  1. Greeting scouters from the Spoon River VAlley Young Marines of GAlesburg, Illinois. You are invited to participate in a Land Navigation foot race we will be holding July 17, 2010, at the ARGYLE LAKE STATE PARK, Colchester, Illinois 0900 The DEVILDOG CHALLENGE is a inter-youth group contest our Young Marines use as a way of testing their ability to navigate with a compass and map over a challenging terrain against other organizations that learn these same skills. It is an orienteering foot race testing endurance, navigation skills, teamwork, and adaptability. We would lik
  2. Dear fellow scouters, This will be my last entry on this forum. Thank you for all the interesting debates and conversations, they were illuminating. My former ASM is an inactive United States Marine. He and I researched the Young Marines, did a lot of soul searching (He didnt have to do any hand-wringing over this- he thought the scouters and units in our area were all pretty lame), and we have decided to form a Young Marine unit and not re-charter the scout and cub units we currently run. We are working with our Battalion commander getting trained and our paper-work in order. We ha
  3. If I could ask Pope Leo XIII (1878-1903) what he meant by demons, I would. "Saint Michael, Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And you, Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into Hell Satan and the other evil spirits who prowl the world for the ruin of souls. Amen." I beleive you will indeed know people by their fruits. The fruits of public schools is rather apparent to me. And the more people consciously or otherwise try and deprive boys and girls of proper civic and sp
  4. If people act like demons-then demonizing them is just good journalism. It is demonic to fight organizations like BSA for their policies. That is my point of view. And an ill-informed demon is just as dangerous as a rather intentionally evil one. Pappy
  5. This probably points to another reason why we home school our children. To us, public school, and most parochial schools for that matter, are a form of day-orphanages with a socialist authority and mandate. You are quite right I suppose. It is impossible to mix them since they are at cross purposes. Pappy
  6. The letter of the law was violated by the woman it seems. The spirit of neighborliness was suborned by the neighbor who reported her. If you are comparing his vindictiveness or her lawlessness with any of my positions I am all ears. I understand the equality argument posed by the other posters, and I empathize, - but I think that a community can deicide that scouting is super-essential and traditional and an attachment to the school mission, like sports, and brownies. I think the school board ought to let groups of children with permission from their parents to hear presentations from vi
  7. I don't see it that way. But it is probably my vision problem. Pappy
  8. This is a correspondace and a reflection memo on how to improve Pine Wood and other Scouter events to increase outreach and to improve over-all quality for parents, scouts, and the potential for recruitment and retention form scout events. I thought this to be an interesting process. Hi ******, I used your thoughts as an opportunity to expand on some of the concerns you expressed as well as some of the ideas I have been having about what we could do to improve the experiences for ourboys and to generate more excitement for scouting in general. I have responded to your thoughts in
  9. SSS Scout. Prejudice is in the eye of the beholder. Scouting has been in the schools in Galesburg and has been allowed to be actively promoted in the schools in Galesburg for seventy plus years. So we have a little precedent on or side. Also- I would argue that sports leagues and the other things that you mention do not have the unique complementary qualities that scouting has towards education and rounding the American boy. (Until of late- when the multi-cultural agenda did what the communists of the thirties and forties couldnt do, and finally achieve a seemingly insurmountable beach-he
  10. Merlyn and his merry band of God-less fellow travelers, Greetings and salutations from the front lines! If atheists wanted to have a atheists scout group, they would be allowed to meet at the school. But parents probably wouldn't put their child into a group of atheists scouts. But Scouting does not actively promote a specific religious point of view except that God is referred to as God, and that reverence to this God and giving thanks is important. Im sure the name God can be inter-changed with Allah in an Islamic scouting group. I want the Galesburg Public schools to fight u
  11. There has been no discrimination done by BSA in Knox County when it comes to Cub Scouts. Cub Scouts are not trying go to sneak a religion into the schools. And the schools know this. They are offensive, and must be fought. Your point of view I find equally offensive. But I have noticed the glee you take in seeing Cub Scouting opportunities denied to children, so I don't have to pretend to understand your intentions. They are pretty well stated. The Cub Scouts in Galesburg are being pushed out of the public schools. They are increasingly being embraced by Church organizations. I am o
  12. Merlyn, The School Board can say that they have never observed any Cub Scout representative or Cub Scout Pack ever demonstrating any discrimination based on religion, and or any promotion of a particular religious point of view. That would be very honest since the Cub Scout packs in Galesburg have traditionally been very secular in their outlook and have pretty much articulated the culture of the school they were based in. That goes for the folks at District and Council as well. They stay clear of mentions of God or faith in their promotional materials and activities. The school boar
  13. That is ridiculous and you know it. I could easily say that consciously ignoring God in all discussions of science and history is equally theological an outlook. Probably more so. Pappy
  14. (This is letter recently sent to local papers. THis is a very troubling issue for our District. Cub Scouting enrollment is plummeting, and this will affect BS recruitment efforts -as the Webelos population contnues to decrease.) Dear Editor, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts is a dying institution in our neck of the woods, and it certainly hasnt been helped out by a school board who is so loath to scouting as to lump them in with Jehovah Witnesses and Evangelical Christians as another irritating and unwelcome proselytizing group. The cynical and mean spirited antics of the CUSD 2
