Favorite Song for Pack Meetings?

Recommended Posts

We have an Assistant Scoutmaster who starts singing "Announcements, announcements" whenever anyone says the word "announcements", but up until 5 seconds ago I never knew it was a "real" song or that it had any other lyrics.

On the comment above about some of the mothers being upset: I hate to be a wet blanket here, but some of these little ditties about eating roadkill and sharks eating peoples' heads are probably best left to Boy Scouts sitting around a campfire, and not for 7-year-old Johnny Cub Scout with Mom sitting there. Some people might have issues with them in Boy Scouts too, but I wouldn't be one of them. Now, some of the songs sung by Boy Scouts when I was a boy, especially when no adults were around, those would be a problem regardless of age. Even so, we do have to "veto" some of the older boys' more gruesome lyrics from time to time.

Pack meetings are times to be FUN, and for the Cubs to strut their stuff.

They are not times for the administrative business of the Pack.

Keep it fun, keep it moving along. Leave the calls for help, paid commercial messages, ad infinitum to Committee and parents newsletters.

Ghost Chickens in the sky sung to the tune of Ghost Riders in the Sky.

Lyrics:

A chicken farmer went walking out one dark and fateful day

He rested by the coop as he went on along his way

When all at once a rotten egg hit him in the eye

It was the sight he dreaded

Ghost chickens in the sky!

Bok bok bok BOK

Bok bok BOK

The ghost chickens in the sky

The farmer had raised chickens since he was 24

A-working for the Colonel for thirty years or more

Killing all those chickens and sending them to fry

Now they want revenge...

Ghost chickens in the sky.

Bok...

Their feet were black and shiny, their eyes were burning red

They had no meat or feathers, these chickens all were dead

They carried off the farmer and he died by the claw

They cooked him extra crispy

And ate him with cole slaw

Bok...

P.S. I learned pretty fast that if the song doesn't have some kind of guts or isn't loud or doesn't let the boys jump up and down, it is no fun in a pack meeting.

I dont know, NJCubScouter. Given what kids are exposed to today in the media songs like Road Kill Stew and Jaws seem almost quaint. Even some of the sanitized Kids Bop songs give me pause what with some of the mature emotions expressed in the songs.

The fact is that the boys love these songs so I wouldnt discount them entirely. My advice would be to run songs or skits youre unsure of by your Pack Committee and let them decide. Perhaps soliciting the opinions of a few parents as well would also be helpful.

I had put together a skit that I realized was a little over the top but I knew the boys would love. I ran the skit by a mom, grandmother, and my Committee Chair (a mom as well) who all agreed that the boys would enjoy it. I did the skit, the boys did love it, and I got all kudos and no complaints from the parents.

Gold Winger, "Panzerlied"???

(OK, I admit it - I sing along whenever the "Battle of the Bulge" is shown uncut, too).

Does your unit sing "Lili Marlene" at camp, just before lights out?

You haven't seen anything 'til you've seen 50 Cub Scouts all in ranks, stomping their right feet and bellowing "Ob's strmt oder schneit, ob die Sonne uns lacht!" Quite stirring!

Underneath the lamppost, by the barracks gate . . .

G'night.

Our ANNOUNCEMENTS WENT:

Announcements

Announcements;

When you're up, you're up (stand up)

When you're down, you're down (sit down)

And when you're only half way up you're neither up nor down (stand up then sit down).

Oh yes the kids love any little ditty-

Love on top of spaghetti(goes way back rememebr when I was a kid) and also Tom the toad (I made the mistake of putting all verses I could find in the camp book and kids made us sing them all !!)

We sing a version of the Grand Old Duke of Yorke...

The nobel Captain Kirk

He had 1000 men

He beamed them up to the Enterprise

and he beamed them down again

And when they're up they're up

and when they're down they're down

and when they're only half way up

they're nowhere to be found

This announcement song takes longer to sing than the announcement would have taken to say, but the pontificating producer of proliferating points of interest (announcements)will soon learn to keep them few and far between and to call them something other than ANNOUNCEMENTS!!!!!

Announcements, Announcements,

A terrible way to die, a terrible way to die

a terrible dead to be talked to death, a terrible way die,

we lost our cow, we lost our cow,

we have not need for your bull now.

Have you ever seen a windbag a windbag, a windbag,

Have you ever seen a windbag a windbag, a windbag,

well there's on right there, blows this way and that way, and this way and that way. Have you ever seen a windbag well there's one right there.

Keep your announcements short and sweet, short and sweet, short and sweet, there so boring.

Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream, throw your announcements overboard and listen to them scream.

We found our cow, we found our cow, we have the need for your bull now!

Speak freak.

Our pack always loved The Moose Song. Some people change the end (when the moose dies from drinking his juice in bed) but I never change it. In fact, I ramp up the sadness of it by howling and wailing until the kids can't breathe they are laughing so hard. It's always a favorite at pack meetings and at daycamp.

Little Green Frog

Um Ah, went the little green frog one day

Um Ah, went the little green frog

Um Ah, went the little green frog one day

and his eyes went Um Ah, Um Ah, Um Ah Ah Ah

Honk Honk, went the big Mac truck one day

Squish Squash, went the little green frog

His eyes don't go Um Ah, anymore

'Cause they got licked up by a dog, Woof Woof!

Finally, our all time favorite (ok ok ... my all time favorite) that the Pack loves to sing is ...

Second Story Window. I have added Barney on there eventhough it is not a nursery rhyme! The Barney verse is still the kids' favorite.

Second Story Window

(Chorus)

The window, the window

the second story window.

With a heave and ho

and a mighty throw,

we threw it out the window.....

Verses

Mary had a little lamb

its fleece was white as snow

and every where that Mary went (pause)

she threw it out the window.....

the window

the second story window.

With a heave and ho

and a mighty throw,

we threw it out the window......

(Action: both arms rocking back and forth in the throwing motion and finally the throw itself!)

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall

Humpty dumpty had a great fall

and all the kings horses

and all the kings men (pause)

threw him out the window...

the window

the second story window.

With a heave and ho

and a mighty throw,

we threw it out the window.

Jack and Jill went up the hill

to fetch a pale of water

Jack fell down and broke his crown (pause)

and Jill threw him out the window..

the window,

the second story window .

With a heave and ho

and a mighty throw,

we threw it out the window

Hey diddle, diddle

the cat and the fiddle

the cow jumped over the moon

the little dog laughed to see such fun (pause)

that he threw them out the window....

the window,

the second story window.

With a heave and ho

and a mighty throw,

we threw it out the window......

Hickory dickory dock

the mouse ran up

the clock,

the clock struck one, the mouse ran down (pause)

so we threw it out the window.....

the window

the second story window .

With a heave and ho

and a mighty throw,

we threw it out the window......

Barney is a dinosaur from our imagination.

When he's tall, he's what we call,

A dinosaur sensation.

Barney comes to play with us (pause)(pause)(pause)

and we threw him out the windows.

the window

the second story window .

With a heave and ho

and a mighty throw,

we threw him out the window......
