NM seems to be one of the few sane states. It makes no sense to have kids coming in to your state from other geographic regions. This thing isn't knocked back yet. The focus needs to be on getting them back in school in the fall.

Not really.  On May 28, ABC News tracked the 21 states that started opening up before May 4.  There was no major increase in deaths or infections.

Also, you can drive into NM and not have to do the 14 day quarantine.

  2. I saw the commercial today for the law firm compelling people to come forward to sue BSA. The commercial comes across just like all of the "Slip and Fall, Give Us a Call" law firms that advertise all the time.

People who were hurt as kids deserve compensation. I just wish the individuals responsible were the ones being punished. Not just the ones who committed the acts, but also those who participated in the coverup.

  3. We need to change. Even without the lawsuits and bankruptcy, we need to change. We're going the way of bowling alleys right now. I'm 50 and as a kid, I lived in a bowling alley.  It was tough getting a open lane at times.  People belonged to leagues. Since then, society changed and belonging to a league is not something people want to do.

We can't be nostalgic. We have to figure out how we can serve today's youth. Lots of people think they have the answers. I don't claim to know who has the right answers. I suspect adults younger than me with younger kids will know better than people 50 - 70.

  4. I'm not sure this is a good decision. As of today, we are moving from a now-closed Council camp to Summit's merit badge camp. We asked some questions including if they plan to reduce capacity. I was quite surprised that they intend to operate at full capacity.  Here's some other info we got from them.

    a.  All troops will be required to monitor scouts and adults temperatures daily beginning 5 days prior to arrival.

    b. Temperature checks and additional screening will be done upon arrival and daily while we are there.   (So arrive early)

    c. Face Masks/PPE will be required to be worn by all.   (Still working out those details.)

    d.  Chow Hall will be run at 50% capacity and they are looking at having pre-packaged food for all meals.  So no one has to serve, or anything like that.    Yum, Yum!!

    e. Scouts will be required to monitor temperatures for two weeks after leaving.  If anyone gets sick we must notify them immediately.

    f.  Merit Badges/Brown Sea Island will still be done but with PPE.    Not sure if PPE is just Face Masks or anything additional.    Need to bring your own face

    masks.

To be fair, I assume you are correct.  BSA simply has trouble with English and issues statements/promises/rules  that make no sense.  Then they give Scouters no practical way to get clarification.  Certainly council Scouters haven't a clue.  A common council response, as when BSA accidentally  eliminated the rule against alcohol at Scout camps [still not corrected],  is, "What?"  Major example,  a child candidate for Scout rank must "explain the Patrol method," but BSA cannot.

Do you think BSA or anyone can predict what government actions will occur this summer that affect HA camps?

"As we prepare for opening on July 1, we know there are potential barriers such as spikes in new cases that could affect this opening plan. Any changes regarding the July 1 opening will be announced no later than June 1. "  😶

Oh, really?  So if the State orders the reservation closed on June 15, Philmont will announce that development no later than June 1st. or ignore the order? No problem.  BSA is on the job.

To be fair, I don't think that's what they meant. They will comply with state law.  If NM says all is good, but then in mid-June changes to shutting things down, there's no way Philmont can know that in advance.

Any group going to any summer camp has to accept this possibility. If you can't, then you need to take the options for canceling.

Troops in the Northeast and Southeast should give serious consideration to the Summit for summer camp.  It will run for all weeks in July and the first week of August.  $415/week and you get the experience of being at the Jamboree site.  Advanced medical facilities, plenty of open room to distance single tents, huge program areas (designed for thousands but used by hundreds during summer camp) to accommodate social distancing and a very mature program staff.  If summer camp is going to take place anywhere, it will be at the Summit.

We're going to try to make this work. It's about the same drive as our planned summer camp.  They will offer an end of June session if they can get 600 participants to commit to that week.

Should we expect updates today from the HA bases? I thought I read that we'd get updates every two weeks -- 1st, 15th, 30th -- but that could have been wishful thinking or a hallucination on my part.

Late edit: just saw Philmont posted something yesterday but I'm more interested in Sea Base

As we get closer, I suspect the announcements will be much more location-specific rather than coordinated.

  9. I just got this email.

It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that, after a thorough review, the National Capital Area Council has decided to suspend our resident camp programs at Goshen Scout Reservation, Camp William B. Snyder, Camp Airy, and the Day Camp program for the 2020 summer season. We know camp is an important part of every Scout’s summer, and this decision was not made lightly. This is not the end of our summer programming, however; NCAC has assembled a team of volunteers who are designing a fun, exciting alternative program that provides advancement opportunities for our Scouts. More information on these programs will be coming soon.

