  1. Hi, I think that I've noted before that I like to give a small cash gift & one of the Eagle mugs. All of my scouts know that mugs are my preferred collectible (along w/ neckerchiefs) so they acccept that particular gift graciously. Perhaps I'll have to design my own Neckerchief.... Maybe Knot! Bob
  2. Evening, Definitley err on the side of respect.... In spite of being one of eight children I grew up spending a lot of time with my parents & their friends who were active in our church and community. Adults were always Mr. ___or Mrs. ___ and even when I became a teen ager / young adult I think that they apprecieated the title. (Even aftewr some had invited me to call them by theitr first name. As a "retail clerk" ( checker / stockboy) i quickly learned the value of addressing every male as Sir (or Mr.) and every female as Miss. The males all wanted to be mature
  3. Thanks Dave, now I know why an old "Dan of Steele" remark fell flat. I'll try to pay closer attention. Bob White, there are times that e-mail doesn't allow for nuance. Two points, first I wasn't speaking of my unit except in the sense that I'm the DC in the case of the examples that I gave. Second I take tenure very seriously. My unit, the one in which my son & I are active has a curious past. Founded in the 1920's its charter lapsed in the 40's. With district re-allignment when the parish chartered a troop in the late sixties it was assigned a new number. (I don't know if the
  4. I enjoy word games as much as anyone... but in lighjt of another recent thread: Does the unit keep its tenure when its number is reassigned to a new chartered partner or is the tenured party the chartered partner?

    Merit Badge Sash

My son Conner came up with spacing 12 required to fill the top of the sash & adding the elective below. His special twist was to start them chronologically at the point where the two come together. Eagle Required read up, Electives down. This filled up the center of the sash first. As to the possibility of earning the extra Eagle required, "I guess that they'll catch your eye and if anyone asks I'll explain" Sometimes he really impresses me.
  6. I'd think seriously about tranfering the charter, but I see two sides. You keep the history & memorialize the CR (Chartered org Rep?) that was so highly respected, but you risk the bad name associated w/ your reccent relatuionshoip w/ the old Partner. I was mistaken earlier, one chartering organization dropped scouting because of the gay issue and two new Partners were found; neither of the new partners was prepared to adopt Pack & Troop, and each was allowed to retain the"old number". We also had one church pick up the charter for the pack which had been chartered by a ne
  7. Which reminds me that my father-in-law "swears" that he thought "damned democrats" was one word until he got to college. (He was raised in Thos. Dewey's hometown!) Again just a cute story... "Write it down!" Bob

