  1. Eagle732, why are you so resistant to the additional training? As others have stated, the course covers more than "don't use a tournequet for a head wound," it covers how to make do with what you have when you're miles from anywhere.

  3. Since there are no uniform police, you are really free to do whatever you want to do. It's up to your conscience.. As someone else pointed out, BSA uniform rules don't permit Cub Scouts to wear unofficial neckers or caps. You could also buy blue mock turtlenecks to be worn under the shirts, even have the necks embroidered "Pack 996." Yet another option would be fleece jackets with indentifiying embroidery. For the record, there is no such thing in BSA as a "Class A" or "Class B" uniform.
  4. Try Ebay. Collectibles > Historical Memorabilia > Fraternal Groups > Boy Scouts(This message has been edited by Gold Winger)
  5. " Practical examples too like recovering an unconscious diabetic with a honey bear enema." I don't like the sound of this. How's that work and will I be glad that I'm out when it happens? " and an MD trumps all." Maybe by rule but . . . Years ago, I was chatting with my endocrinologist and somehow the conversation turned around to this. He said that if he was around an accident and someone needed help, he'd step up but if there was an EMT available, he'd step aside because they have more relevant training and more experience dealing with things like head injuries and severe bleeding. Then again, maybe he was just being modest.
  6. "Nah, see if you can catch anyone wearing their knots upside down. " Oh, I see those every week. For me, they're as easy as spotting a position patch on the wrong sleeve. :-)
  7. I'm not comfortable in anything soaking wet. That includes nothing. Get me wet and I'm miserable.
  8. I know a fellow who is a PA and an EMT who went through Wilderness First Aid a couple years back. I wondered if they had taught him anything new. He explained that the course wasn't so much how to deal with injuries but how to deal with them in the wilderness. It's one thing to deal with a broken ankle when you have a well stocked ER or big truck filled with gear but another when you're four hours from the nearest help. That's what he told me. Maybe it varies from course to course.
  9. "Parents that will think they have done their job by giving the book and going back to their self centered lives "As a kid my parents didn't teach me half the stuff in the book, I learned it from FRIENDS." Exactly! So why should the parents do these things with their kids. Let the kids explore and make mistakes on their own. A friend and I built a working (almost reliably) telegraph in the 6th grade. No parental involvement. Tried building a go-kart in the 8th grade but couldn't get the engine to run but we had fun. No parental involvement. Dug caves. Built forts. Designed a submarine (too expensive to build). No parental involvement. KIds can learn and have fun without continuous parental involvement.
  10. I didn't realize that this was Bob's thread. Must have missed that memo. Let's see. Beaver, Pappy preaching, Bob being pedantic, moxie, wingnut, Oak Tree, Bob being pedantic again, Scout Nut, then me. Ah, I can see why you thought it was Bob's thread. He answered twice.
  11. You can do it but it will be tight. You'll really need the support of your troop committee to get your Board of Review on the earliest possible date so you will have the maximum amount of time. You'll also need to bust your butt (can I say butt?) to get all of those merit badge done in time. Some require three months apiece but there's no reason that you can't be working on them together. Good luck.
  12. Why would you think that I'm not talking about my religious practices. For you to assume that you violate the oath that you hold so dear. Shame on you.
  13. Cracker Barrel isn't a meal It's horse doovers the Boy Scout way. Crackers, beef stick, cheese, popcorn, hot chocolate, coffee, cider, even watercress sandwiches. Basically, whatever sort of snacks you'd like to have. The idea is to get people together to socialize a bit.
  14. Hey Bob! You do your thing and I'll do mine. Roasted ram is pretty yummy.
  15. We always take a ram with us, build an altar out of local stone and sacrifice the ram on our newly built altar. We then roast the ram and eat it in a feast. Following leave not trace, we dismantle the altar and put the rocks back where we found them.
  16. "Gold Winger, a game isn't a bad analogy, but I think the game analogy breaks down in that games have referees. If you pick up the ball and run with it, they blow their whistle and stop you. BSA pretty explicitly doesn't have any referees." I view the Scoutmasters as coaches and the committee as referees. Unfortunately, in this game, too many of the refs don't know and don't care about the rules because they have kids in the game.
  17. Rules of the road? I think we all ignore them from time to time. I'd say that the closest analogy is the game. If you decided to form a soccer team but decide that your goalie can't use his hands, you're handicapped when playing other teams but that's all because there's no rule requiring the hands to be used. However, if you decide that your players can pick up the ball and run with it, you're not even playing soccer any more even if you claim that you are.
  18. "Im all for Orthodoxy when it comes to my faith" I'm very glad that you've seen the light and are converting.
  19. " I'm pretty sure the Pope had nothing to do with UTC" You're right. That could be Charles II, Victoria or the French.
  20. "do you know where you were on June 12, 1967, and how to contact da witnesses to confirm that?" I was 8, we were driving from Arizona to Pennsylvania. My brother was in the back seat with me and will testify to that.
  21. I don't know how successful this would be but I've noticed that the Marines seem to attract many Latinos. Call the local Marine baracks and ask if they have any Latino Marines who were Boy Scouts, especially Eagles. Invite those Marines to accompany you on your recruiting efforts in the Hispanic community. It would also be nice to offer to feed them. :-)
  22. "Goldwing writes: A Scout unit cannot exist without an SM and a committee. Right?" Bob said," Wrong actually, apparently you are unaware of the Lone Scout program." Last time that I checked, a Lone Scout is just that. A Lone Scout and not a unit. Even then, it is hard to avoid associating with an adult. Since you seem confused about the program, I offer the following from BSA's web site: "Every boy registering as a Lone Scout must have an adult, 21 years or older, who meets adult membership requirements and agrees to serve as the boy's Lone Scout friend and counselor."
