However that may change in the future. I've heard yet another rumor that Scoutign will be coed within the next 5 years. Another thread covers this rumor. We'll see.

NW, Unfortunately thatis going against national by laws. Anyone under the age of 21 who is up for election MUST have obtained First Class. So no females under 21 should be in the OA. Not my rules, but national's.

Congrats onthebirth of your daughter!

Correct info has been posted. Also the "grass is greener" saying is not always true. My district borders 2 councils, and I've heard of units that wish join oneof the two. BUT we have folks from those 2 councils using our camping faciltiies on a regular basis, heck one district used our camp for their camporoee!

Woodbadge and the 21st Century Woodbadge
Eagle92 replied to Tflytyer's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
First welcome to the virtual campfire, Second glad to have you back, and third, thank you for your service. Now in reference to WB21C, the course is radically different than WB, or so I'm told. I admit I've not done either courses at this time. I've been told that unless you staffed during the transitional period, the only way to serve on staff now is to start all over as a participant. Don't know who mad ethat policy, tbut that is what I'm told. -
Thanks everyone. I know about the temp insignia hangers, have one for my European Camp Staff Program patch, when i wear it for special occasions. And i am going to get an oval one for my son's CS family campout patch, as i discovered the hangin loops were not added to the order BUT since they under ordered estimated the total and getting a 2nd shipment, maybe these will have loops. Anyway, the comment just freaked me out.My though was, what's next a BS rank Patch holder with a spot for the AOL underneath. HMMMMM maybe I should copyright that while I can. Anyway i just finished sewin on my son's Bobcat and come to this realization: with CS joing 2 years earlier than I did back inthe day, the pocket's aren't big enough for a full diamond.(This message has been edited by eagle92)

What is the most dated scouting skill requirement?
Eagle92 replied to Frank17's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Ah yes, First Aid being required for First Class. That MB was what kept me from getting FC within a year of joining; I didn't go to summer camp as soon as I joined so took a year to take the course at sumemr camp. I was advised to use that MBC and know why as not only was he excellent, but he used real life teaching scenarios to teach that class. Every scenario he used was either A) something he encoutnered or B) something one of his freinds had encountered. I also concur with ADAM on havign FA MB being required for 1st Class. As mentioned elsewhere previously i had a few incidents as a youth where things happened, and folks knowing I was a scout expected me to knwo what to do. -
Ok I was visiting as local council shop, and asked about the plastic rank diamond for CS that I am seeing everywhere. I was told that national was doing away with sewing on CS rank patches, and is now encouraging the use of thse plastic diamonds. Now I know some folks work for supply around here, and others have ins with folks, so I'm asking IS THIS TRUE? Is national now encouraging folks to use the plastic instead of sewing. When I asked about electives, aka arrowpoints, i had a deer int he headlites look.

Yep blame it on the lawyers as it's considered "child abuse" to get tapped out nowadays. If memory serves, Tap Outs got banned around 1990 or shortly therafter. I know I got elected in 1988, and got Ordeal in 1989, and tap outs were still good. Unfortunately I didn't geT the KERPLUNK KERPLUNK KERPLUNK, as I was sick the weekend of the district camporee. Missed out and regret it.

Have you been through BALOO training yet? It's a day long training that #1 is required for at least one person in each pack to have in order to go camping, and #2 does give you lots of great ideas for campouts.

One reason why HS won't be affected by year round school, or so I've been told, is #1 HS athletics and #2 those industries, read tourism, that require manpower during the summer. Most atheltic regs state theat athletes must be in school at the time of play, with a few exceptions. have year round school, well only certain players will eb eligible at a certain time. Also some industries need the cheap labor of teenagers, I was one once ,You gotta have those lifeguards.

While the Insignia Guide found below has not been updated http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/Media/InsigniaGuide/10.aspx You'll note that the arrowhead award is shown on that section covering Non-unit Scouters, which commissioners are. So to parphase an old TV quote, " No Numbers for You!" LOL Also this site shows the 2008 Fall/Winter The Commissioner newsletter. page 7 is where the new guidelines, i.e. Arrowhead Honor is worn between the CSP and the Smokes pocket http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/14-975_08_FallWinter.pdf Hope it helps.

When is earliest that a Webelos can bridge ??
Eagle92 replied to WestCoastScouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Lisabob, Yep there was once upon a time that the"10.5" was the rule. It seems to some of us old fogeys that BSA keeps dropping the age down. First BS was 12, then it got dropped to 11, then 10.5 and finished 5th grade, now the current policy. -
Grace, Your son, and I stress YOUR SON, needs to contact his SM to get the list of approved MBCs. SMs are the ones responsible for giving out MBC information.

