  1. Once in a speech prior to deployment to the Med for 6 months a General said:

"Through out history Marines have been committed to actions in our nations defense. Some in the press say our involvement in history has kept our nation free. That's a lot of bull. There is a tremendous difference between commitment and involvement.

When you ate bacon and eggs at the chow hall this morning, the chicken was involved. However, the pig was committed to that breakfast. That is the fundamental difference between commitment and involvement."

  2. SueM,

I get that from people all the time and it's a bit tiring. The Marine Corps has an ugly mission. Innocence is lost 15 seconds after meeting the man with the smokey the bear hat on. You assume an awful lot when you think I want them to act like Marines. You assume I've lost the fact that they are kids. Can you guess my height, weight and zodiac sign too? I'd say you need a little diversity training if you walk around with that many preconceived notions. All of us don't drag our knuckles.

99.9% of these kids are never going to be Marines.

Nor do I ever expect any of them to act like Marines except when:

They put their patrol before themselves.

They would do all within their power to help someone in dire straights.

They put forth maximum effort to improve themselves and their nation.

They look out for and defend those that are weak.

The 'Corps leadership traits are for leaders. I've always thought the Scout oath and law were for personal virtue, the traits (and this entire thread for that matter) focus on leadership.

I would also add that a patrol leader should love his charges as his sons. A effective leader's job is to care for his people. Mission first, men always.

  3. Yes the Kool aid ref is for Jim Jones. True believers drank the kool aid. One of my liberal demorat cutomers calls me a kool aid drinker when ever I support our president. I don't know anything about kool aid and drugs.

    Enlighten me.

I did not nor will I ever accuse somebody here of drug abuse.

I believe I opened the political can of worms.

    I don't believe I was wrong.

OJ surely murdered his wife and her waiter. He was found not guilty by a bunch of folks that probably have not been treated very well in their past and you could see why they voted the way they did.

Clinton later admitted he had relations with Flowers.

It is possible the smartest lady in the world did not know but I doubt it. As a New York state resident I am appalled that we have 16 million people here and we had to import a candidate from Arkansas. can you say stepping stone to the White House?

T'was later found that it was not Mayonaise on the dress. And my kid had to hear enough about willie's breaking the vow's to his wife and swearing before God that he would be truthful. Treat you daughter's mother like that and you are filth, pure and simple.Enough nightly news about what he did that my child had to ask what type of sex it was.

Foley is a nasty man. I'm available for the firing squad if needed.

Ted Kennedy is guilty of Manslaughter, yet the true believers, the kool aid drinkers still vote for him.

I am assuming you think Mr. Bush is a liar and the war is illegal.

As far as it being an illegal war, I was at the Kuwaiti International Airport when it was explained to us that we would take our foot off Saddam's throat if he abided by what the UN said. years later he did not. So we put our foot back on his throat. Quite simple to a knuckle dragger like me. the term chickenhawk does not apply.

I was in Kuwait when no earthly force on the planet could have removed us. Then we promptly left. So much for blood for oil. So much for conquest. So much for the dribble about us pumping the Middle East dry.

I believe the media will lose this just like they lost Vietnam. Kerry admitted he was guilty of War Crimes(there's no statute of limitations by the way) and made life tougher for those who still served.

How many Cambodians, Laotians and Vietnamese died because we did not complete that mission?

Was Lyndon Johnson a real democrat or would you just like to forget him?

Was Robert Byrd really in the KKK just for free linen?

There is no shortage of dirt on either side of the aisle.

    Nixon and Foley resigned.

Byrd and Kennedy still serve. Bill Clinton still thinks reporters should be ashamed of themselves.(Chris Wallace)

It is hypocracy to say you love the Troops yet think their mission is not worthy. I know they are robots that got bad grades and had nothing better to do. I joined because the circus would hire me. I am a minority so that is why Charlie Rangel(who by the way voted against his own military draft bill last year) thinks I joined.

    Fuzzy,

You admit you have trouble telling what is right. If things are that fuzzy for you please don't insult my president. I do not think you are a drug abuser.

