  1. I've had mixed expereince with LDS units. When I was a pro, just trying to keep up with the current leadership was a challenge with the one LDS unit in my district. It seemed as if they changed leaders every 3-4 months instead of every year or so year. Needless to say they were not active in the district at all, i.e. never attended RTs, camporees or other activities. And when I was able to visit, the meetings were more focused on playing basketball than scout skills. Part of that I blame on the turnover of leadership and lack of training. To be honest they were a troop in name only. By comparision my council did have one week of summer camp where 50+% of the troops were LDS units. Only challenge was getting swim tests completed before classes on Monday. These troops were just like everyone else. Again these units had established and trained leadership; apparently their bishop's understood the program better and created stability in leaderhip compared to the LDS unit in my district.
  2. Sherm, Air Scouts did wear ties. i found a diagram of an air scout uniform for a show once.
  3. NE, Again I am new to this but what if an one day or weekend event did, repeat DID, meet the national standards, i.e. had certified people running the event, did the precamp inspection 60 days out, had things worked out with a local doctor and hospital, and all the other PITA stuff I am doing for my daycamp now, would you approve? I know the 2 day overniter that my council just completed followed national standards to the letter, and maybe a little over it. We not only had contact with the local hospital and physician, but we had an emergency hospital,i.e. disaster relief set up and staffed, several pre camp inspections, food certified by dieticians, etc etc. I guess what I am trying to say is that every council does something different.
  4. Agree with Pack. One thing to add, I'd bring my own weight just in case the store doesn't have any. A good outfitter will have weight, but some do not. Also BSA does sell some good packs, and they are guarenteed for life. While pack prices are steep, if you take care of it, it will last. I still have a used external pack I bought 22 years ago, and the internal frame I bought 11 years ago from the scout shop.
  5. #1 don't know #2 Fold into triangle and FOLD (caps for emphasis)instead of rolling.
  6. I also disagree with dropping tents, but for other reasons. Let's just say it was a "couple" of reasons. Now if the owner of the tent is OK with it being dropped, then OK. I also think that pots and pans are good so is noise, just not too close to the eardrums please.
  7. Unless they changed the way they are made, the traditional CS knife had a way of locking the blade into position. Can't really describe it, but it was a metal plate onthe side of the knife that you used your thumb to move.
  8. Moose Check out these two links http://meritbadge.org/wiki/images/3/30/Mike_Rowe-Dirty_Jobs_Eagle_Letter.pdf http://www.scoutingnews.org/2008/11/21/mike-rowes-offer-to-all-eagle-scouts/
  9. You're going to laff, but when I did my Canadian canoeing expedition, as well when I was playing in the water during my trip to the UK, I used one of the waterproof, disposable Kodak cameras. Some of the pics are postcard quality, as I had people accuse me of placing postcrads among my photos.
  10. Ok I found the reference to CSDC being able to be only one day. From Cub Scouting 2010 National Standards for Local Council Precamp Operational Accreditation of Cub scout/Webelos Scout Day Camp Day camp is an organized 1-to-5-day program for Tiger Cubs (and their adult partner), Cub Scouts, and Webelos Scouts under trained leadership at an approved site, during daylight or early evening hours but not overnight. Day camp youth participants are limited to registered Tiger Cubs (and their adult partners), Cub Scouts, and Webelos Scouts. page 1, second paragraph. I personally would discuss this with the CM, as each council will determine what is or is not a cub scout day camp. My council has determined that a one day al day long actity counts, a 3 day, 2 hours each day activity counts, and of course the traditional 5 day all day counts.
  11. have to agree with Base, most tigers don't go to a traditional CSDC b/c either A) they are not in CS yet as round up is in the fall or B) parents cannot attend or do not want to attedn camp for the ntire week. However there are a few scouting addicts like myself who went witht here TC son to CSDC the entire week. Got into trouble too, they made me program director for this year
  12. I was told that an adult over 21 with SSD and SA is no longer eligible to conduct tests due to the new Swimmer and Water Rescue Course that the BSA intro'd last year.
  13. True story, I am driving to NCS and the person I am giving a ride to calls her married son to wake him up so that he can get to work on time. I.KID.YOU.NOT.
  14. Ok i'm going to the experts, what would be a good handheld size weather radio to get. i am not lookign for soemthign with all the extras, ie USB port, battery recharger, solar panels, etc. I am looking for something that can fit in a pocket and keep me updated. Long story short, I heard so many rumors about bad weather this past weekend, taht I want one. I knew before hand that there was a chance for bad whether and was prepared for it but some of the stuff in hindsight was outrageous, and with a bunch of CS,mostly Tigers and their families, I want them to have positive expereince camping for the first time and didn't want to take any chances.
  15. CT, While you are correct in that anyone can wear a campaign hat, I do know a few councils that attempted to limit its wear to those who completed WB and/or JLT. But as mentioned it is THE hat that is equated to scouting around the world.
