  1. Good discussion.

I view both political parties as a bunch of opportunists. In my research I'm on the Doctors side. The AMA has some excellent, clinical information about the various proposals and amendments to HR 3200.

Go to the AMA site to get information about who is proposing what. http://www.ama-assn.org/

BTW...BOTH sides want a change to the health care industry. Its clearly evident from the proposals many Republicans have given.

    Status quo is unacceptable.

  2. Brent,

Give me a little credit. I heard the first part of his program on WJR then looked at his web site last evening. You can read the transcript. Talking points?the left isnt that sophisticated.

My rant comes from the heart. All my immediate family involved in the medical profession.

Rush is a political porn star. His ability to shock and twist fact is unrivaled. His ability to draw an audience to his advertisers is amazing. Akin to a crowd around a car wreck or house fire. And just like porn, I find his tripe offers little redeeming social value.

  3. There are many Venture Crews in the Medical field..this is is on topic. A rant..Yes, but deserved.

Today, Rush Limbaugh compared the medical symbol "Caducus" (two serpents in the form of a double helix, surmounted by wings) to the Nazi "Hoheitszeichen". Limbaughs comparison, currently posted on his web site, should offend every Doctor, Nurse, Pharmacist and health care provider.

My Grandfather, Dr. Warren Hinshaw was a flight surgeon with the 8th Army Air Corp stationed in England. He was witness to the horror of the Nazi 3rd Reich and served for over six years as a medical doctor treating American WWII wounded. Both my parents are Pharmacists with over 70 years together serving in the health care field.

Once again the leader of the Conservative right shows his ignorance and offends each and every first responder and health care professional in this country.

Its so sad that I have to even think of this condescending, addle minded entertainer as a fellow American citizen.

  4. Here is a response from from a Northern Tier Guide.

I would put an experienced with an inexperienced, this way the experienced can A-Steer and have the newb power or B-depending on how many are in the canoe possibly duff and explain how to steer and give some hands on instruction

I would not put newbs with newbs, if they don't understand what they are doing they are often slow, tippy, "mile hogs... Read More" (in otherwords they are adding miles because the cant stay straight and thus zig-zag) and get tired more quickly because they are exerting the same amount of energy to get half the result (because of the lack of experience)

When it comes to being able to canoe well the front person needs to have a good technique and power. The Rear person needs to know how to steer, just keep the boat straight WITHOUT RUDDER (rudder is not steering). When it pairing people up, however, it is better to have someone who is experienced in steering as opposed to the power. You may go slower but you'll go straight, which in the long run means faster.

  5. elbel86,

I signed it. #90. I'm no hand wringing wimp. I work for a US based Auto manufacturing company that puts bread on my familys table each night. (And just took money from every US taxpayer) If we dont start producing (making stuff) then our way of life will forever be changed. Keep buying foreign. You, your kids, and your kids kids will be out of a job and looking to move out of the US to find work. Mark my words.

The real slogan should be Buy Local

    Thanks for the opportunity.

    A U.S. Auto Worker.

  6. I saw several people in Ely wearing Mukluks. Are they made locally in Northern Minn? My son is a Guide this summer and alternates between a paddler shoe and an above the ankle hiker in which he modified. To be honest his biggest struggle was rain gear. What he had brought up was unsuitable. He went in to Ely and picked up a full rain suite for paddling.

  7. nldscout,

Ive been witness to Charter Captains here on the Great Lakes who would rather have you hit the dock rather then their deck when it comes to showing some respect and humility about thinking that you know their business. Guides work long hours, weekends and holidays and it can be intense work. If Waynes PM came off as a little rough Im sure its cause hes seen a lot of second guessers. Hopefully some of them survived.

  8. If a professional outdoor guide advises me about a danger, I would consider it absolute reckless negligence not to heed this good advice. Rather then question the credentials why isnt this forum wringing every bit of wisdom and advice out of this valuable resource.

There are way, way too many Scouters who think of themselves as some kind of Daniel Boone. The reality is that a vast majority of Scouters are weekend outdoor enthusiasts. Jeez Ive been around a bit and until this forum I never even heard of the word hydrolic. Wayne, thanks for the information and please chime in from time to time with advice and observations

  9. SMT224,

I commend you for your service as a Scoutmaster.

While the incident with this kid is unfortunate it points out that not everyone is of the mindset required to be a successful Scout. In this case its the mindset of the parent. My wife is an elementary school principle who deals with the woop, woop, woop of parents on a daily basis. Out of several hundred students its only a handful that consume the most of her time. I suppose the same ratio could be applied in any troop.

  10. Banning cell phones is only one of dozens of items that these boys see banned from their access. Is the BSA following the same path as our public schools? Here is a short list I found of other typically banned items.

    Calculators

    Student backpacks

Books - Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, American Heritage Dictionary, Snow White, Harry Potter, Judy Blume

    Black Lipstick

    Pogs

    Trading Cards

Black, white, and red clothing. Incidentally, these colors are the same ones worn by the Chicago Bulls. The ban includes the new red/black versions of Air Jordans.

    Sagging trousers

    Pictures of Jesus

    Halloween parties

    Ties

    Fathers Day Cards

    Hugging

    Birthday cakes

    Soft Drinks

Not one of these banned items is a health and safety items.
