  1. "if the YP Quiz doesn't count, then why have it available at all?" I wouldn't be surprised to see it disappear.
  2. I am privy to some inside info. To clear up a few things: 1) Tiger Parents are NOT required to take YP since they don't fill out an adult application. 2) MB Counselors ARE required since they fill out an adult app. 3) The YP Quiz is NOT a fulfillment of the requirement. Even if you have taken YP before, you must retake the entire course in case there are any updates. When you submit a new leader application, you'll need the application, the signature page with the background info check disclaimer signed, the fee and the YP certification.
  3. Don't forget about the Astronomy Belt Loop. Ultimate can become "Flying Saucers." There is a Space version of "If I were not a Cub Scout." There is also the song, "R2D2,R2D2, C3PO, C3PO, Obi Wan Kenobi, Obi Wan Kenobi, Hans Solo, Hans Solo." (To the tune of "Are you Sleeping")
  4. Our Council doesn't. I volunteer at the Scout Service Center and one of the things I do is enter advancements. All we require is rank badges, Webelos pins and extra awards like Conservation, Outdoor Activity etc. There is no code for belt loops in the software that the BSA uses to record advancement, at least as far as our Council is concerned. I thought the software was universal. If so, your Council must want it for their own record keeping.
  5. Greetings ScoutBox! I was in Switzerland in June. What a great place for Scout hikes!
  6. We give a coupon good for 1/2 off Cub Day Camp or Webelos Adventure Camp. Non-transferable and it must be used for the current year's camp.
  7. I always have an Eagle Scout come in and do the Whittlin' Chip requirements with the Bears. The boys are in awe that an Eagle Scout would come and they listen to every word.
  8. You don't ask dumb questions. One can't know everything, even those of us who have been around Scouting for awhile. I have been doing Cub Scouts for 14 years and had to ask a fellow scouter about the rules they used for their Father/Son cake bake. Our Pack has never done one (which IS dumb, but Packs get in ruts and forget to do things.) Ask away.
  9. In my experience, most of my Scouts have enjoyed Space, Electricity, Aircraft (especially building a model airplane),Art(they love playing with clay), Nature Crafts (loved the bird caller)and Maps. You can't go wrong with Space. I haven't had a Scout yet who hasn't loved building a model rocket.
  10. Welcome! I also agree that you should take BALOO and plan a Pack camping trip. You could make one of the activities a Nature hike to get the boys used to the idea of hiking. By the time your son is a Webelos, a 3 mile hike is one of the options for his Outdoorsman Pin. If you haven't seen this chart, here is the age-appropriate guidelines for Scouting. http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/ageguides.pdf It comes in handy.
  11. Our Pack dressed as S'mores one year and won first place. The Tigers dressed in white and we stuffed them and put a scanned and enlarged Named brand Marshmallow label on them. The Wolves were graham crackers --just cardboard made to look like a graham cracker sandwich board. The Bears were the Chocolate bars --again, a named brand spray painted on card board with stencils. The leaders carried flashlights with tissue paper flames and when we got in front of the judges, we made a "campfire" and the kids made themselves into S'mores. We had a sign that said "Cub Scouts have S'more fun."
  12. Alas, no. I've never seen one done in a Dutch oven.Around here, they have to be deep fried to be authentic. Have you tried putting your pizza filling into an eggy dough (like crescent rolls) and putting them in a dutch oven? Prepackaged pizza dough might work.
  13. This is my first post here. I have read a few topics and found that the Scouters here are very helpful. I hope I can be the same. I have been the Cubmaster of our local Pack for 10 years (not consecutive.)I should retire from that, but enjoy it too much. I have been a den leader for all the ranks, but mostly Wolves and Bears.I am also CS Roundtable Commissioner for our District. I was the Program Director for Day Camp for 10 years. I also volunteer at our satellite Scout store/office, where I do everything from selling merit badges to approving tour permits. I am also a MB Counselor. Both
