I made my own sleeping bag from scratch as a teen. {Scratch is a specialty fabric, in my case nylon taffeta} Full length zipper, baffles, the works. Used purchased goose down, though. After that I hacked together a set of bicycle bags. Something like these would be more than adequate to qualify a boy for sewing, I think. Better than 100 hours of meticulous labor. However, I agree that Cooking should be eagle required. And done right...PB&J verboten!

OGE, good idea. But I see it as a revamp of Pioneering MB. The idea should get some serious attention. Personally, and unless people are cheating, I see Env. Sci. as too hard and in need of some modification. Oops, forgot the original question. I would suggest Orienteering as a substitute. There is a hefty knowledge/skill level required as well as a physical requirement that he should be able to do on a golf course or similar terrain. As Bob Dole would say, "down, boy!" Merlyn's motives are not relevant as far as I'm concerned. If our ideas can stand critical scrutiny, they are stronger for it. If we avoid or reject such scrutiny, then we can't really know the strength of those ideas. And if some of our ideas are weak, critical examination is the best way to detect and then avoid or reject them.(This message has been edited by packsaddle)

I have enjoyed these responses. It seems that for our troop, getting to sleep quickly correlates to how well fed they are and even better if fed later. I think good food goes a long way toward solving most problems. My biggest problem is the other leaders. Last outing the one with the sleep apnia machine was making Darth Vader sounds and the other one was sawing redwoods. Sheesh!

OK, that's good. Do we list the non-scouts on the tour permit? The reason I ask is that sometimes we need the church youth that are not in Boy Scouts in order to attain critical mass for certain outings (where a group rate, for example, requires a minimum number). The non-scouts are mostly girls.

Ed, I was tired and we were in the midst of a 20-minute prayer...I began staring at the ceiling high above. A wasp sat on a distant beam. Just as I was about to doze, it flew down and stung me on the nose. Merlyn is kind of like that. At the moment, I didn't much enjoy it but in retrospect, I can appreciate the event. Even if his motives are as you say, I would rather have them aired for examination than push him into the corner. I think it makes all of us better. And remember his alter ego, Zorn, or whoever, at least Merlyn seems sincere.

10-4 on the info, dsteele. I am just a hack (not hacker) with computers and I am amazed at how much of our personal info is freely available out there. Five minutes of looking will be a sobering experience. I'll continue to delude myself with anonymity.
