  1. Similar to Ed, we require our scouts to wear scout shirts and neckerchiefs to regular troop meetings. And we require them to wear a neat, clean pair of jeans or Scout shorts with the shirt. No sweats, cutoffs, etc. They all must have a complete summer uniform for Summer camp and/or High Adventure. For COH and BOR they wear the summer uniform (even in winter).
  2. "Miracle", the story ofHerb Brooks and the 1980 US Olympic Hockey team is a good story about dynamic leadership and working together to beat all odds.
  3. We have Eureka Timberlines, which hold 23- comfortably. We normally limit it to 2 per tent except for winter camping when we have three per tent for body heat!
  4. An old classic that was always hanging in the staff/leaders lounge at Summer Camp: "A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove. But the world may be different because I was important in the lofe of a boy."
  5. Mike - Troop 90 in Illinois sends its sympathies. DALE
  6. Des Plaines Valley Council in Suburban Chicago has a female Scout Executive for about ten years or so I would guess. She has done a credible job.
  7. Pardon me a minute while I wipe away the tears and get the lump out of my throat. A beautiful tribute. My sympathies and prayers to your entire family.
  8. This is one of the points I try to stress to new parents. They can make lifetime friends thru Scouting. I would have to say the majority of my friends today are either present or past members of our troop or troop committee. Plus these are true frinds you can count on that generally have the same values and morals as you do.
  9. We use North Country Canoe Outfitters. The owner, John Schiefelbein is a veteran scouter (Eagle scout, Silver Beaver, Wood Badge) who caters to scout groups and has excellent packages available.
  10. Troop 90 sends its deepest sympathies. Many years ago we also experienced the loss of a 13 year old scout, and it is never easy. I also have to drive home every day past the cemetery where he is buried, so he is in my thoughts rather frequently event though this happened about 25 years ago.
  11. I hate to disagree with fellow Eagles, but I have experience with BOTH the Scout base and a private outfitter in the Boundary Waters. We have found the equipment, food, and service to be far superior thru the private outfitter. It does cost a little more, but it is well worth it. And the private outfitter we use does have emergency radios available to their customers.
  12. Since we meet ina school, we do not hold regular troop meetings during the summer however we do have activities planned: Summer Picnic Ball Game trip Summer Camp Training Day Summer Camp High Adventure Trip Family Campout Our lull hits NOW in spring, not during the summer.
  13. OUr troop just celebrated our 50th Anniversary, and the oldest ribbon on our flag dates back to 1955. Very faded and hard to read!
  14. Our troop has a problem that occurs almost every year. Our scouts do well with merit badges and advancement at Summer camp. When the Scouting year starts up in September, they are enthused and do fairly well. As the year progresses the momentum slows down, to when we reach spring time, it has slowed less than a crawl. Any suggestions to maintain the momentum we have after camp and at the beginning of the Scouting year and keep it up all year? BTW, we meet at a school, so weekly meetings are held September thru early June, but keep a gopod schdule of activities over the summer, a
  15. While I haven't had the need to do a resume in 17 years, I would never even consider removing the "Eagle Scout" from it should I ever need to do one again.
  16. Hi! Just saw this message, as I have been out of touch for three days on s Scout camping trip to the U.S. Grant Pilgrimage in Galena IL. A record of over 8,500 scouts and leaders! The little town was over run with scouts and leaders! A great experience! I have been a Cub Scout, Boy Scout (Eagle), and Explorer as a youth, and upon graduating from college, the troop was floundering with no one willing to take over as SM. In order to keep the troop alive I agreed to take over as SM for a little while. That was in 1973! And still going strong. I have also served as a Jamboree Scoutma
  17. Our troop is sponsored by a school's parent teacher organization (Not a PTA affiliated group). They do provide a meeting place free of charge. If we want to use the building for a weekend activity, the first time during the school year is free. If we want to use it a second time during the year, there is a charge for the custodial staff. Seems like a fair system that has worked well for us.
  18. Our troop is chartered by a school's parent teacher organization, and they could care less if we are alive or not. The only thing they provide is a place to meet. Ane then if anything at all goes wrong with the building during the week, they look to us first for the blame. I have been with this unit for 30+ years and we always invite the CO president to Courts of Honor, Eagle Ceremonies and annual dinners, and I can count the number of times any one of them has shown up on half of one hand! Case in point, we just celebrated our 50th anniversary with a banquet attended by over 150 former me
  19. I laughed at the trip thru the gift shop. Our Jamboree Troop toured the National Cathedral in Washington DC and were very impressed with the ornateness, the history, and reverence of the building. When the tour ended, we were led to the exit, RIGHT THRU THE NATIONAL CATHEDRAL GIFT SHOP! I guess even religion has its financial needs!
  20. When I orient new scouts, I tell them there are 3 things not to scrimp on: Sleeping bag, flashlight, and rain gear. I have a Columbia Rainsuit which has been excellent so far. Ponchos can be impractical when doing physical things like canoeing for example.
  21. I use a salesman's sample case for all the essentials. Pens, Paper, Roster Book, MB Counselor list, Handbooks, Requirement Books, Applications, Equipment Lists, MB cards, compasses, and a few meeting ideas in case the TLC's meeting plan kind of falls apart! It does get up there in weight!
  22. When I was a young lad (early 60's), Mr. Reader put on one of his Gang Shows for the Chicago Council. I think he did this two years in a row. It was held at Morton High School in Berwyn. My 6th grade teacher's husband was a DE for Chicago COuncil, and Mr. Reader came and talked to our class about life in the UK. The show was fantastic as I recall, and I still have a piece of sheet music called "I Belong" that was the theme of the show. I'll post the words, which were very inspirational, when I get a chance to dig thru my music collection.
  23. Our troop uses Timberline Outfitters 4 man tents (usually with 2 boys in them). We also have a number of 6 man Timberline Outfitters used by the leaders (Again usually 2 in them). We discourage personal tents, and use them only on our Annual Family Campout.
  24. NWScouter - I know how you feel! I was one of those from the 60's!!
  25. We all know a lot of these forum topics deal with problems, disappointments and negativity, so I want to relate the exact opposite Our Troop celebrated its 50th Anniversary last night with a banquet. We attempted to find as many former scouts and leaders as possible. We had over 160 people in attendance, from as far back as 1960! We had 4 former SM's, 20 of our 36 Eagle Scouts, and had people come from 3 different states. It was at a commercial banquet hall, so no one had to work and we could all just enjoy ourselves. It was great seeing people you haven't seen for 30+ years. Th
