  1. Just to clear up some tings about my reserve non-perisabe food.

This is what we do at our Cub Scout Pack. Younger kids are at the mercy of their parents. Our troop does not have that. They just chose to eat poptarts on sunday.

Now the oatmeal and granola that we have on hand is not the prefered kind. But it is available.

  2. Troop24

You are the bomb. That is exactly what I was looking for. I too think I will have it laminated.

On another note I think that I found it yesterday, but my computer locked up and all shut down before the file fully opened.

  3. After every campout we reaize things that we need. I was wondering if anyone out there had an electronic copy of the fire guard roster and emergency fire procedures that we have a seen at camp. I wanted to start posting these responsibilities when we camp.

  4. Something else that I remembered from my days as a staff member at a summer camp.

If someone overslept and did not arrive for breakfast, which happeded on occasion, then the LARGE bell from the boating area was retrieved and rang outside the cabon window.

Our senior summercamp staff here have airhorns. Seldom does somon oversleep.

Do you have a bugler, maybe some reville would be an order.

  5. Sounds like mamabear needs to let her son know that if they wait for one person to wake up then it will set everything back.

I would suggest, however, keeping something that does not spoil on hand that the young lad can eat. Oatmeal, dry cereal, granola bars. that way you avoid the long time without food. If he wakes up after breakfast and has missed the hot chow that is provided, he still has something to eat. I did this with a parent/son combo that constantly woke up after breakfast dishes were done. Sometimes by an hour. I told the parent that there was oatmeal in the box. That is what he had.

You cannot change a schedule because one child "wants more sleep." If you were to do that then return times would be backed up by several hours.

I also understand that there are not many "morning" persons. I can be that way. But this scout needs to understand that this is part of scouting.

  6. Hello

I have a few points that I have noticed at our OA functions:

Your concern about him not earning them is not that big of a deal. I know a lot of people that are trading patches that they did not earn. They usually buy them prior to an event and take them into trade, or they may get extras from an event so they have something later to trade.

As for him being an adult, our Lodge and Section came up with a Patch Trader code.

    - Trade remembering the scout law

    - No monetary amounts may be exchanged

    - Close every deal with a hand shake.

That is something to think about.

  7. here is my 2 cents. Take it for what you like.

The boys sleep atire is completely up to them, we should not be in thier tents anyway. THAT is YP

If a young man has returned from their evening shower and happens to be outside of the tent without a shirt, that may not be an issue. They just need to understand that (if yo live in an area like I do) there is a chance that they are going to get more insect bites.

The daytime factor is something that you can control a little more. This becomes an issue of sunburn. This is a safety issue. Cut and Dry. A sunburned scout makes for a miserable event. Not to mention the days after that it hurts. I can attest to this as I have had this happen to me personally. I got a bad sunburn prior to a military field training mission. Equipment hurts when sunburnt.

Having the normal pick-up game of shirts and skins: OK if in the campsite, but on an activity field where every scout and staff member is going by, not so much.

There are other times when going shirtless may not be the best, like when cooking. Especially when cooking bacon.

  8. How about, My body lies under the ocean

(When the word up is saod, everyone stands up)

To the tune of my Bonnie

My Body Lies under the ocean

My Body lies under the sea

My body lies under the ocean,

So dredge up my body for me

    Dreeeeedge UP, Dreeeeedge UP,

Oh Dredge up my body for me, for me

    Dreeeeedge UP, Dreeeeedge UP,

Oh dredge up my body for me.

  9. Gary

When I presented the request to the Chapter, I asked if the youth, if they would come out and conduct this ceremony. They said yes. The four boys who were supposed to be coming were at the meeting. So it is not like they did not agree to it and were told that they were being forced to do it.

The youth are the ones that have expressed the interest in doing more ceremonies. So the statement of they are not the driving force is inaccurate. The ceremonies advisor works with the youth "Vice-Chief of Indian Affairs/Ceremonies" to make sure that ceremonies are not doube booked and make sure that the regaia is there.

We guide our youth, and they are expected to take responsibility.

