  1. It's not a slippery slope.

Marriage isn't a civil right, it actually is a priviledge. You have to get a license to get married, that means permission. You have to right to worship as you wish, that's a right.

I'm not advocating polygamy, mearing using the positin of Devil's Advocate here to show that if one group (gays) want their position legalized, another group may want their position legitimized.

I'm tolerant of gays. Let them live together, do what they want, etc. Can't join BSA, Episcopals don't want them as priests, probably other groups don't either. Just quit ramming into our society.

The point here is that scholls should teach, not indoctrinate.

  2. Here' my situation. I served 10 years in the Navy, 6 in the Navy Reserve and 8 in the Army Reserve. I retired in June of this year. I love my country, I continue to be on a stand-by list if needed and continue to be will to die for my country, and my flag. I know many soldiers serving in downtown Bagdad today.

I told my wife when we got married that I had never been arrested. However, if I ever see someone dessecrate the flag, I would wind up in jail for beating the daylights out some SOB who did it.

    GWD,

Yes, we usually hold flag raising and lowering ceremonies.

I thanked the fellow had placed the parts into the fire. It turns out he is also a veteran. He told me that wcouts would keep watch over the fire all night, bury the ashes and retrieve the grommets to be presented to the person who originally owned the flag.

I appreciate your comments on the brevity of your ceremony, thanks.

    OGE,

I can't count the campfire programs I've been too, participated in, etc. I'm not even trying to establish National policy. I'm asking questions. I simply believe that cubs are too young. Because I believe cubs are too young, doesn't mean I said that all cubs are too young. Some Boy Scouts may be too you too. Big difference between an 11 year old Tenderfoot and 17 year old Eagle, right?

  3. interesting comments,

Packsaddle, I knew we could agree on some things.

At the grade school level, teachers teach all subjects. Inhigh school, the History major should stick to teaching history, not math, unless maybe that person has a minor in math or relevant work experience or there is a shortage and is teaching math temporarily. The history major will likely know more about history than the average parent, but maybe not all parents. By the way, teachers should leave out "hisotry revisionism", you know, changing the 'perspective' to suit today's "poolically corect" agenda.

    DanKroh,

I have indeed made the comment on another thread, becasue it's true. I'm tolerant of gay people, I don't think the SCHOOL SYSTEM should be teaching that homosexualtiy is OK, it isn't. When put on the ballot for the people to vote on, gay marriage FAILS. Inother owords, the majority of people think it's wrong too. I really believe that gays are intolerant. They are trying to force us to accept them. It kind of goes back to comments I made about gays in scouting. In BSA, it's not allowed. In society, gays can't get married. They want to domestic partner benefits, they want health insurance, acceptance, etc. It's not allowed by law be gay and be married to a gay person.

By the way, I opposed to changing state and federal constitutins to allow it. Pass (and enforce) laws that are constitutional.

Since you think some of my comments are nonsensical, let's try this. The following is hypothetical and for this thread only: If gays want to redefine the gender in marriage, I think we should redefine the quantity in marriage. Instead of one wife, how about 3 or 4? You see, we can't always have want we want. No I really don't want 3 or 4, Mrs. Gonzo wouldn't like that.

Here's the bottom line: parents should be involved in the kids education. Ask the teacher and principal about the cirriculum. Heather has two mommies, daddy's roomate, etc. have no place in the classroom. It has nothing to do with educationg our children, only indoctrinating them. Let;s not waste our kids time on that nonsense. How about more chemistry, math, real history.

My kids prinicpal got an earful when the school didn't mention 9/11 or last year didn't mention Dec 7th.

  4. Last year, my son did over $2,200 in popcorn sales by himself., 3 others in his pack sold over $1,000. Sure, people may buy from a cub or webelos scout before an older kid, because they're "cute", but selling is selling.

If a unit is being threatened because they don't sell popcorn, sell some popcorn. Gather the unit for a day ong blitz in town and BAM, you've sold some popcorn. Maybe your unit won't sell the ost, but you sold some. Then, when your application to sell something else comes along, council will have no excuse.

