ASM1, you accused someome about being hostile to Woodbadge? Did you mean me? I am a little confused, please help me out
-
ASM1 and Laurie, may be agree that one can be trained, although not be WoodBadge trained? Whether its New Leader Essentials, Scoutmaster Specific, or COmmitee Challenge, etc. you can be trained but not WoodBasge trained and while I agree that WoodBadge training is the most desirable, the other training is adequate to communicate the program to those who will run it?

Presenting the Northeast Region Venturing President

National President is all but a shoo-in, then the next big step, Princess of the Universe, laugh if you will, but do not inderestimate -
"One of the critera is that the organization does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, creed, age, sex, national origin or disability." The BSA does not discriminate on the above listed items, then gain, its only my opinion. Whats missing is the phrase "sexual orientation" if that was present then the BSA would qualify as a discriminating organization

What I find amazing is that the two posters who are after Bob Whites hide with the most vengeance are also ignored by other forum members as well, but its only Bob White who incurs their wrath. One is ignored by 3 users and another by 5 as this posting. Perhaps the quesiton isnt should there be squelching as much as those squelched should ponder why people (plural) dont want to be bothered by their posts? America, what a Country, where you are free to say what you want and others are free to ignore you

Wood Badge now, or later?
OldGreyEagle replied to BrentAllen's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
BrentAllen, I took WoodBadge for the 21 Century 2 years ago. At that time our Council also published it was by invitation only as well. I had put off applying for WoodBadge for years because of the invitation thing, I mean who wants to apply just to get rejected. Well, the way things are run now, if you apply and meet the requirements, trained for your position, etc, then you will be invited. BSA wants as many trained people as possible in its ranks. Hurry and apply now and be sure to tell them you want to be a member of the greatest Patrol of all times. Da'Bears -

Wood Badge now, or later?
OldGreyEagle replied to BrentAllen's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Oh FOG is cheerful, in his own fashion... -
I beleive the BSA won a lawsuit in which one of the main principles was the ability to associate with whom you choose. I beleieve using the squelch feature is just another example of associating or not associating with whom people choose. I can see how it may be hard to follow threads, but then thats not anyone's problem but the squelcher.

What is your troops favorite "camp" song?
OldGreyEagle replied to Shell in WA- USA's topic in Working with Kids
All time favorite song is the "Boy Scout Sunday School". then of course followed by Green Grow the Rushes Ho. For sheer fun you can't beat She'll Becomming 'round the mountian when she comes or all standard and non-standard verses of Clementine. Good 'ol Johnny Verbeck works at times and Star Trekkin is pretty good as well. WHen the boys want to sing they know all they have to do is put my face to a fire and I can go until the fire is out or they all leave, which is only after a few hours. The scouts will sing if the adults do and do so with gusto. I am currently reworking an old skit that I wrote with YoungSpikedEagle a few years back. Its a killer guranteed to please the youth while making more than a few scouters scratch their heads. A real crowd pleaser as Eamonn mentioned is anything you can do loud, so Froggie does it for me, and as a french Voyageur, Alouette can get raucous as well. Well those are a few, I could go on and on with songs, and poems, love shaving cream, but you have be careful with that one -
Indeed, 10-4 Good Buddy, Amen to that one, Right on, and YEAH!

Does anyone know about these guys? Are they Active? Could/Should this go national? Any thoughts? http://members.aol.com/venturecod/ (This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Too bad the bear at Goose Pond Scout Reservation didn't get the memo about not "hazing" scouts. Then again the scout should not have had food in his tent else the bear wouldnt have visited him. I know this isnt what FOG was talking about, but, when "they" say no food in the tent, "they" have reasons http://www.phillyburbs.com/pb-dyn/news/103-07022003-117903.html(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Judge rules Fiesta Island lease unconstitutional, too
OldGreyEagle replied to Merlyn_LeRoy's topic in Issues & Politics
Merlyn, or anybody else for that matter, I have a question, Merlyn, you stated above you would prefer to see another Youth group administer the grounds who are not discriminatory such as the Camp Fire Boys and Girls or 4H. Have these or any other group ever done anything like this ever? I have not heard about it, then again, being the scouter I am I have not researched out the doings of any other youth organization. So, what has been the experience of other youth organizaiton's camps on civic property? Or private for that matter? How big are they? WHat are their safety records? WHo can fill the void ? -

OldGreyEagle replied to Merlyn_LeRoy's topic in Issues & Politics
I am not sure how many more of these court decisions the BSA will have to lose before it wises up. This doing things for the public good clearly isnt working. It may have been a good idea in the past, but clearly. as Robert ZImmerman says , the times they are a-changing. If the BSA is going to spend money on property, lets buy the land, develop it and then rent it out as private property subject to our terms and conditions. Millions spent and then lost? I sure hope BSA officials are not setting up new leases such as this and FOS dollars arent going to defend what will be regrettably but definitiely losing propositions. I hope this will be done, I'd like a scouter, or maybe a Venture Crew to follow the scouting propery once its turned over to the Civil authorities. Lets get videotape of how it is now, and then every year visit those locations again, In ten years it might be fun to see how well the place has been maintained, or not, to compare usage numbers of people using the facilities and programs and them compare BSA administered numbers to non BSA administred numbers and what the comments were about the qulity of the program before and after. If this propery has to be lost, let's at least chronicle what happens and keep it as documentation. -
As pretty as the stars are, "Starry starry night..." and lyrical, page loading seems to be slowing down and if the stars are the reason or just contribute, then a starectomy is in order

Eamonn do you mean soap soap or the newer "no water" hand sanitizer thats all the rage? One caveat on the waterless sanitizer, I can see its use in the latrine setting, but not for food prep. All the sanitizer will do is rearrange dirt on a mud covered hand. Soap and water is the only hand prep acceptable prior to cooking which is what I am sure you were saying.