  10. The work was wel done and they have shown what it is that scouts do. Should they get some kind of recognition, yes. Maybe if you have some kind of special reward laying around you can give it to them. I know that we used to have a bunch of wooden nickles and would give them out to the scouts that did something like this. Maybe you could look into this.

So a persons word is not as valuable as it used to be. My SM would have whooped my tail. Then again he would have driven me if I had no ride. Then again rules were different then.

My main point is that on TWO occasions they said that they would be there. If they had said no then that woud be a different story.

Also, the chapter is trying to get active in ceremonies and stuff, so this is something that the youth wanted to do.

  12. We did something similar to your golden spoon. We called it Iron Chef Troop XX. Worked out ok. One patrol would have won hands down if they had worked as a team.

We gave them a package of ingrediants and they had to come up with the meal. One patrol got italian sausage and egg noodles, the other got stew beef and rice. There were aso apples, onion, and a pepper. The first patrol just made like a stir fry. The other tried to make a pretty cool sushi "looking" dish. They had the it put together in llayers. Pepper on bottom, layer of onion, then some beef. Served it on a bed of rice. THey kinda baked the apple Their down fall, NO TEAMWORK

The other team won the Iron Chef Award. It was a plate, fork, spoon and knife attached to a plaque. The plate had a decal in the center that said Iron Chef Troop XX.

I think that a good competition is good for the boys. As long as they have something to show off. It will cause the other patrols to work harder for the spoon next time.

  13. Hobo's

Use those frozen burger patties. (They are thinner than the home made so they cook quicker_

    Sliced Sweet potato

Other toppings and sauces to add flavor.

Wrap up, place on hot bed of coals, maybe takes 15 minutes. (Flip about half way through.)

Open up and enjoy. WHen you are done, throw you plate (Foil) in the recycle bin.

Maybe you can talk to the local fast food burger joint and see if they will donate a box of patties and wrapping foil. (The kind like they line to-go containers with or wrap potatoes in.

  14. Maybe it is the idle hands.

Maybe someone might want to see if there is something that the young lad may want to do. I know that we try to give our boys some options when we go on our campouts.

Maybe have him come up with an activity.

Does he have any other family in the area. Remember that Cub Scouts need to have an adult that is specifically assigned to during campouts. IF the person bringing the boy is not a direct parent, review the YP rules and have some fun.

Someone was right, maybe this is a great leader, in a tough shell, that just needs to be given a chance.

  15. First off, I see that everyone jumped on all of the, G2SS and check the age activities. Why are we critiquing their planning when she asked for help on something totally different. Apples and Oranges.

    -KJ-

It is obvious that this boy needs a good role model. It is not something that will fix overnight. Next trip, I would talk with the other males that are going (or just pick a few) and ask them if they could help.

"You'll sit this one out," are again met with "I don't care."

Don't make Idle Threats. If you say that he will sit a session out, the make sure that you follow through if he continues with the behavior. If you don't then it shows the other boys that they can get away with it. Judge the time on the activity. Say you have 30 minutes of playing soccer and he has caused trouble. Maybe if he has to sit 10-15 minutes out of the game then gets to return, not only does he learn that you are serious, but he still gets to partake in the event.

"Somebody could get hurt." "I don't care."

Tell him that personal safety is no joke and that if someone intentionally gets hurt then the whole trip may have to be cancelled. Stand you ground on this. Safety is no joke.

"Your stuff could get ruined." "I don't care."

Start out by saying that if he wants toruin his stuff, then he wil be the one with the 'torn tent' or the 'broken hiking stick.' Let him know that it will only ruin his stuff. But also tell hiim that in no uncertain circumstances will you let him damage someone elses porperty.

    Hope this helps.

  16. Born

I will be bringing this up at the next chapter meeting. Guess it helps that there is some time between when the event happened and when the chapter meeting is. Gives me lots of time to cool down. I will also remember the scout law and try to follow it when I am speaking.

I understand that this is not only a youth failure. I understand that there is also an adult failure. Ceremonies Advisor changed and things failed. I just tend to think that it is no excuse. But that is my opinion. I have always thought of OA as what they are, Honor Campers. I have always thought of them as Scouts with a greater show of responsibility.

