  1. The definitition of month is a little squierly. Some make it to the same day in each month. Our council's position is that all months have 30 days in them. Realisticly the BOR will be on the same night of the week at a troop meeting. That means a minimum of 13 weeks or 91 days. Why would any unit make their scouts wait 3 months for a BOR? Please note that the AGP&P tells the district to stress to the units the importance of monthly boards of review.
  2. While not a big fan of the food drive for an Eagle Project, I wouldn't rule it out. One of the last EBOR I sat on had a scout who did a clothing drive. A collection drive does not have to be trivial. By extending it to include multiple organizations, over a longer period of time, with ambitious but obtainable goals and then distribute the items to those in need and not just an agency they can demonstrate the leadership required. More than what is involved in reconstructing a trail. As for the no routine labor restriction. This one has bothered my for some time. Can anyone really claim tha
  3. The packs I've been involved with set aside the scout's popcorn earning during his last year to take with him when he crossed over. If he did not cross over then the money went to the pack general fund. This required that the amounts for each scout be recorded. If there is no record this would be difficult to do. Although, a committee could decide to transfer a set amount to the troops for the scouts that cross over. It can be a big help for a new scout. Not only will they have expenses involving uniforms, dues but will likely get hit with "Your son should plan on going to summer camp, we need
  4. Yes. We have them and I print each month's for the PLC to use. I'd just like to find out from others how to be successful at using them.
  5. Does anyone really use these? We go with the themes and get some ideas for them but don't really use them. I think they would make the meetings much more interesting but just haven't been able to get the PLC to make use of them. Part is likely a lack of understanding, part is getting people to do things a new way, part is that the scouts perceive it as being more work (compared to inviting a guest speaker and playing basketball it is). I'd like to take the PLC to visit a troop that does a good job of implementing them, but I don't know of any.
  6. What is the purpose of your patrols and how does integrating the new scouts into them further that purpose? What are you wanting to accomplish? Are these new scouts coming from the same pack? How many different dens are they from? Basically you have three options: Have two NSPS with a TG in each and combine the remaining 8 scouts. You have ruled this one out. Have one NSP with a TG and integrate the remaining new scouts into the existing patrols. This might work if most of your new scouts are coming from a single den or pack with a few other scouts from other units. Break up the
  7. From the ACP&P, pp, 28-29" Scouts who have completed all requirements for a rank prior to their 18th birthday should submit their application and be reviewed and recognized within three months after that date. Boards of review conducted between three and six months after the candidates 18th birthday must be pre-approved by the local council. A statement by an adult explaining the reason for the delay must be attached to the Eagle Scout Rank Application when it is submitted to the Eagle Scout Service. If an Eagle Scout board of review will be held after the six months following the can
  8. Try this, the scout turns 18 while waiting for the EBOR and gets a no vote, which is frequently the case, at 18 he can't participat as a scout and may not be able to complete the actions/requirements. What do we do? Is his only option an Appeal? The scout can either request an extension (see p. 25 of the ACP&P) or appeal the board's decision.
  9. If the candidate does not meet the requirements, he is asked to return and told the reasons for his failure to qualify. A discussion should be held with him as to how he may meet the requirements within a given period. Should the applicant disagree with the decision, the appeal procedures should be explained to him. A follow-up letter must be sent to the Scout confirming the agreements reached on the action(s) necessary for the advancement. If the Scout chooses to appeal, provide the name and address of the person he is to contact. You asked: Does this follow with a new Board of Review
  10. I did have to draw a line at Blood Reign. The number of possible cheers with double entendres for the Beaver patrol is nearly limitless. Not just the name itself, but tail, dam and wood also come into play. I'm betting a very amusing song could be made from The Happy Wanderer: "I love to go a beavering..."
  11. Hand axes are simply a subset of all axes. The only difference in the use of a hand axe and any other axe is the number of hands you use to hold it and the way it is swung. If you are teaching how to properly use an axe it will include the proper use of the hand axe. For most uses in a scout environment the hand axe is more likely the proper and safer tool to use. The scouts are using it to make kindling or a quick stake. There are very few occasions that a scout needs a full length axe. In general they are not felling or limbing trees. But if you ban hand axes, the scout will use a full
  12. Most finish lines I've seen are simple electric eyes. Just having a shiny car would not affect it. Possibly the lights were out of line, but that is also unlikely. There could have been a circuit issue. In any case if it seemed to only affect this car then it is likely there was no actual problem and you should have let it win. If you judged that car different from any other car then you should go back and appologize to the boy. I am a purist. I believe that any rule beyond those that come in the box are bogus. There is no rule that the scout must use the wood block that came with the