  5. Welcome,

I echo the comments about not allowing cots, shoes, food, standing in tents etc. Have scouts and adults pack their gear to be waterproof, you know, put things in Zip lock bags, waterproof the pack itself and leave the pack leaning against a tree. Put a heavy duty plastic bag over it and it too is water proof.

    I think Eureka makes the best tent. I've been using a Tetragon 7, (7ft x 7ft) a 3 man by design, but 2 fit. Fiberlgass poles have lasted well for 10 years, no tears, zippers work and still costs under $100. W A T E R P R O O F ! ! ! !

    It 's also lightweight.

  6. FB,

I don't regard opposing views with disdain or being without merit. I regard some of the views here with humor and utter disbelief. When the American public listens CD's and rock music (no rock music isn't the root of all evil), they aren't getting informed except what they get from left leaning newspapers, cnn.com, Saturday Night Live, Leno and Letterman.

Get your news all of you, from a variety of sources, left, right, center and then learn how to pick out the fly dropping from the the black pepper. In other words, get informed. Katie Couric, and the rest are not giving you all of the information.

There are more good things going on in Iraq and Afgainistan now than you would EVER believe, but you don't know about it. What is getting media air play is all the bad.

Here's and example: US Soldiers de-fuse a car bomb in Bagdad, Al-Jazeera is staked out in a near by hotel and doesn't pass on the video. Al-Jazeera has another crew a few blocks away by another car bomb, that one explodes and makes thenews. I wish our military could get the press releases of the next car bomb locations, don't you?

Of course it's THEIR religious war, they declared war on us. They attacked us. They have been attacking us for years, wake up!

It not WHAT I'm calling enemy lovers, it's WHO!!

Remember, we don't shoot from churches or mosques, hospitals, etc. Also, we didn't incinerate our POW's like the Germans did. Also remeber, Germany declared was on us after Japan attacked us.

Inflame them???? I couldn't give a rat's rear end if they get inflamed. Someone got his nose out of joint because we had bases in Saudi Arabia and Bin Laden thinks that gives him the right to attack us? If they want a holy war, I hope we give them Holy Hell. It's not up to us to judge them, but we can expedite the meeting with the Judge.

America is the greatest country on Earth. I have personally been to more than 20 different countries and I know that this is the best country on Earth.

    God Bless America.

  7. One of the best ways IMO is to lead by example. If you wear your uniform correctly, others will see a good example. You don't need military creases and starch, but have all the patches in the right places, correct size and fit.

When parents say to me that they won't buy the pants, that their kid can wear blue jeans instead, I ask the parent what sports the lad is involved with. Then they name ____ sport, let's say baseball. I suggest that next time junior goes to the baseball game, have him wear only the jersy. Then they say that the coach won't allow it. I ask them if it would be OK for the police to just wear his pants and shoes, but a polo shirt instead, they of course say no. Then I tell them that the uniform is the uniform. There are many low cost ways to obtain a uniform. The lad can even push a lawn mower and EARN IT.

Be sure to show the various cub uniforms.

There has been a metamorphosis over the years. Different materials, red piping at the front pocket flaps that buttoned into position. Different hats, beret, etc.

    Remember the Venture uniform

    Different insignia

The BSA Museum in Kentucky could possibly help too.

  8. Very well, you folks are saying your TROOPS are doing Flag Retirements. With all the years I've been in scouts, we had NEVER done them. Okay okay. I still say the cubs are way too young. At the Flag Retirement I recently attended, cubs were squirming, talking, walking around, generally not interested or mature enough to know what was going on. Part of the problem was the poor campfire program, aside from the retirement, there really wasn't a program, a few kids with jokes, 2 lame songs.

  9. Parents are the ULTIMATE authority for child rearing.

Parents have the right, duty and obligation to get that nonsense out of the schools.

These types of books prove once again that the love that once dared not to speak its name is now the love that won't shut up.

I submit that tolerance is indeed a virtue, but it seems that gays can't (and won't) be tolerant of heterosexualtiy.

Schools should stick to teaching math, art, science, reading, etc. not their BS.