Our Council has two camps, both are set up similarly with regards to facilities. Both have a central shower areas with hot water (if you get there at the right time, earlier in the day the better) and flush toliets. The camp sites all have primative latrines. Two years ago I tried adding lime to the pit to combat the odor and it works. A 40 pound bag of lime on sunday and another 40 pounds on wednesday took the stink right out of the situation. I am all for modernization and making things nice for the boys, but I have never proved to be terribly consistent. Our Primitive latrines are all wood, built on a conrete slab and every day the whole edifice gets a hosing down. (each latrine also features a hand washing station and water spigot) With a high pressure nozzle and a "barn broom" (the older guys know what I mean, the younger ones ask somebody to point one out to you)and a little brisk sweeping and the place is as clean as it needs be. If a kids refusal to go to camp is based on "having an icky place as a toilet" or no flush toilets then we might have to reopen Wheelers topic on what is means to be a man (or a woman or ok how about just acting mature?). About three years ago they instlled toliet seats, it was a step up over the 2x4 framed holes. Camp latrines were never designed to be reading rooms. They serve an utilitarian purpose. N.B. One well meaning adult, against my warnings, thought adding a little bleach to the daily hosings would add to the freshened environment. All it did was render the structure unusable for about 12 hours as chlorine produces some unfortunate chemical reactions when indiscriminatley mixed with various organic substances which are manifested in the prescence of noxious fumes. Even more noxious then those occuring naturally, Fotoscout, I understand that vandalism by non-scouts is an issue, but vandalsim caused by scouts is abhorrent and as disgusting as any topic ever broached on this forum. Incredibly it happens at the Council camps where the troop goes as well. YOuth Protection says scoutmasters are to refrain from randomly going in the showers so every year a few despicables have to show what a genius they are by trashing out the place. Of course these perps are rarely found. If they would be, payment for repairing their damage plus 50 percent would not be severe enough. A very nice facility wrecked a few times can take the will out of providing nice facilities to those who act like animals quite quickly. You get what I mean? Lets not blame the Ranger or designer if the true cause of the problem are hooligans masquerading in scout apparel(This message has been edited by OldGreyEagle)

Activity requirement for advancement..
OldGreyEagle replied to billr's topic in Open Discussion - Program
So, if the scout is second class now, and wants to be Eagle, he has to complete the necessary requirements. I dont know where he is at with requirements, so I will project from First Class on. Once he is first class, he has to spend 4 months in a Position of responsibility to qualify for Star, along with earning the required merit badges and the rest. Wait, did I say "spend" I meant successfully complete 4 months. This means the expectations are laid out when the scout gets his "job". He has to meet the job requirments. Then 6 months to Life and then Eagle both with troop jobs. So, whats the "least" amount of participation he can put in to earn Eagle? All he has to do is meet the requirements, no more and no less. -
Other than the Scoutmaster had older boys peeved at her for her leadership style, and that she didnt agree she had problems with her style (not sure many of us would agree if met with a hostile bunch) Just what did/does the person do that has evryone riled up? Not having a fun troop is not the answer as everyone's view of fun is different. What can we learn from this incident? If the boys dont like you, you are toast?

Course suggestions
OldGreyEagle replied to Bob White's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
To add a bit on what Aggie mentioned, how about what the Council Office does for each unit. And I dont mean suck up FOS dollars. What committees are there on the District and then COuncil and National Level and how are members selected and what do they do and how do you get on a committee. What do the District Execs do, and how is that different from a Field Director (it is different, isnt it?) and then what does the COuncil Exec do. I know they can't be exact, but just the roles they fill in the organizaiton. -
Just bought my first pair.....
OldGreyEagle replied to le Voyageur's topic in Open Discussion - Program
It all depends if you got the money... I was in a holloween parade in the early 90s' in a white dress, white pantyhose and a Bedpan duct taped to my back, I also had a "Raphael" mask on and carried a 6 foot 1.5 inch PVC pipe painted to look like a themometer Bo You may have guessed I was a Teenage Mutant Ninja Nurse Any who, I just received a red Voyageurs cap known as a Tuoque (tuke). My charactor is really taking shape. His name is Pierre and legend has it that he got his cap from his Uncle Earl. Seems Uncle Earl was one of the first Voyageurs and Pierre wanted to follow in his footsteps. Earl was well known as a great Voyageur in his time. And in remembrance of his uncle, Pierre carries on the Voyageur tradition, he proudly paddles the canoe, portages heavy loads and wears the Tuoque of Earl. -