RD, The back of the pink page is blank now? Show's how long it's been since I dealt with the forms. Oh and the last post should read "I reread..." Long day at work.
-
HICO, just wait at the cost of the "alternative field uniform" that is being tested in MD. It's made by Under Armour, and it's more expensive than the current field uniform.
-
Yep way to many interruptions, lack of discipline, extraneous items coming about, mandatory testing, year round schools, All reasona for homeschooling. What I found sad was this. In the New Orleans Metro area #1) I was constantly asked 'Why you want to be a teacher, do something productive with your life?" And that was from teachers and #2 Folks would ratehr work in the parochial/private schools makign 1/3 less than their public school peers, because the better work environment made up for the lousy pay.
-
OGE, Actually the salary is for 9 months. It is called "annual" because that is what you are paid for the year. Work summer school and you got extra pay. Also employees had the option of having their full paid only while they are working, or having it spread out over a 12 onth period. So you could be paid say $3333.33/month for 9 months or $2500/ month for 12 months. that's based upon a "yearly" salary of $30,000 At least that was the way it was back in the day in my neck of the woods. And that $30K was just an example.

RD No problem. reread the post, and I sound grumpy. Sorry not my intent nor aimed at you. As I have learned keeping ALL advancement and recognition records is very important, especially since SCOUTNET is suppose to kleep track of your entire history, including youth advancement. Let's just say I've had problems with SCOUTNET. Any what as to what items go onto the advancement report, best suggestion I can tell you is to get a tripart form from the council shop, and look at the back of the last page. There should be a list of EVERYTHING that goes on that report. Now some recognitions require a separate form if memory serves. I believe the CS Outdoor award is one of them.
-
If a scout shop is sellign restricted items, then the person the SE, DFS, DE, or whomever approached you should be the scout shop manager and/or staff, not you. The link provided is the correct form and itdoes need to be filled out in triplicate: one you you, one for the council and one for the district. Most shops will have the forms available in carbonless triplicate, and the back of the last sheet lists 95% of the restricted items that need to be put on it. But if memory serves here is what goes on it. All Rank: Tiger , Wolf, 2nd Class, Apprentice etc. All Webelos Activity pins All MBs All Venturing recognitions: Silver, Quest, Ranger, etc. I belive all Electives need to go in it to, but don't quote me on it.

Lots of programs and companies would haev to shut down. ANY summer camps, whether BSA, YMCA ad nauseum would be affected. Also affected would be lots of out of school extracurriculars, i.e. soccer leagues, football leagues, etc. In the year round shcools in my area, family vactaions have been affected when children in different grades have different off periods. As for more time in class=better education argument, there are some arguments that do NOT support that argument. The key to education IMHO is discipline. Teachers need to be able to use it, and parents need to support it. Too much responsibility is caste upon teachers already, but they have no authority discipline kids in a meaningfull way. If you hold kids back logn enough they automatically get promoted; principals "punishing" kids with lollipops, etc. Biggest reason why I got out of the education field after teaching breifly.

Sctldr stole my thunder Must concur having older scouts teach the younger scouts is the best way to make sure they still maintain those skills. Must also concur with skills games at meetings and events at camporees. Just don't make it so realistic looking that people pass out and/or puke all over the place. Good friend of mine used his resources to get some Navy corpman to run the first aid competition at council camporee, and it was quite realistic.
-
DC, Not to change the subject, but one way for a scout to keep his T-2-1 skills sharp is for him to teach those skills to the younger scouts.
-
Thanks for the update, i wasn't able to get a chance to look at materials last nite. The past few days have been crazy at home.

Is this Eagle Canidate Worthy...Interrogation during EBOR?
Eagle92 replied to mmhardy's topic in Advancement Resources
SST, I don't think some people are proud of the BSA. It's a matter of scouting being pushed on them by parents. and that they' have to get eagle to get their license" or whatever goals the parents palce on them. I think that many beleive Eagle is the "BE ALL END ALL" of scouting. I had a cousin who was a great Scout, set the example, worked with us younger guys, etc, but never made it to Eagle. He had a blast though. Very good friend of mine made it as far as Life. I know he regrets not getting Eagle now, But as I told him to his face, he was one of the best Scouts around as he set the example, mentored thsoe in his patrol when he was PL, mentored the PLs when he was part of the Leadership Corps, and continued on briefly as an adult. I also think some folks don't understand the full concept of the uniform. The uniform does mean a lot. i don't have my 3rd Ed. SMHB inf ront of me, but if I get the chance tonite, I think I might quote GBB on his opinion of the uniform.