  16. Qwaz, I and the 30 others in my break out class on Venturing at PDL-1 said the name and the unit designation would cause confusion, and it has. Heck I saw a Venture patrol, using the Venturing Logo on their patrol flag, and a Venturing Crew put "Venture crew #*!" on their crew t-shirts.(This message has been edited by eagle92)
  17. You hit the nail on the head. It is your son's problem and he needs to deal with it. That is part of growing up.
  18. Base, Again I am new to the CS side of things, but the literature I received at NCS states a daycamp is anything from 1 to 5 days. I won't be able to post the citation tonite, got a pack meeting, But will tomorrow nite. But there is conflicting info out there from national. I think part of the challenge is that for the longest time CS did not do much outdoor activities. It was usally limited to CSDC ( which I do not remember being offered while a CS in the early 1980s) parent and son campout over a weekend, and as Webelos with a troop. I beleive res camp came about in the 1990s, but don't quote me on that ( although I'm told it was piloted in my current council and may be able to find out more). And every council is different. I know that my old council has mad megaevents for cubs sicne the early 1990s, 10-12K folks, but my current council just had their first megaevent for CS this past weekend, and is seemed at times as if including the CS was an afterthought. Thankfully everyone had a great time. But yes day camps vary form council to council and event district to district. In my current council, out of 9 districts, only 2 have day long, 5 day camps. The others are either 3 days, evenings only, or both. In fact most of the districts don't call it "day camp" but rather "twilight camp" (This message has been edited by eagle92)
  19. Thanks for the link Emb! K9 if you ever want to know ANYTHING about ANY older scout programs in the BSA, EMB is da man! Yep 89 or so is when they switch to, INHO, the ugly tan background patches for both rank and POR. Glad the OA, District committee, and Cub Scout POR patches have a colored background.
  20. Yep your an have the EBOR after the 18th birhtday. I had mine 1 month 6 days after mine, the DAC couldn't schedule an EBOR any earlier due to scheduling conflicts on both our parts. I actually knwo someone who had the EBOR completed 6 months after his 18th birthday, but he had to appeal to national to get it. Council approved the extension, but the DAC didn't schedule it until 6 months 1 day AFTER his 18th birthday, and an appeal to national needed to be made. He had a great reason, enlisted in the USAF and was in training, and was approved.
  21. Nick, If you are and Eagle or will be getting it soon, CONGRATULATIONS. As for sticking with Scouting, GOOD FOR YOU! I just hope that you don't make the same mistake I and other young adults make, and that is still act like we are SPLs and run things. You must remember that the role of an adult is to advise and mentor, and beleive it or not some of the youth will listen to you and take your counsel and advice over another adult's, even if it's the same exact advice. Now in reference to knots. I do hope that you are not trying to earn them for the bling, nor to try and show other adults that, yes you do know what you are talking about despite the age (this was my reason for going after a few knots to try and get some respect from fellow adults who don't take "youngsters" seriously. IT WON'T MATTER TO THEM WHAT YOU WEAR OR HAVE DONE YOU AS YOU ARE "TOO YOUNG TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING" [caps for emphasis. Actually that was screamed at me by another adult one time when I was 21] Anyway, most knots are either recognitions for going above and beyond in training, or recognition for outstanding service to youth. The easiest adult knot at this stage would probably teh Scouter's Training Award and it takes approx. 2 years to get.
  22. In addition to the plaque, we also do table decorations. The base has a point of the Scout Law cut into it, and a place to insert a 12" or 18" FDL The FDL has an Eagle Badge with the Eagle's name and year on one side, and the troop's custom patch onthe other. We use them for the receptions at COHs and ECOHs.
  23. Crazy Crow Trading Post www.crazycrow.com They are very reputable, give a scout discount if purchasing over a certain amount (I believe it's $150 now)and are a better source for OA supplies that Grey Owl IMHO ( although I do want that beaded sash with legend G.O. has!)
  24. Been thinking about the Venture strip on the sleeve. Venture Crews replaced the Leadership Corps in 1989 if memory serves. My troop had a stash of the original trapezoidal patches and newer round LC patches, so we continued to call the older scout patrol the LC, and when we finally went with Venture Crew, it was operated as the LC still. Anyway, the LC had a patch that was worn on the right sleeve, and I remember a few folks putting the VENTURE strip patch on the sleeve by mistake. EDITED: 1990 was when Leadership Corps was replaced by VENTURE CREWs. August 1, 1998 was when VENTURE CREWS were renamed VENTURE PATROLS and VENTURING CREWS split from EXPLORING.(This message has been edited by Eagle92)
  25. K9 Welcome back to scouting and welcome to the forums Yep the VENTURE CREW that was part of a troop is now called the VENTURE PATROL. As mentioned VENTURING was split from Exploring in 1998 and they degintated their units as CREWS. Why did they chose VENTURING, b/c most other associations call their upper levels Venturing.
