Beaver, obviously both of those examples are the result of bad planning on the part of the involved Scouters. In the first situation, you should have had all of the Scouts' appendixes removed before the hike began. Possibly, you should have had all internal organs removed. In the second situation, your mistake was twofold. First you took Scouts with bones. Secondly, you went outside. Both situations could have been avoided if you had done virtual outings. Much like POWs would have virtual meals in which they'd eat their rations and describe what they'd really like to be eating. You could stay in a safe location (no stairs, padded walls and floor) and just talk about going outside and what you might see. This method also prevents dehydration, sunburn, bee stings and poison ivy.

We have faith everytime we get into an airplane because we believe that plane will fly. Sometimes the passengers are wrong and the plane falls from the sky. I've never seen a black hole and I'm only taking the word of a bunch of physicists that that they exist. Is that different from religion?

"If they go out to a Council property to do a high-ropes COPE course, they're using a youth-serving organizations property, but are not members. They get to pay the non-member rate." Well . . duh! I don't do Exploring but I doubt that Fire Explorers would need to do much at outside facilities and the annual visit to the COPE course isn't going to break the budget.

The troop first aid kit has tylenol, benedryl, immodium and that's about it. I carry everyday asprin, benedryl, psuedophed (sp?), and immodium along with a few band-aids. Since I carry a pouch with a meter and insulin, there's no problem carrying the other stuff. During our training hikes for Philmont, the first aid guru added a tube of frosting for me in case I needed it.

A big problem in BSA and probably many other youth organizatins is that tooo many people drop out when their kids leave. They were only there for their children and weren't really there for the other kids. The CC for my son's pack didn't even wait for the end of the 'year' to quit. The day her son crossed over into Boy Scouts was her last day as CC. How many Den Leaders and ASMs have we heard say, "I can't wait until my son's out so I can quit"? How MBCs quit as soon as their son leaves Scouting? You might argue that this is the DE's fault but it is all part of the "I got mine . . ." attitude that pervades our society. Of course, few if any, of the members of this forum fall into that group because if we did, we wouldn't be discussing, arguing, or ranting about the interpretations of the program. We do what we do because we care. We may not always agree but we all car about more than getting our son to Eagle and then freeing up time to watch hockey.

You must be a really, really sad and tormented person to spend your life doing your best to disrupt the lives of others and telling yourself that you are serving the greater good. Much like the traffic cop who sits on the side of the deserted highway in the middle of the night, waiting for the speeder doing 5 mph over the limit which there is a stranded motorist a half mile that could use his help. Sad, very sad.

Here in the East, we've taken Scouts to the hospital for quite a few things and just armed with our official Scout documents, the docs have medicated and sutured ill and injured Scouts without ever speaking with the parents. A permission slip is just that, permission. At least here in the east. The same goes at camp. "Johnny has a fever." Health lodge guy says, "Have two tylenol. Good night." As for the McDonald's thing, I can't count the number of times that I've wound up wearing a drink at a fast food joint because the presenter didn't bother to apply the lid correctly. It's gotten to the point where I don't even take the cup into the car before I check the lid.

Depending on the roads, you can get pretty far in an hour and a half or you might not make it 20 miles. Base it on time, not distance.

That's why our permission slip has a medical release section which asks for a list of known adverse reactions to OTC medications and says, "unless otherwise noted, I give permission for my son to be given Tylenol, immodium, benedryl, [and a few others]" A parent should know what can be given to his child. A Boy Scout aged child should know what he can and can't take.

"Bringing internal medications to distribute to someone else's child without formal medical training in the storage, administration and potential dangers of each drug is irresponsible and dangerous." Yep Bob, it is really difficult to read a prescription label or the parent's note and know that Johnny needs one pill with breakfast and one after dinner. I'm glad that you pointed that out to me. You remind me of the ASM in my son's troop who declared, "I'd rather that camp keep the meds because I don't know how to give medication out since my boys don't take any."

Gee, that's a tough one. The music needs to go with the slides. I saw a great one recently that used the Star Wars theme. I think that Also Sprach Zarathustra might be good. Theme from "Magnificent Seven." Magnum PI theme. Miami Vice theme.

Thank you for the correction on the title. I knew the history of both the Patricias and the song, I have a replica of the Rick-a-damn-doo around here someplace. As for singing it, if we shouldn't sing a modification of the Patricias' song, we shouldn't sing a goofy song about the Duke of York.

" The functions of unstaffed committees fall to the DE, and the purpose of a DE is NOT to do volunteer jobs." It's been my observation that the unstaffed position functions wind up being done by the Dist. Commish. and other overworked volunteers. That's not to say that I would want a DE's job. Not on a bet. Pay might not be too bad but there are too many hours involved.

Okay . . . you and I have different definitions of "high adventure."