  9. If your heart is set on transferring the charter go for it. We've had 2 units do just that over the last three years. The parents felt that the history was w/ the families & the old Partner was actually happy to see the Unit number live on even though they no longer held the charter. Know that while the law varies from state to state the question of who owns what is partly addressed by BSA in Article XI, Section 1, Clause 2 of the Rules & Regulations of the BSA. IN the event that a unit is not rechartered the funds and property that were "owned" by the unit become the prope
  10. Sorry Mark. I probably started my reply about the same time that you did & didn't get a chance to read it before mine appeared, but I've no regrets. I'll stand behind my view of tolerance. Bob
  11. Eammonn Well said when you shifted from religion to God. And I'll take a turn at the other side from a different angle. For all that we hear about being Anti-gay I believe that Sciouts (and even National) should emphasize that our stand alllows for the greatest possible diversity among those who share the "three aims of scouting." (Character, Citizenship, & Fitness.) I have friends who changed their plans & left "the Six Foot Mouse's Magic Kingdom" when they realized that they had booked a vacation with their two young children for the "unofficial" gay week Disney.
  12. I'm sorry that I wasn't able to read this article. I tried cutting & pasting, do you recall the actual root from the firehouse.com homepage? (I'd really like to pass it on to a cub's dad if I can connect. Joe's a firefighter.)
  13. Minsi Trails had a nice wallet sized card titled "Grace at Meals" that was distributed at the 1997 Jamboree which included the "Philmont Grace". I actually picked mine up at NE region DayCamp school 1998, Broadcreek. The card was actually 2-1/2 X 10" and folded down to wallet size; it contained specific morning, noon & evening graces & benediction... "May the Great Master of all Scouts be with us till we meet again. Amen" Does anyone out there from Minsi Trails know if its still available? Bob
  14. Okay guys, I know that this probably has limited interest / opportunities but does anyone have any ideas... (PS "Guys" works w/ all of my family... including 4 sisters & 9 nieces. No offense intended)
  15. Please return to your seats... the pilot has just lit the "Please fasten your seat belt sign". Severe left turn... Best tip o' the day... We just returned from BOY Scout Resident camp. While there we invited our host ( 1st day guide in this case) to join us in the troop photo. He was delighted, in 3 years he had never been asked to do so. Needless to say we ordered an extra copy of the picture for Darien!
  16. Thanks Eamonn, The people in these forums are often a step ahead of our council personnel, by accident or design. I was surprised that I couldn't find a web page for the Northeast regiuon that had that had Nat'l camp school training listed....
  17. Good Morning! I'm looking for training dates for Day Camp Administrators in the Northeast region ( Camp & Program directors.) We've just wrapped up for this year & while I'm retiring after 5 years & have my replacement lined up... she's not trained yet! AAANNNDDD!!!We only have 50 weeks before the kids come back! But seriously she is gung-ho, we've taken a week off and I've promised to help w/ the de-frief and initial planning for next year but she wants treaining NOW! Any ideas on dates for 2003-04?
  18. ASM514, take it private or sign off. You've been asked by two others to cut the rudeness, I'm number 3. Many of us enjoy the forums but don't have time to waste wading through name calling & insults. I take everything I read hear with a grain of salt, sometimes two. You probably will wait a long time for an offline resaponse from BobWhite but go for it if you upon insist comparing accolades. I've spent the last week working w/ Cub Scouts & Den Chiefs & adult volunteers at Day Camp. The one thing that I say almost as often as "That' Super!" or "Remember, Do Your Best"
  19. This calls for Frog training.... perhaps they could be trqained to hop off before washing & back on afterwards. Has anyone come across bars for locating 3 or 4 devices correctly. I'm considering sewing 3 or 4 tiny holes above the pockets for service stars & name tag. (Kinda like button holes.) I'm also sewing impaired but have taken pride in doing all my own as well as my own shirt ironoing (pressing?) for years. Any ideas???
  20. Hi, I didn't mean to hijack the thread and I guess I expected the types of responses that I rec'd. We are alos planning on allowing all the children in our tot lot to make the rounds of arts & crafts field / table games some other activities. A few of our packs have also gotten into spring recruiting in a big way and while we had not planned on Tigers this year ( and we won't add them withg 10 days notice! ) I was curious as to what was happening in other dist / councils. I see the Partnewr requirement as a definite problem for Day Camp. I'm not missing some waiver am I???? Bob
  21. Twocubdad's guidelines work just fine for us. We mix our packs but keep boys separasted by rank and so "natural" dens are out, but we pick up a few volunteers who come because both their sons can attend. (Totlot has helped also.) We are not inviting Kindergarten graduates this year -- is anyone else running Tigers all week? We kicked around the idea of inviting all new Tigers in the District to our closing show and picnic -- we will require parental attendance w/ Tigers. Bob
  22. Hi, I just reread this thread and realized I'd missed the link.... Take a look at www.geocities.com/o_sheffler/experien3.html#finding This was posted in March by ExperiencedUniforms. I'm sorry that I dropped the ball earlier. Bob
  23. Thanks Dan, I'm hoping that they'll let me take a look at the files and try to come up with some evidence of rechartering. This was early in the packs 2nd life and we have pictures from each year w/ 20 to 30 boys in the pack alone. (At that point the troop only had a dozen or so.) One of my biggest concerns was the switch in district rechartering dates. It just seemed like a natural place for a mistake to occur. Thank again.
  24. Good morning! Our Pack & Troop were reborn 15 years ago by a group of dedicated parents who remembered the "good old days". They did a great job and my son & I joined about 10 years ago. When I rec'd some training & moved into unit leadership I realized that the tenure was out of sync. Somehow our pack had dropped for a year 12 years ago. Council tells us that they "have no records from the pack for that year." In fact they keep the info from 2 years prior in a "Historic File" instead of the "Active File" since we let our charter lapse. I've contacted our former Comm. C
  25. Ed, I am very sorry that this loss has come into your life and the lives of those in your unit. The prayers of Pack, Troop & Crew 88 are with the young man's family, your unit & all who were touched by this tragedy. I especially encourage our youth to remember the good those who have died have done & the families they have left behind. We will share your request for prayers with those in our network. Bob