At this point, it looks like it is in place until May 31.

    https://cv.nmhealth.org/2020/05/13/stay-at-home-order-extended/

    WHAT REMAINS THE SAME:

    • New Mexicans must remain home except for outings essential for health, safety and welfare, especially elderly and vulnerable individuals. If you must leave home, gatherings of more than five people remain prohibited and 6 feet of physical distance from others must be maintained.
    • Large retailers like big-box stores and grocery stores will continue operating at 20 percent capacity as determined by fire code.
    • Locations and services where high-intensity contact is unavoidable – such as gyms, salons and dine-in service at restaurants and bars – will remain temporarily closed. Limited in-person operations for those types of businesses could be included in the next modification of the public health order, as soon as early June, depending on New Mexico’s rate of COVID-19 transmission, testing capacity and other gating criteria.
    • Other high-intensity contact services that must remain closed include indoor malls, massage and tattoo parlors, theaters, casinos.
    • 14-day quarantine order remains in place for out-of-state airport arrivals.
    • Vacation rentals prohibited to out-of-state residents.
    • Visits to long-term care and other congregate care facilities remain restricted.

Not to play lawyerball, but a large percentage of Phlying Philmonters fly into Denver and drive into NM.

If you fly in May 31, is it a 1 day quarantine, increasing by 1 as you go back for 14 days into May?

Wait. They have a 14 day quarantine? Why didn’t our crew leaders know that? We arrive on the 6th of July for a trek start on the 8th and support from Blue Sky while there. I can’t easily reconcile the message to the boys of “yeah that’s the rules, but we decided they don’t apply to us.”

If that requirement isn't removed by July 1, Philmont will cancel treks.  Really, that requirement needs to end much sooner than that for rangers and staff flying in to be there in time to be trained.

Any update from Philmont given the New Mexico extension of stay at home order (until May 31)?  Is there any way Philmont can go on given the rules introduced here?

    https://cv.nmhealth.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/NM-COVID-Guidance-for-Summer-Youth-Programs.pdf

Summer Program Overview: E-learning or distance learning opportunities should be provided for all students when possible as an alternative to in person programs. In person summer programs and sports camps will be restricted to 5:1 child to adult ratios for children who live in the local geographic area only. Grab and Go meal sites for children will continue throughout the summer.

That's a good question. Philmont is a different animal and BSA has some political pull.  They MIGHT get an exception.

Blue Ridge Mountains Council just sent out word that they are cancelling all Summer Camp sessions at their two base camps and Claytor Lake.  However, they said they have made arrangements for any unit currently signed up for camp to instead go to The Summit for a week at the same cost as council camp.  Or the unit can move their fees to 2021 and go to regular camp in 2021, but at the cost for 2020.

We were set to do Powhattan there. We're discussing taking the option of Summit this summer.  Their merit badge schedule looks odd to me. Either I'm reading it wrong or they're doing some, like canoeing, in 3 hours.

Here's the schedule.  Am I reading it right that canoeing is done in 3 hours?

Not sure how NT is handling it; I'd assume the way Sea Base is...even if you're not cancelled yet you can transfer to a different HA base for next year.  I think the 10% penalty is only if you are still in the "it's on" category and request a refund.  At least that's how the email I got reads.

Tricky part will be aligning the schedule on a new SB trek with the one you already have.

They're all the same.  Our NT trek this year is at the end of July is on.  We paid for 2 crews, but can only fill 1.

We've signed up for Sea Base next year and made the first payment.  We've made our deposit.  If your trek is still on this year, but you can't make it, you can get a refund minus 10% or apply the payment to an HA trek next year.

I'm hoping that we can take 100% of our fees for the NT crew we're cancelling this year and apply it to our payment due for Sea Base next year.

  15. After polling our troop, we only have enough scouts and adults for one NT crew.  We'd signed up for 2.  Between financial issues (including not having our fundraiser) and peoples' concerns about travel, many chose to drop out.

I'm not sure where we are on payments for Sea Base next year and if we can transfer the NT credit for one crew to that or we'll get the refund minus 10%.

  16. Well, it looks like they're going to operate this summer. I'm relieved they'll waive the WFA & CPR requirements.  I also like their very reasonable policy of not just allowing people to apply to a later 2020 trek or 2021 trek but also refunds minus 10% if you just can't make it.

We're going to poll our troop to see who can/is willing to still go.  Losing our mulch fundraiser is going to be an issue for several scouts, I'm sure.  We might only be able to fill 1 crew for NT and we registered for 2.

Our Troop is sending 2 crews to Northern Tier, Ely, at the end of June, and I'm hoping it's still on as we've put deposits on most everything and final payments for Blue Sky and Southwest are coming up this week and next.  We are moving forward hopeful that it will happen, and it seems positive given the news coming out of the Mayo Clinic and that BWCAW is opening up for permits on May 5th.

Our Troop is also collecting money for summer camp, so we've got a lot of hopeful people.

    Mike

I can certainly understand your situation since you've committed the funds.  We were just about to do that when everything shut down and we've been in a holding pattern since.

I just don't see how the HA camps can expect to operate this summer.  Still no WFA classes.  People can't get physicals. Financial situations for many people will make it a challenge, too.  It's not just the virus risk, it's all the other aspects that will vary greatly troop to troop.

I hope we have the option of a refund.  We've paid for Sea Base next year, so we can't just push it off a year.
