's logo.

Each year James West's letter states that 25 books approved by the Boy Scouts will be published with the approval of the Boy Scouts.

Do any of you know more about this series?

  3. I'm getting this message when trying to start a new topic in Scouting History. Help!

  4. I agree with everyone who said the DE should be working for the Scouts and the program.

My question about the DE was more of a technical question about who he/she works for in the job as a job.

Eamonn and Eagle92 - thanks for your help. I will pass it on.

    Thanks again.

  5. Baden and AvidSM - I guess I had it wrong in my mind for the seven years I was District Commissioner.

I worked for the District Chairman and the units not the Council Commissioner. The District Chairman put me into the position and I was voted in by the District Committee.

I attended the Council Commissioner meeting but did not work for him or the Council. I worked with my Commissioners and unit leaders and the District Committee members.

    Did I do it wrong?

  6. I have enjoyed reading everyone's views. So here goes my two cents.

We forget that we have two different things or thoughts going on at the same time.

    1. We have the people like me who work with the boys in a unit (Pack, Troop, or Crew). That is where the real Scouting program is.

2.. We have the people who make their living out of Scouting. It's their job. They are part of a business which needs to grow and attract more clients. So they will do anything to get more people interested in joining. Remember the the bottom line! It's the only thing!

  7. I was at college packing to go home for Thanksgiving and heard that he had been shot. Just sat down and did nothing but listen to the radio until they came on and said that he had died.

I had not voted for him but he was my President and the leader of my country.

All in my family spend the Thanksgiving holidays that year watching TV. It was not the best Thanksgiving for the United States.

May all of you have a great Thanksgiving this year. Drive safe.

  8. BrianScout - How is the training in a different District or even in another Council in your area? I like training in your own area but what you know and learn is going to affect your Scouts. If its not good it maybe time to move on. Or do you have the time to take on training also?

  9. Well if have read everything and now know something about Philmont and urban legends (good and bad).

I have been to Philmont, have a red jacket and a black bull. Also got my boots branded.

Seems like this has gone to the bull now.

  10. JAYMEDINC - welcome to the campfire.

Hope you enjoyed the Scouting Sucess Seminar the last of September if that was where you took the three classes.

Don't forget that Roundtable (the second Thursday night in each month) will also give you much information.

Your District has a good website with lots of information on it.

Say hello for me when you see Alan K at the roundtable.
