  1. ...in that case Yes, yank his Firem'n Chit or all fire making rights now because it becomes a safety issue for both the boy and the rest of the troop.
  2. Echoing shortridge's thoughts... What is the extent of this problem... Is he in violation of what he agree to earning his Firem'n Chit (if so take it away) From the Fire'n Chit 1. I have read, understand and use fire safety rules from the Boy Scout Handbook. 2. I will build a campfire only when necessary and when I have the necessary permits (regulations vary by locality). 3. I will minimize campfire impacts or use existing fire lays consistent with the principles of Leave No Trace. I will check to see that all flammable material is cleared at least 5 feet in a

  9. I believe there is a middle ground here between the two so my vote is... Business casual
  10. I like SSScout's idea! How about some type of task to fill a bucket by building a pipeline (no glue) from hose to bucket using the parts from Home Depot. Low pressure on the hose and the task has to happen while the water is on. Now not all the parts are going to fit together and some might leak (small holes drilled in them).
  11. Ok...that was weird That last post was was sent on the 3rd, I realized I had forgotten the word looking, and rewrote the post. Now the original post shows up on the 4th.(This message has been edited by oldisnewagain1)
  12. Just picked up two more "Grease Pot"s at KMART and both were aluminium. Are you sure TAHAWK you were at right ones?
  13. The "Grease Pot" is a black (on the outside ) aluminium container with the word "Grease" embossed into the lid. The name Kmart gives it is "Grease Strainer" and the label has this part number 0-40734012-4.(This message has been edited by oldisnewagain1)
  14. SSScout, one thing you might try for a light weight pot is "the grease pot" from Kmart. A friend that hikes the AT often recommend it and I have to say it is a reasonable alternative for around 6 bucks.. I also also seen some large aluminum can pots used (modified fosters, Heineken empties) but I not so sure if you would do anything beyond boiling water in them.
  15. Unofficially, there was always Snoopy. http://www.examiner.com/history-landmarks-travel-in-national/take-a-hike-snoopy-the-beagle-scout-and-100-years-of-boy-scouts
  16. Hmmmmmm.... perhaps funnel should be replaced with a pipe with a wide, often conical mouth and a narrow stem used to channel liquid or fine-grained substances into containers with a small opening as in "Always use a pipe with a wide, often conical mouth and a narrow stem used to channel liquid or fine-grained substances into containers with a small opening to refuel a stove so you wont frost- bite your fingers by accidentally pouring fuel on them. again?" ;D Well folks, thanks for all the responses...
  17. OK, I know I am opening a can of worms here (with an OSHA approved can opener), but is the BSA regulating the fun out of Scouting?
  18. Not in recent memory has our troop had a bugler (or someone who played trumpet) however... A new scout has approached the SPL asking if he could be bugler next year
  19. >You all call yourself Scouters but NO ONE has reported that their first car was a Pinewood Derby car!< Oddly enough... The pack I was in didn't do pinewood derby until a few years after my crossover to the troop(This message has been edited by oldisnewagain1)
  20. While I don't advocate electronics on a campout... Google sky app
  21. If I understand you correctly, if a troop mandates, as one troop in our town does, the Scout uniform is long scout pants, short sleeve shirt, scout socks, and black shoes this is the official uniform? Would I also be out of uniform in long sleeve scout shirt, scout shorts, scout knee socks and hiking boots? Since this troops also mandates 7 different "class B" shirts, am I out of uniform if I wore the wrong color that day?
  22. Perhaps it is my age that plays tricks on this old mind but I wonder, can we really judge a Scout by the way one wears the uniform? Does my centennial uniform hold more weight that the one I wore with Red applets. If I chose to wear the forest green with and red beret of the Leadership Corps will I be a social outcast? What if I wore the uniform worn by an American Scout of 1910? Would that be acceptable considering there wasnt an official uniform until 1913? (There was a uniform available in the 1911 first Supply Department catalog but there was no mention of the official status by
  23. That's an easy one... it's a northern snow chupacabra (This message has been edited by oldisnewagain1)
  24. First off congratulations on 20 years! Secondly, congratulations on having a wife that is so supportive of Scouting! Thirdly, Do you think she could convince my wife (just kidding) But as to something special Boy Scout style, how about asking your PLC if they would consider doing something special for you both. I think they could surprise you with their resourcefulness. Now, that doesn't a excuse you for having something special planned also...
  25. How big is our council? It depends on your point of view... If you on the outside looking in, we are a small council. If you are on the inside, it is too bleeping big... The problem for me is all meetings (except at a district level)are held in the eastern most part of the council. For some districts, the travel time is not an issue (under 1/2 hour) but for the western most district the travel time is greatly increased. As a result, there is very little participation from Scouters in the council from that district. The upside (and downside) is this district is learning to f
