As per my last post, Last weekend in Minerva, Ohio, 10 miles from our main camp, the Minerva PD had to put a stop to the Minerva Homecoming events as soon as the fireworks ended due to a two year old 200 LB male black bear. He was last seen heading east from Carroll County into Columbiana County. Guess where the camp is at, right on the county line. This has been one of 8 bear spottings within 20 miles of the camp in the last three weeks. I think there will be some discussion with the camp director later this morning about any precautions that are being taken, if any.

We're heading out in about a month. Since we camp in Outpost, on the other side of the lake from camp, some was smart and bought the troop a propane heated shower unit. It's about a 3/4 mile hike to the nearest showerhouse. Nice thing is we know when they use it and when they don't. It's a bear regulating the heat on the thing, to little water its too hot, to much, it's cold. Also we remind everyone to turn on the flow of water before firing up the thing, otherwise you hear a lot of screaming from the surprised showeree when the hose coupling blows from the pressure buildup. Buckeye Council's 7 Ranges Scout Reservation Pipestone Camp Honors Program, 81 years strong and still going. Can't say how many Scouts/Scouters come through each week (at least 300-400). According to the camp director, outside of National's main high adventure reservations, we draw the next largest crowds nationally from 20-25 different states, Canada and Europe, just so they can earn their Pipestones.

What required training does your Troop or Council mandate for leaders, before they are considered worthy of leading youth into the backcountry on treks and adventures? How many require WFA, WFR or higher? How many Councils sponsor WFA or WFR classes? If so, does your Council mandate specific equipment for the trek? How about Swift Water Operations and Rescue training for river trips? Is Leave No Trace training required? AED's are popping up in discussions on Scouts-L. Just found this thread. The cost shouldn't be a factor. There is plenty of grant money out there tagged to assist with the purchase of AED's. Some Councils have the foresight to buy several and have them placed at strategic locations at their camps, mainly are the program areas. By pulling him out of an area where he feels comfortable and that he fits, and put him with scouts that are 2 or 3 years ahead of him developmentally and psychologically, could be disastrous for his psyche. It is truely a shame that they didn't just add symbols of the other main religions to the Chapel, The Star of David, The Crescent and others. Lisa, That was my first river canoe trip 37 years back as a Webelos. At least back then it was allowed. I haven't been down there for a few years, but there are several liveries in the area with any combination of trips from 4 miles on up, all the way to New Orleans.