Many mistakes have been made in Iraq. War is not a chess game. There are no do overs. In WW2 an island in the Aleutians was invaded by the US Army. There were 24 soldiers killed because of blue on blue rifle fire. No Japanese were on the island at all. Today Mr. Roosevelt would have been lambasted if that happened.

Back on topic I thought HUNT said it best.

I think it is sad that this happened to this lad. He did something unacceptable in this day and age.He had to learn the hard way. Atleast he and others were not physically harmed.

  4. Hunt,

I think you hit the nail on the head.

    To All

I would think there would still be those, that if the Eagle was awarded after a year probation/remorse/whatever, that would say,"Look at what Chuckie did he still got the Eagle award".

Chuckie still has "lot of 'splainin' to do".

I wonder if slavery would have been abolished if some people in Boston hadn't been so darned judgemental of those slave holders in the south.

  5. The Scouter who told the lad to go ahead, where is his integrity.

Why is he not saying, "Yes I emailed Toby with changes and told him to go ahead, I just never got around to signing the form."?

Let the man come forward and admit that he also was asleep on the job.

  6. In the margin this morning there is a link to sex-crime lawyer.us.

I clicked on it and they will find an attorney to defend you against a whole raft of unpleasent behavior.

Is this website really that hard up for money that we need advertising like this?

Everyone has the right to an attorney but not to advertise here.

If money is needed to run the website we can have a FOScouter.com drive.

  7. It's late: let's add some gallows humor!

Sienfeld's Soup Nazi would have known how to handle this:

    "No board for you...next!

The mom must have seen the episode where George gives the cleaning lady the cashmere sweater with the red spot on it.

They have a situation after work...the boss fires him for such action caught on tape..."You never spefically said that was prohibited, because if you did, I would not have done that."

  8. There were days (not too long ago) where SHAME would have kept the kid from even asking. That would have come from the mother and been taught in the HOME.

Unfortunately for this kid he has neither

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

You know who said it--------have we lost this?

  9. I think you should pass the kid. Look at the genes he got from his dear mother. She is one dim bulb.

Hey lady when your son commits a felony in a post Sept.11th ,post Timothy McVeigh world and gets caught with a potentially dagerous item you should really shut up!

Kudos to the SM. Though I would not resign because I do not let those who are inferior to me shape my destiny. The lad is not inferior, I burned my share of blackpowder as a lad. I also wasn't a Scout at the time. The mom needs a psych eval. Hey lady let's raise heck about this maybe we could give the local newspaper a call and you could tell them how Mr. Scouter is picking on "Billy the potential Bomber".

Let's see obedient to the laws of my community, that's somewhat important here. The lad's judgement is in question. What kind of product came from this character factory?????????

Anybody that would pass a felon in an Eagle BOR without some sort of time served beyond the major judgement lapse really doesn't know what the Eagle Award is. Yes Calico, no where does it say that he can't. They leave it up to the SM.The CO picks the SM based on his judgement in dealing with the boys in his Troop. All of Scouting is based on the CO. I live in a small town where everybody knows everything. Our CO would not be happy to say, "Here's our best and brightest shining star"

Give the kid a year, if he's an angel and truly remorseful the SM will know it.

If he does something again he won't be able to vote, own a firearm, sign for a loan, you name it. For good reason a felony stays with you forever.

What is the kid really like? Does the kid live in a rural area where he could have blown the thing off in a benign area? He has a LNT issue. Or does the kid live in a tight suburban or urban community where there is no benign area? Was the thing loaded with powder and a fuse? I think it would be tough to call it a felony for two threaded caps and a 3" diam by 6" nipple not put together. First glance makes you think the thing was loaded and fuse installed why else plead guilty?

The folks on the BOR did the boy a favor and saved him more embarassment.

Oj Simpsom, Slick Willie lying on 60 minutes before the election(his wife, my Senator lied too.) and wagging that bent finger of his after he got caught again---the world has really changed.

With repect to you but not to your sense of right and wrong I totally disagree with the following:

The issue here isn't the lads felony conviction.

The issue here is that the Board of Review refused to perform their duty. It sounds like the Board was trying to do right by Scouting and this Scout but went about it in the wrong way.

I read it a few times and I think you are dead wrong!

