s'morestashe
Hi, Does anyone have any ideas of projects that can be done to increase the numbers of a mammal? Thank you.
Stosh
I'm not trying to be stupid here, but I'm having trouble understanding the question but if one buys a male bunny and a female bunny and puts them in the same cage. Rumor has it that this will work quite nicely.
s'morestashe
Req # 5 Working with your counselor, select and carry out one project that will influence the numbers of one or more mammals.
s'morestashe
Honestly, most of the mammals we came across while searching were not ones I necessarily want more of (mice, rats, etc.). They were all over the camp we were at. Liked the deer though.
Stosh
Mammals are tough. What about bat houses? I have those around my property trying to increase their population around my house.

Influence the numbers, this could also be a decrease. Let your cat out at night.
Krampus
Buy a snake (reptile study MB) and feed it mice. Kills two birds (er, mice) with one stone. Knock off a requirement for Mammal Study and Reptile Study.

I remember one thing that we did at camp was stack brush piles (as opposed to the common practice of dragging them to a meadow and burning them) to give cover to ground mammals. Not sure how the Hawks felt about that.

s'morestashe
Thank you for the input. I will show these to my son. He will not have the option of the snake, however. A bat house sounds much better to me.
jr56
Have your son talk to the Merit Badge counselor he selects to work with to earn the badge. They should have a wealth of information.
SSScout
Salt licks for deer. (hunters would like that). Spread peanuts around yard, chipmunks like them.