  10. Fscouter,

In the spring of 1940, FDR moved the Pacific Fleet to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii as a deterrent to Japanes attack. Hawaii at the time was a territory of the US, much like Guam or American Samoa is today. Suddenly, and with provocation, we were attacked.

Hmm, while minding our business in Hawaii, a US territory, how did that draw us into war with Japan?

As I learned somehwere, for almost 20 years, the Japanese naval academy had asked its graduating students to present a plan to attack Pearl Harbor. It would seem that Japan wanted Pearl Harbor BEFORE we moved Pacific Fleet.

  11. Apparently Hastert points to Soros because Soros is funding the Democratic National Committee and democrat campaigns.

Speaker Hastert has announced publicly that anyone on his staff who withheld info from him will be fired. So, I guess the 3 fingers pointing back at himself are taking responsibilty for himself and his staff, eh?

  12. AAAHHHhhh, I miss Chicago "machine" politics. Who would have guessed that the BSA would stoop to such attempts, but hey, vote early, and vote often. And remember, in Chaicago, the dead have as much right to vote as the next guy. ;)

Maybe we could in fact take the 'out' out of scouting when referring to National, and use "Boy Sc s of America" instead.

  13. SR540Beaver,

You are right about timing, Sandy Berger took classified documents from the National Archives long after he was out of his Clinton Administration position.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander. In appropriate timing is bad for both sides, shame on all who engage in it.

I have heard (sorry, not read) some news about democrat financier George Soros having suppressed the Foley news until now. Shame on him and shame on any republican for doing the same.

Please don't assume that I'm totin' someones water bucket. Treat them all the same, Like Sen Harry Reid, (D) Nev. for making $1.1 million in a recent land deal.

  14. Sure, the media will pounce, but they will crucify the republican and barely touch the democrat.

I understand the "timing" of the information release is womehwat suspect also. That is, someone knew about this a few years ago and did nothing until now, a month before the election. Why would the reporter wait? To screw up the election.

  15. Also, remember a care pakage for him while he's gone. Some socks, t-shirts, drawers, cookies, magazines, a hometown newspaper, etc. Check with the wife for sizes. Only military issue t-shirts and drawers, the exposed part of the t-shirt must be the correct one.

  16. FB - No possible way to win a religious war? Maybe you're right, but when the people are free and have democracy, they will be free indeed and then WE ( USA and their civilian population) win. Fightin' ghosts? no, we're fighting animals who refuse to "play by the rules" Before all you enemy lovers say that we don't, keep reading. The USA plays by the rules of war and ethics of war. We don't hide in hosptials, museums, places of worship, we don't transport combatants or weapons in ambulances, we don't hide in cemeteries or schools AND THEN SHOOT AS AMERICAN FROM THOSE PLACES like they are doing.

    Gern,

    We've alienated our allies?

When I was in the desert ( I had a very short mission to Kuwait in 2003) I saw soldiers from many countries. Remember, the USA was attacked, not Great Britain or Spain. Even Poland and Australia sent troops. Hmm, come to think of it, France, Germany and Russia were opposed to our actions in Iraq because, let me think, wait a minute, Oh yeah, they were in Sadam's back pocket with $$$$ and weapons. Hmmm, I suppose they didn't want us to connect the dots. Well, they've been connected.

FScouter - you think we stick our nose where it doesn't belong? Japan attacked us, Germany declared war on us, South Korea asked for help, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait asked for help. So far as I can see, Afganistan Government (Mr. Karzai) is pleased we are there.

For the rest of you who think we'll be "out" of Iraq sometime soon, let me remind you that WW II ended in 1945 and we still have troops in Germany and Italy, Great Britain too I believe. Korea War 'ended' in 1953 and we have troops all over S. Korea. It never officially ended, they are still technically at war, since 1950!

I wonder what you people would be saying if the 9-11 attacks had happend in London and we were sending troops to fight THEIR war? It would have been somebody else's problem, right? You would be saying that we have no business fightin and dying for them. The terms of our NATO charter / agreement state that an attack on a member nation is an attack on all of them.