It was a vast right wing conspiracy!!!!!!!!!!!!

Record expunged??? Just let this kid apply for a handgun permit or a security clearance for the military we'll see how expunged it is.

"Mr. Scouter never told me that I wasn't really supposed to make a pipe bomb. I never saw where it said that in the Scout handbook."

Mom said, "They're picking on my Jimmie we'll get a lawyer and sue you all!"

We really are in the last days.

  10. E,

I will not say you are being cheap.

    Let's rethink this.

Your son, when asked what he wants as a Christmas gift picked what he sees as a way to help him excell in a wholesome activty.

This says to me that he will stay involved with this activity as he goes onto college and after.

If he was involved in Key Club or some other org that required him to dress in a suit and tie and he asked that his gift be a suit and tie that was a little better quality/price than one might normally purchase would you still have question?

I know a suit can be worn to other occasions. But, do you see my point. I think he sees this as putting his best foot forward.

As a young Marine I purchase a poly/wool uniform shirt for around $35 dollars. That was a lot of money then, did I need it?

No, I already had 3 issued cotton shirts that were serviceable.

I think I got alot more for my money than those guys that drank $35 away that weekend.

He could have said, "I want "grand Theft Auto version 2.0 with the fully auto weapons version".

  11. I think if the fallen warrior's folks were asked if he was a Scout they would say "yes". I would too. I don't recall anything ever being made as far as tenure is concerned.

I hope you honor him as some of your active Scouts may know who he was.

Someday if they become leaders in the Troop they will remember him each time the Troop color is unfurled.

  12. As a WEEB den leader I gave each Scout a 3 foot section of rope, real rope to practice knots with. We would also tie knots at meetings. So it became one more thing, along with the book, not to bring. I also required something to write with.

Things got so bad with kids leaving their book home that I told them if everybody brought their stuff we would have a half hour Yuggio party. It took five meetings before they earned the party and steadily more and more boys complied because of the peer pressure.

I might add that I am against rewarding folks for things they are supposed to do as common tasks but short of barring the door it was the path of least resistance to get the scout and parent to do the minimum

  13. As both a Scouter and a proud former member of the finest battalion of Marines in the 'Corps I have forwarded this to the Beirut Veterans Assoc. One person there said he was a regular on their website.

"if the Army and the Navy ever look on heaven's scenes they will find the streets are guarded by United States Marines"

    We came in Peace.

  14. ahh guys, I'm not a Mom.

But thank you for all the replies

Actually he started the Lifesaving MB last Thursday. He had fun.

Wednesday one of the ASM's took the "cherubs" aside and did some advancement. He's back on track and brought his book to school to get a sign off from the School Nurse.

  15. uz2bafox,

Some parents have only enough grease to use under the skids of their own kids runners.

I think those are parents you don't need.

You see the same genes in sports. Coach's kid does all the pitching. Coach's kid gets the most playing time in soccer.

When I run something everyone is invited. My kid is no longer in Cub Scout yet I am still on the committee.

As an ASM you must believe in the movement. At that position it is not longer about just your kid. Let the COH know what is going on and ask for his(the ASM's) patch. and be sure to tell him why.

Pure selfishness, I could fly into an honest to goodness rage everytime I see it.

Let people know the extent of your rage, small or big , and find a couple of other Dad's that are just waiting for you to ask them. Be sure to let them know you expect them to be there for all the boys.

  16. Two years ago we made a Pack trip to the Boston aquarium and USS Constitution. The council and the folks at Camp Sayre were very accodating. The next closest "t" stop is the better parking area. There is something bad about the closest stop. I think there were problems with leaving the cars in a not so nice parking lot.

    Good Luck.

remember Ironsides is a National Historic site---you will be searched. Also try to see the USS Cassin Young---she is about a block away. As a Marine I wanted to man the"tops" and snipe at boarders but they said I'd be arrested if I climbed the rigging. The ship "oozes" history. She was sent to deal with the radical Muslims of her day---the Barbary Pirates--a little steel on target helped settle that little scuffle---We didn't

have CNN then. No John Carri 2 put us cervis mens down. He's is wrong I joined the Mareens 'cuz the circus wouldn't take me.
