Woapalanne, a club that has religious requirements for membership discriminates on the basis of religion (e.g. the BSA). A club that doesn't have such requirements isn't discriminating on the basis of religion. A club that has ANY requirement discriminates, religious or otherwise!

In my opinion, EDGE isn't wrong, just not needed. The BSA has had teaching methods in place for decades that work just fine. To me, it seems someone at the BSA paid a lot of $$$$ for EDGE and now they have to use it! Making it part of the requirements only reinforces this.

My problem: I have a bunch of boys who when they want to start a merit badge, ask me if we have the merit badge book in our library. How is this a problem? A Scout is thrifty.

EDGE is a fancy acronym for teaching skills the way the BSA has been teaching for decades! In another 10 years, there will be a new fancy acronym for the same thing!

The 'melting down' is more indicative of a child who does care, who is surprised by the reaction... Nah. The meltdown is his way of getting his way. He's not surprised! It does seem the unit let this behavior continue. That said, now is the time to nip it in the bud or it will spread and then it will be almost impossible to rein in.

Interesting. If I was on the BOR and aware of these issues, I would not vote to pass this Scout. The written explanation would include the reasons why this Scout was not passed and what he needs to do to pass and a time frame to complete this. I would bet dad would toss a major hissy fit and when he didn't get his way, he would pull junior and head to another Troop. And that's OK.

I've never had to NOT sign after a SMC but if I did it would be followed up by a letter to the Scout and a copy to the CC. Why would there ever be a reason to NOT sign off on a SMC if one was held? The requirement is to participate in one. Nothing more, nothing less. And does the SMC have to be done prior to the BOR?

If you schedule a SMC and hold a SMC, the requirement is complete.

His son failed his Life Scoutmaster conference but dad signed him off on it anyway. You can't fail a Scoutmaster Conference at any rank. The requirement states Take part in a Scoutmaster conference There is no pass/fail.

I'm with BadenP on this. Parents and/or relatives should not be allowed to sign of ANY requirements for their son/relative and the rules should be changed to reflect this.

Scout meetings are part of daily life. Have they already fulfilled their POR for Eagle?