But anyway, thank you all for the advise. I may post what the outcome of this topic.

  17. There are many things that leaders need to understand. Sometimes a pushy boss is the way to go. Sometime a leader that works with those that they are leading is they way to go.

A well defined duty roster will helpl with asigning responsibilities dirung camping activities.

Example: You have a scout that does nothing to help. He has the responsibility to get the cooking fire going. He needs to understand that patrol depends on him.

At meetings I like what one said with the TwoCubDad Said about having the boy leave the area.

Leadeship takes tact. It is something that take time and effort to learn.

  18. I see some of these problems too with our troop. The PL is trying to plan meals and assignments for the campout and everyone else wants to run around and goof off.

I had a PL ask me one time wehn I was guiding him with planning the duty roster and meals. He asked me, I have a hard time planning meals and duties because not everyone shows up. He said that he has some that show up for the campouts without helpling with the planning. I told him "Simple fix, plan your meals with who is here, fill the roster with who is here. Then fill the ones that only show up for camping into the empty slots." He said "Can I do that" I tod him yes, he is the patrol leader and that he has a responsibiity to the patrol. If they complained about the food tel them to show up and help plan. Same with the duty roster.

I aso noticed that one day he was the only one that was in uniform. I asked him why his patrol didn't wear them, and he said that he did not know. I said, why don't you have them start wearing them to meetings. His only question, "I can do that?!?!?!"

We are going to have a training session soon, but there will always be guidance that is needed.

  19. Maybe make up fake black holes that lead into each area where you activities are going on.

Have a space shuttle making decorating contest.

Do not forget the 2010 Space Odessey Song. (Athough I think tha large monolith would be beyond the boys)

Maybe bring out a camera or camera crew and do space announcments.

    Model rockets

Whack the Death Star (Pinata) (make the stick a broom handle that looks like a light saber)]

Light saber fights, (Use the Fun-noodle)

Sing alone to the Y-O-D-A Yoda song by Wierd Al

Take the buckin bronc and turn it into the jet ski looking things that they were racing through the woods on the planet Endoor

Maybe have someone dress up like the robot from 'Lost in Space' and they can go around and say "Danger Will Robinson, DANGER"

Maybe have some "Trouble with Tribbles" (Maybe a Large amount of the little pom-poms around at all stations and boys collect them and bring them back to HQ

Get a moon bounce to use on site

That is all I can come up with for right now

  20. This was one that my aunt played on my cousin as he had played a great one onher the year before.

My cousin had always known the County Sherriff. From both sides of the law. (He was the type of teen who got severall rides home.)

Anyway, there had been a B&E incident at a locall business. THe security camera had footage of the intruder. The sherriff, (not a deputy) stopped by my cousins house and asked him to come down to the station to tallkl with him about something. My cousing took his truck and went down there. The sherriff showed my cousin the video and asked him why he was breaking into place. He said that he knew it was my cousin. My cousin started sweating bulllets, because even he could not prove it was not him. Almost looked like a twin.

After about an hour of interrogation the Sherriff layed out an "Arrest Warrent" for my cousin. All lthis time my cousin has not payed attention to the date. The arrest warrent said, "Don't screw with mama, I will always get my revenge. April Fools"

That was one of the best. Even had the sherriffs department in on it. Gotta love her. Maybe I can come up with something good.

  21. I understand that I only had 1 Webelos crossing over, but there were at least 4-7 boys that will become eligible for OA membership in the next few months and I have been trying to alk the OA up to the leaders and get people back involved. Looks like that is something that is going to take a lot more work.

Not to mention they cancelled the Webelos weekend. When it was mentioned that we could do it the next weekend, the Chapter Advisor said that he had Camp Staff that weekend and he would not be able to be there so the event will have to be cancelled. Although there is talk about having it in the fall.

I guess that when I came into the chapter and saw how nothing was being done and thought that the youth would like to do a little more. Guess there is no changing someone who likes sitting around at meetings.

Guess scouting is not what it used to be.