  13. I used to be a Beaver... I am sooo glad I'm not a Bear... Eagles (and Bobwhites) taste like chicken.

    Uniform hat

To the second, if you are in uniform with the uniform hat (not some other hat) when you salute the flag with the hat on using the Scout Salute. If you are wearing a different hat (and therefore not in uniform) you would remove it and place it over your heart as a salute. To the second, hats used to be taken off indoors. That is not so much the custom now. If it is a problem for someone then I would take it off, otherwise I would likely leave it on. Note that even inside that hats are worn in crowds--lobbies, corridors, elevators, etc. In a assembly it would depend on the custom of the gr
  15. We are looking to drive to NOAC, even though it will take 3 days each way. But with 8 scouts going that will save about $3000 over flying. We have far fewer going out to the out of state camp this summer. I understand the council camps are much fuller than usual and we recently received notice that Emerald Bay still has openings and would we like to come. Generally they book up the first day unless you are willing to go the shakedown week.
  16. I've seen it more than I would have expected. Just about every combined ceremony I go to has one or two. Typically they are cubs who are into Little League or soccer. I'm also never sure what to do with the parents. While I welcome them all, I only give the loops and necker to those that I know are going to be registered leaders. This causes some hurt feelings at times with parents who feel slighted if they don't get a necker. I like the ceremony BTW, simple. It looks about the same as the one we do, although, IIRC, ours has lines for Nutiket and Meteu as well. Sometimes the dance te
  17. I been on both sides of this now. We also have an OA Ceremony Team that does about a half dozen crossovers a year. The crossover is mostly a pack thing. Generally there will be a couple of difference troops represented. I've never understood the troop that are getting scouts that don't bother to come. That would seem to be a good indicator that they are not the troop to join. On the other hand, I'm not sure it is proper to force the troop welcome the cubs that are not crossing over. I'll do this, but unless I know they are joining the troop I may not have a necker and loops to present the
  18. Maybe this from REI: http://www.rei.com/product/612220 I wonder why they are breaking, ours have held up. I'll have to check and see if we have a spare from a pair that has been trashed in some other manner. I think I have one that I don't use the belt for.
  19. I recommend the badge magic for the MB sash. As Gern said, it makes a mess of shirts but works fine for the sash. BTW..Why don't they put a button hole in the top of the sash? It would hook to the shirt with the epilette button so the darn thing doesn't keep falling off these kids with no shoulders.
  20. I find February early for crossover for logistic reasons. Partly because the district pinewood derbies tend to be in March and the district crossover is in late March or April. The bulk of the crossover occurs later for us and I'm never sure what to do with the early crossovers. I also don't like having AOL at the same time as crossover. Mostly this is from a ceremonial POV, the images in the two events don't transition all that well. Also it assumes that all the scouts getting their AOL are continuing to Boy Scouts. I feel a bit sorry for the 1 or 2 Webelos who are standing up there with
  21. He likely would have done it 1970-76 although it could have been in the early 60's when my older brother was a scout. I don't recall him wearing beads, but then I don't recall anyone wearing beads back then. He kept everything, so it is in a file somewhere. Because he kept everything, it is task to find anything. The house has been cleared out some, but I'm not sure anyone has dared tackle the files in a systematic way. Likely, most of them will just be tossed, if they haven't been already. I'll send a letter to Catalina Council, they may still have records going back that far.
  22. I've been putting it off for years now. But I've finally sent in my registration for Wood Badge. I hope I'm a Bear 'cause their part of Back to Gilwell always cracks me up. I wish I could wear my dad's old participant necker. He must not have finished his ticket, at least I've not found his beads.
  23. To think that having an Eagle advisor takes away from the SM is a mistake. I'm the SM for a troop of 60. We had 12 Eagles in the last year. I was very involved with each. But the advisor provided an additional resource for the scout to use. He doesn't need to use the advisor and the advisor is not a gatekeeper. Could I do without him? Sure, but I'd not serve all the scouts as well. As for the PL working with the scout. Often this is the PL, ASPL, SPL in the first place. He may be an older scout who has been AWOL for the past year and not likely even think of himself as being in a patrol.
  24. It is not uncommon, although more common is helping out with the fees. It may be in the troops best interest to send key leaders to WB. If the CC had asked that the troop send the SM I wouldn't think twice about this. Asking to be sent as well seems a bit much, but even then it could be worthwhile. At ~$215 it might be enough to prevent a scouter who is already giving up one weekend a month as well as the other "hour a week" from attending. I've not gone mostly because I've not made the time. But if the troop wanted me to go strongly enough to pay, I would certainly make the time.