  15. A very timely post for me. I just got back from training this weekend. It was very enlightening. The trainers were Scoutmasters from a new local troop. They were very young, positive, and helpful (And they were in good shape too- all mountain climbers with a climbing themed troop!). The training videos were helpful as well- though the black Scoutmaster was a way better actor than the white scoutmaster. I immediately got on the horn with nearly all my scout parents and told them abou the changes to the unit. I am getting my committees lined up and have asked my parents to consider being AS
  16. Spiney- Cryptic - are those quotes for the edification of all of us or a select few? - I would be careful of the soldiers you stand on. Cesar didn't write that quote- it is a fake - unless you know the document he wrote it in. But Cesar did in fact say - "When the swords flash let no idea of love, piety, or even the face of your fathers move you." "Never insult anyone by accident."---Robert A. Heinlein "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." George Orwell And two juicy Madison quotes to
  17. The Boy Scouts are one of the bulwarks of our American Democracy (if one holds that a Democracys strength is dependent on the strength of the character of its voting populous) - and the ACLU is a creation of American Communists- Pappy From "ACLU fulfilling communist agenda" 2008 WorldNetDaily.com The ACLU was founded in the 1920s by Roger Baldwin and Crystal Eastman, described as a "progressive" and "the perfect feminist." Earl Browder was general secretary of the Communist Party of the United States from 1930 through its dissolution in 1944. When the party was re
  18. I was part of a youth canoe trip down the Kickapoo River in Wisconsin in 1976.(Not Scouting) A boy drowned and it really devastated the Adult in charge of the trip. He was a very popular gym teacher. He checked himself into the hospital for a nervous break down. He was never the same after that. That expereince still remains fresh in my mind as a useful reminder of how quickly a youth outing can turn into disaster. THe boy who drowned didn't know how to swim- and he did not wear his life jacket out of embarassment. (We were unsupervided when we decided to go into the river an
  19. This was inspired by the 100 anniversary logo thread. Whether it is a WPA-like poster, and Rockwell painting, a genre painting or sketch portraying scouts, a commercial from the seventies- what was the most powerful image you ever experienced about scouting? Why do you think this image had an effect on you? Do you think BSA is utilizing the power of images to promote its message to youth in its current media output? (Handbooks and other literature, DVDs (In the Scout Zone) etcetera). And lastly- would it be unethical to stage photo-shoots with models that may or may not be
  20. Good point- I meant an antique looking scout axe and or tomamhawk, and a new high tech deveice. Sorry my point was lost in my poor choice of wording. I don't take back my initial critique of the "logo". It is a bore- only to be enjoyed by the boring. When I look at it- I am reminded only that 100 years has not been very good to BSA if that is the best it can do. The stuff from the teens and depression era was loads better than that thing. I really could care less that a scout helped a professional graphic artist create it. (That is exactly waht it looks like). I would ha
  21. Forgive my perceived harshness- I must be one of those cyber-socio-paths who can't read computer human facial gesture icons. Acco40- I will assume your intentions were good - even if your use of smiley faces is selective. I still think morals aren't so complex when it comes to kids. Golden rule- adherence to the scout laws. Pappy
  22. Acco40, It's funny how you are contemplating morally straight- yet you are so by the numbers on uniforming practices of scouting. I think you ought to get your head around morally straight before you go telling people that they ought not call themselves BSA if they aren't wearing their uniforms right. What are more important- an untucked mensch, or a spit and polished sadist? What part of morally straight do you and scoutmomma find so perplexing anyways? Stealing? Lying? Cruelty? Perversion? The Ten Commandments? The Beatitudes? Please let me know why this part of the scout law
  23. Hello acco40, long time no argue, You wrote-- "3) If you want to make up your own rules about uniforming, go ahead. Just don't advertise your program as the BSA program." Says who? What about the troops and packs who are pretty cavalier about not abiding by the uniform rules? SHould they tell people that they are not a BSA program? JEans wearing scout leaders are not to advertise that they are affiliated with BSA? Untucked shirts with no neckers or belts or hats - Not BSA? We let everyone know that we ARE an idiosycratic BSA unit. All the parents know that Cub Scouts at oth
  24. Your wife is wrong. It is cool. But so is TR and the rough riders. I was thinking about investigating a wider brimmed hat for myself The ones from ARMYBARRACKS.COM have the smaller brim. But they are pretty good at 30 bucks. I have one kid in my troop, a Philipino boy- who is a dead wringer for the Asian kid in Follow Me Boys. His hat even bends the same way as his. I am of the Follow me Boys school of thought about the proper care and maintenance of the campaign hat - Don't- the bends and folds reflect the personality of the scout just fine! My District exec told me I ought to have
  25. I am going to try the leash-lengthening method at first. (My scouts are super young 11-14). On official scouting Patrol outings, I'll be stationed with my ASM a distance away and rendeveous with the patrol at some time. I won't be so far as not to be able to reach them in a hurry, and we'll have cell phone contact. Also- I thought is best to always have them know exactly where they are on a map so I can reach them. (My ASM wants them to have gps's too- I'm an old compass guy). Our first Patrol only outing is this Spring - I'll report back... Pappy
