  1. So those of you planning on leaving if they vote to add girls to Boy scouts. What is your decision based on? I have a daughter and she has no interest in scouting of any kind but if she came to me asking me how to do something I wouldn't turn my back on her and tell her to find a female to teach it to her. I get all of the arguments on boys development, girls development this and that but maybe these girls are seeking to learn what the boys are learning and their program isn't making it happen. Maybe all male adult volunteers need to picket outside of Girl scout offices telling them to fix
  2. I was discussing the earning of Eagle by girls with others and they were open to girls being allowed to earn Eagle if they did it in Venturing, Sea Scouts, Exploring and not in Boy Scouts. So it seems they just dont want the girls in the Boy Scouts. What we do for girls from 11-13 I dont know. OA seems a non issue. Once you are 21 and meet the requirements for adult OA candidate doesn't matter if you are female or male. I am not OA so I dont know all of the rules and so many adults who are venturing leaders both male and female in the OA I guess I assumed venturing aged females could get
  3. The impression was that National is missing the point, but that girls will be a part of all ages of BSA programs. Girls want to earn the same merit badges and ranks as the boys and they want the Eagle rank. Girls dont want some different program so they can go do things outside. People can talk all they want about venturing and other coed programs. Those ranks may be harder to achieve but they do not have the same reputation as the Eagle rank. Eagle has a wiki page listing all of the famous men who have earned Eagle. There are no wiki pages dedicated to highest rank of Sea Scouts or Ve
  4. I watched the live stream from National last night about the possible change to allow girls. I listened to the discussion at our council office via the web stream and it was the same discussions that are on this thread. I also agree with an early reply in this thread with a mock timeline of when this change will happen. National has already made its decision I feel the video was more lip service than anything. Girls will be allowed in very soon. I am curious though has Girl Scouting done any studies to see how many they wiill lose to BSA when this happens.
  5. From what I can ascertain there are a bunch of double duty leaders in our district. I will ask the DC about the rules regarding Unit leader and UC.
  6. I am a Den leader but also volunteered for a Unit Commissioner position. Which patch and shoulder loops should be worn? I really don't have a budget for two fully decked out shirts. Does one supersede the other? Too bad the shoulder don't have velcro so you can switch position patches out at will. Thanks
  7. Yes I am guessing Mr. Boyce will not be traveling to Scotland anytime soon in the future. Really not sure why people are so worried about scouts in kilts when from what I can tell you can't even get them in official pants. Most photos I see posted by other scouters seems Levi, and Wrangler are the official pants supplier. So you folks scared because you think somehow kilts are going to take over just relax.

    Patches

I knew about the whole no patches on the red wool jacket thing. I am thinking of just getting a jacket elsewhere and sewing them on it.

    Patches

Howdy So I have a bunch of patches from Camporees and other camps I received when I was a Webelos, Boy Scout and Sea Scout. I would like to put them on something other than the goofy red vest. I remember when I was a young scout and would see adult leaders with patches from camporees and other event from way before my day. I thought it was neat because then you could ask him about those events and hear some neat stories. So what are my options? Thanks Sean

I don't really care if you wear a kilt or not. I have just recently become involved and when I querired about the uniform what was required was extremly lax.
  11. I love my kilts but still unsure I want to run around in 105 degree heat in 16 yards of wool wrapped around my waist.
  12. I will do all of those things. So cubs cannot go sailing? I see the usual fear of sailing still exists in Scouting. I was sailing sunfish, and optimus prams at the age of 8 no sweat. But I guess I was a minority.
  13. Yeah I guess I will have to call them. Their website only has links to Scouting.org online training.
  14. Sailing, Archery, Guns I guess the semi dangerous ones.
  15. Pardon my ignorance but how do you get certified for some activities in Cub Scouting or Scouting for that matter? Thanks Sean
  16. Going on my first camping trip with my son and his pack. they are going to a council camp. How is cub camping different than Boy Scout? Boy scouts I remember hiking in for summer camps. Monthly camping trips we had the ten ton chuck boxes to take to each patrol campsite. When we family camp we stay at State parks with water/electricity. So what am I in for? Thanks Sean
  17. I thought the rainbow symbolized God's promise to not flood the earth again? I can see boys not liking the name though. Sean
  18. A tale hmmm, I remember a scout in my troop who ate all of the burned meat out of the ashes on a mountain man program at summer camp. While in Sea Exploring our ship went to a Boy Scout Camporee. This was a huge deal since we had young ladies with us and I remember all the SM's making specific threats about anyone caught near our ship's campsite. Had one young scout who tried to put the smooth moves on one of our explorers, he said people called him "Maverick" because he looked like Tom Cruise. later she said she had to bite her tongue hard to keep from laughing out loud. We cleaned up on
  19. Howdy My son just joined Scouting and I also as a leader or wherever they stick me. I was a Webelos, Boy Scout and a Sea Explorer. Things sure have changed a lot since I was in Scouts well except for the price tag of uniforms and other items. Sean
  20. I own a kilt and both a Prince Charlie and Argyle Jackets with all the accessories. Not really sure I could wear a kilt to BSA function. While a BSA uniform is pricey its nowhere near the amount I have forked out for all of my Scottish wear.

    Knee socks

Yes I have a waist coat with my Prince Charlie jacket. Curious the mentioning of this being an American forum and knickers being an American term what did Jefferson, Washington and Franklin put on? Breeches, same design and construction?

    Knee socks

Yeah seems to be so. I will still refer to them as underwear since its what is recognized by my family and friends from the UK.
  23. Sablanck

    Knee socks

Just a few corrections but "knickers" are underwear not socks. If you were in the UK and said nice knickers to a woman you would get slapped. men wear "hose and flashes" not garters and tassels I wear kilts on occasion and hose(socks) and flashes (garter/tassel) are the correct terms. Being that Baden Powell wore a kilt on occassion I am willing to bet the hose and flashes he wore with short pants were probably the same he wore with his kilt or of the same construction.
