  1. I have gone through and looked at the Scout Manage also. I talked with our New CC (He is the one that took over after my cousin passed) and he said that from what he sees in the brochure he likes it. I think that we are going to try the 30 free trial. See how well that it works.

    Keep the input coming.

  2. Does anyone here use pack master to track their packs advancment. I have been looking at this for our packs use. We have been using the free trax programs using excel lbased programs. They work good but there are some limitations.

I was looking at possibly using the .net portion of packmaster so that the den leaders coud og on and input their own achievment records.

Any input on this program wouldl be appreciated.

The idea that Chachkaguy is talking actually has no youth or BSA involvment. It is saying that according to the state laws the mini gaming sites must provide a 35% donation to a charitable organization. They chose to give it to the scouts. It does not sound like the scouts were there or they were diredctly involved. Just accepting the donation.

  4. Golden Corral has a celebrity fund raiser night that units can do. It is where you basically go in and replace the wait staff. all tips are your groups. I have considered bringing this up to our pack and see what the parents think. Also it may work for the older boys scouts as they are not restricted by the local health and safety laws.

  5. In march we are having a pack campout. At which we will be crossing over our W2 to the BS troop. They will cross over saturday evening and then spend the night with the BS troop as their first troop campout.

We are looking to have some basic scout skills stations during the afternoon. What are some of the things that you think Cubs would like or could use.

Here is some of the things that we were thinking

    First Aid

    Ropes and knots

    fire building

    Cooking

What are some other things that you would suggest?

  6. I would have to talk to the parent about the BL. How can you earn something that wasn't even around. Just like I tell my Cubs parents that I cannot give the boy credit for a BL that he earned before he joined. (EX: My boy played baseball last year, before he signed up for CS, can he get the BL. I tell them no.)

But I would not argue with them, they may be just looking for some bling.

you bring up many good points. I apologize if what i said sounded like I was depending on just one act or sign. When I teach this subject to my fellow EMS professionals, I teach all the signs. All the indicators.

As for the things that are in my area, we are having a lot of MS 13 in the area, Latin Kings, Bloods and Crips. All looking at our little rural area as a good way to take a quiet area.

Would love to be able to talk off line.

As for the original subject, my comments were mostly as a, know what you are doing and where type of suggestion.

This is supposed to be a VERY LARGE EVENT. Myself and Eagle are on a planning committee for the CS portion of this event. It may even be something that your whole pack may want to attend.

As for the USS NC. We went to the Battleship alive last year. The next one is the on May 1st. Great event, we had a blast. There is even a picture of me sitting in the captains chair.

I am not saying that these boys are showing gang signs on purpose. It may be something they saw on TV and thought it was cool. I am just saying that this is something that can lead to potential BAD situations. That is why I say that it is not allowed in my pack. It is easier to put a limit on those type of things than take chances. I say this because there is evidence and proof that gang activity is increasing in my area.

I am not knocking the youth for having fun. There just needs to be a little knowledge and awareness of what they are doing.

  10. I am going to chime in on this topic, but I would like to give a little information about the education that I have sought on this topic. I work in EMS and have studied gangs and hate groups. I do this for my safety and the safety of my crew so I know when I am running into something that can be very dangerous.

Yes this may be Kids-being-kids. that is one thing. But just make sure that you know this. There have been groups of kids that have been attacked by gangs (yes street gangs) and I mean VIOLENT attacks. It was just because they did something like this and they did not know where they were. The wrong sign in the wrong place can lead to major trouble. Not that I am expecting street gangs to see it when you pose on a mountain top at sunrise, but just take that into consideration.

I would be interested in seeing these. If possible, PM me and I will get you some more reference. If I cannot figure it out I wil ask a retired gang enforcement officer that I am friends with. So I should be able to get you some information.

On a more personal note, I do not allow those type of signs and things in our pack. Just eliminates the problems. Just like I get on boys about wearing hats sideways.

I like your guidelines. I may have to go through and make some copies. We are trying to figure out the details of what we are about to do with ours.

We have a set of guidelines that my late cousin helped set up, but I am going to have to track them down.

  12. Monday morning my cousin Steve died suddenly at the age of 34. He left behind a wife, three step daughters, and two step-grand-daughters. His parents are especially upset, as would any parent.

He was not a lifetime scouter. He was in scouts as a youth, and served as an ASM for about a year 5 years ago. When I asked him to help me out with our pack two and a half years ago, he jumped in feet first and never stopped running. Not only did he take the lead as committee chairman, he led us in our first Popcorn sale, multiple fundraisers, and also became WDL. He also jumped into District service rebuilding the District Webpage, becoming Public Relations Chairman, and Serving on the district committee.

His contributions will never be forgotten.

We are thinking about naming the pack campership program after him, as he was a big supporter of no scout being left out of camping because of money. Does anyone else think that is appropriate.

  13. I never knew about google books. Looked up some of the other handbooks and found one that gives instructions on what to do about a mad dog.

It says that you have to kill the dog. In the book to wrap your arm and have the dog move in. It also says that you need to have some kind of club available. Lure in the dog and when he comes in close either kick him under the jaw or hit him with the club.

imagine what would happen if we published something like that today. Oh the lawsuits that could insue.

  14. It says on the page

"$10 surcharges for each coin sold will be paid to the National Boy Scouts of America Foundation, with funds made available in the form of grants for the extension of Scouting in hard to serve areas."

I am wondering how much more it will cost. And yes I do plan on getting my own. Maybe at least 4. I have 2.9 boys that will all be going through scouting.

They are also working on a GSUSA coin. Guess that they are still working on a design for the coin as it is still showing blank.

  15. Now Eagle, you know I would not make that statement. I simply said that the Horseback riding would be limited. They can still earn ALL other belt loops. Just they put a blanket statment at the top. I think that a simple extension of the bar on the G2SS would fix this issue.

As for the council event. Not my planning. I just plan on attending.

  16. I think that the posting of the requirements on the national website is a great thing. Especially since I had just gone out and bought the A&S requirements two years ago.

THere are some new things that they are providing and some new areas.

There are some things that they must look at. There is contradicting information. They say that in the Horseback riding BL that Tiger parents must be present in all of the activities, suggesting that tigers can earn that BL. I know that it is the generic opening line for all of the BL's.

But if you look in the G2SS it says that TIgers are not allowed to do horseback riding.

I know that this is probably just on oversight, but wanted to make all parents and leaders involved aware. I would hate for something to come back on an innocent activity.

But like I said, the list is great and will make everything very helpful.

  17. I can say that if you have acces to or enough money for these sleeping bags then you are looking at a great bag.

The layers of the bag make it a VERY good bag so that you have options from REALY REALY warn to just the Bivy sack to stay dry.

If you are going on long back[acking trips you may want to consider only taking the least amount of layers that you will need, as the whole things does carry some weight. But that is the great thing about it, you have that option.
