  1. "So as a Cubmaster when I recruit new families who attend Scout events that would qualify? When I register new adult leaders as Pack leaders, that qualifies?" Only if they are former Scouts or Scouters. "When I do a FOS presentation and people donate --- that qualifies?" Only if they are former Scouts or Scouters. "In short, is there any bar to unit leaders and volunteers meeting these requirements in ther ordinary course of their volunteers activities?" Just with the stipulations above. This is an Alumni award, not a recruiting or fund-raising award (although th
  2. "I am talking about the requirement that states "Make contact with at least 5 adult alumni, not currently registered with the BSA, engage them in a serious discussion about the Scouting program, provide them each with an Alumni Connection card and follow-up to see if they have visited the web site." I would think that in order to engage them in a serious discussion you would have to talk to them face to face, and that provide them each with an Alumni Connection card would be a business card like card with instructions on how to register at the website. I may be totally wrong and th
  3. "Should a person choose, it is possible to not ever directly pay a tobacco tax, gasoline tax, highway toll or property tax." The only way to avoid paying property tax is to have no car and live in a cardboard box (or a tent in the wilderness). [Oops... I forgot about government-owned apartments.](This message has been edited by Woapalanne)
  4. "I also prefer what's working now, which means public schools can't run private clubs that discriminate on the basis of religion. " Then they can allow no clubs. EVERYBODY discriminates on the basis of religion. Everybody. Baptists discriminate against Methodists, Christians against Buddhists, Muslims against everybody else, Athiests against believers, ad infinitum. That includes everybody.
  5. Definitely trim excess, if any. And in some cases, sew under the border, to keep the appearance.
  6. I have an official (BSA) green tie that I wear to more formal events, and an official blue one from my Cubmaster days that I don't wear anymore. Being District, connected to no unit, I suppose I can wear my neckerchief (have several of those but don't own a necker) as I prefer - over OR under. (My preference is over - with the collar folded under - anything else just looks goofy to me.)(This message has been edited by Woapalanne)
  7. In a fair world, the term "redneck" would be just as unacceptable as the "N-word".
  8. Bevah said "The young folks in the Arab world are on the right side of history, and more importantly are on da right side of liberty and justice." Actually, we don't know that. Nor do we know they are on the wrong side. I'm old enough to remember that we thought Fidel Castro was "..on the right side of history, and more importantly are on da right side of liberty and justice." We won't know whether they are on the right or wrong side unless and until they win and we see what they bring forth.
  9. Correct, but only if you remove "Southern". I know from personal experience there are more rednecks in Michigan than in South Carolina. :^) (For example.)
  10. "In the process, we talked ABOUT slurs. Nobody ADDED any ethnic slurs." WRONG! The "redneck" comment was most definitely an ethnic slur. A politically acceptable slur, but a slur nonetheless.
  11. Carpet tape would be my choice. It is permanent, strong, but can be peeled off without damaging the patch. I've even used it to mount my miniature medals (non-Scout of course) and it did not damage the ribbons. Available at your local hardware store or big box home supply.
  12. But I do have to ask: why is the name of this knot PLURAL? It's for individuals, right? It should be "alumnus" knot.
  13. NESA membership is not a requirement for Alumni for most.
  14. Hmmm. Since the strips are for a second language, and I'm a deep South native, I think the "Yankee" would be helpful for those around me. I have family in Noo Yawk and Mitchi-gan, so I speak a reasonable amount of those languages.
  15. " these do not make me special, or deserving of special privilege, they are reminders of my enhanced obligation" Old Ox, I agree. And I say exactly the same of my white-bordered flap.
  16. Thanks, jzweiac. A couple of days ago it wouldn't go beyond the "you are already registered" page. Now I have the training part done. What little there was.
  17. So.... does anybody know when the "Alumni Site" will be set up? Especially since we are supposed to be doing some training on said site.
  18. 1952 Ford Sunliner convertible. Dad had it towed into the back yard, with a blown engine. I think he paid $150 for it. He said I could have it, but I had to do all the repairs first, including buying the parts. When we were finished, it had a '53 Merc engine with 3/4 cam and other goodies. Custom bodywork and paint. Took all summer. Fun car, and what I learned from Dad has saved me many dollars over the years.
  19. Here's a trick I've found that makes the nametag stay upright, and also makes your patches look neater. Whenever I buy a new shirt I go to my local "big box" store and buy the pack of iron on repair fabric. It's available in a tan that matches our shirts fairly well. I cut 2 pieces the width of a pocket, one as high and one half as high. I then iron it INSIDE the shirt just above the pocket. The taller one goes on the right pocket to keep the Jambo emblem straight, the short one goes over the left pocket. Makes for a very neat and "uncluttered" uniform shirt. To keep the pla
  20. The most active, dedicated Scouter I know - one who has been Scoutmaster, Cubmaster, led posts and ships, pioneered in Youth Protection, served at Summer Camp, led many merit badge sessions, been to a dozen Jamborees, absolutely LOVED by many Scouts (and their parents) - - has 17 knots on his uniform. Don't tell ME he is in it for the glory - because that would be an absolutely ignorant statement. To say that lots of knots means they are not involved with Scouts shows ignorance of just what involvement means.
  21. Oak Tree said " Unlike any person, or any company, the US government has the ability to create money. Therefore I view it as very unlikely that the government would ever technically become bankrupt. " Yes, they have the ability to create money. What the government does NOT have is the ability to create wealth. (The two are not the same.) If they create more money and the total wealth stays the same, then the money is simply devalued. It's called inflation.
  22. When I said the SS IOUs were worthless, I mean in this way: If I have some cash, and someone takes that cash from me and replaces it with IOUs that I have to pay, then they are of no value in replacing my money. No value = "worthless". Second point: Eliminating the upper limit will not have any positive effect on the solvency of SS. Why? Your payout is directly based on your pay-in. If the upper limit is removed, the high wage earners will certainly pay in more. But they will receive proportionally more in return. Net long term effect? Zero.
  23. Excellent points, Eagle. The only real problem with SS is all the money that has been siphoned off over the years for other purposes, replaced with worthless IOUs. BOTH parties are guilty, but I will leave it up to the reader to check which party had total control of Congress when this started in the 60s - 80s. (Edited to repair a typo.)(This message has been edited by Woapalanne)
  24. Acco and Beavah, double the numbers in your calculations. There is no difference in what is paid in whether you are self employed or work for someone else. The total max is still over $13k a year because your employer matches you. Out of the funds he has set aside for labor costs. You have to use all the funds contributed by/for you to have an accurate comparison. I did some calcs a few years ago. If I could have invested for myself what I paid to SS for only the last 10 years I worked (forget the other 35), I would be retired on well over triple the monthly money, and pass the entir
  25. Disagree, Shemaqua. Passports (and the establishment of the State Department that issues and regulates them) is covered under Section 8. The Constitution is supposed to be the Supreme Law of the Land, and all other laws subservient to it. Except international treaties, of course.
