  1. Just went down to the local store that sells Boy Scout paraphernalia. It is a block away from the library. I bought the merit badge book Citizenship in the World. What is going on in the Boy Scouts of America? What is the United Nations? The United Nations is the last step in the evolutionary process of political organization. All the workers of the world unite! was the cry of Karl Marx and Engels. In the book, One World (published by One World Publishing Co, Notre Dame, Ind. 1984), John C. Kiang traces this movement to socialism: As far as world unity is concerned, Marx and
  2. Wheeler, welcome to the forums. I confess though to being puzzled at your posts. As I read them, I feel as though I am preached down to. You wrote, "This is about giving you an intellectual basis for the things we believe in." Are you a Scout or Scouter? I am a Cub Scouter and Scouter, and when it comes to Scouting, I understand the program fairly well, continue in training and in discussion with fellow Scouters to learn even more (often by discussion here on these forums), and I know from experience that the program that is effective. I'm not sure where philosophy fits into this, but I
  3. In the past, more organizations such as Elks, Kiwanis, Moose, etc. were COs for units. Society was more community based. Now the predominant COs are Catholic, LDS, and other denominational religious organizations. Where is the BSA marketing itself? My opinion is it is marketing itself to non-demoninational Christian audiences. The "church of the outdoors" from the past is being replaced with organized religion. The tolerance and fairness of the past is being replaced by "no avowed homosexual leaders." Regardless if you think it should or should not go in this direction, it is not a reci
  4. For too many, Scouting is about advancement and retention and not about character building or citizenship. Very few, out of the tens of thousands of Scouters, consider being a Scout or a Scouter a 24/7 thing. Scoutlike behavior is only required during Scout functions. So what if the kid was expelled from school for attacking a teacher, that's not our worry. Actually expect Scouts to do a good turn daily? Don't be ridiculous. Being of good character has gone out of fashion in our society. Heck, look at our last president. Politicians are expected to be crooks and people are surp
  5. I would attempt to paraphrase something Bob White once posted here. Here goes: Because Boy Scouts has as its goal the training of boys in qualities such as leadership, citizenship and morality... qualities that our society needs. Boy Scouts uses fun and outdoor activities to keep boys interested in a program that teaches these worthwhile traits. Apologies to Bob, maybe if he sees this he could resurrect the original post. to become
  6. BobWhite -- actually, I think you and I may be closer to an agreement than you think. 1) Note that in my post I consistently said the "purpose of Scouting", not the "purpose of the BSA", as you have done. This is an important point to me, because my only criticisms of the BSA are when it deviates from Scouting. (I'm much more in love with the "movement" of Scouting, the glorious game created by B-P, than I am the organization of BSA Inc. that operates the Scouting program here in the USA. I think you already recognize the distinction between BSA and Scouting, because I note you are often
  7. TJ "Here's where we disagree: the "purpose of the [scouting] program" is not to be a faith-based organization. Scouting's purpose is to build citizens of good character and leadership. Among the many methods we utilize to accomplish that purpose is teaching a Scout his Duty to God." That is not an accurate representation. In fact you have it in reverse. The purpose or mission of the Boy Scouts of America is "to prepare young people to make ethical choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law." So "Duty to God" a major point of the Oath, an
  8. I think that history has not included all of Mr. Lincoln's views on different issues. Some of the speeches he made could raise some eye brows. Okay...I wasn't sure where you were going. As to Lincoln's writings and speeches, you may have a point. Nevertheless, I think the gist of Mr. Bennett's comments is right on the mark. Politicians and the media of the day have made a mockery of our country's history. To hear some of them tell it, it's amazing anyone defended our nation. If you believe today's version of history, no one should be proud to be an American. The pilgrims were
  9. I have been reading this board for several months now, and have decided that it is time to step in... First, I agree with yaworski in that this is one of those "boys will be boys" encounters, the older boy just trying to get a rise out of the younger boy. Boys will often use anything remotely sexual (particularly homosexual) for the subject of such comments for the simple reason that they tend to get the most immediate and strongest reaction. Just as acco40 said, the boys of this generation call each other "gay" as an insult, not as a proposition. From what I got out of the situation,
  10. Jcfraz says: The reason I don't say the pledge is because; a.It was written by a socialist: Francis Bellamy I think most people who have learned this fact recently (as I did when the "Pledge decision" came out last month, accompanied by historical articles on the Pledge) were surprised to learn that the Pledge was written by a "socialist." But what does that really mean? I just went looking around the Internet and found this site http://www.vineyard.net/vineyard/history/pledge.htm It discusses Bellamy somewhat and has links to other articles that go into greater
  11. Quiote, I give you the United States of America...a national organization comprised of fifty defined sub-organizations known as states. Each of these states have a supprotive role in the existence of the national organization, form their own local leadership and effectively handle their own internal problems through their own constitutions. Each provides support to each other in time of emergency, but at all times are aware of the necessity of loyalty and adherence to rules made by the parent organization. Some of the states impose capital punishment, some don't. Even still, they hold togeth
  12. Our Troop bylaws has a provision that the SM can override the normal rank requirement and time in other jobs for the position of SPL. When we wrote our bylaws, we recognized there might be times this would be necessary. IMHO, the SPL is an elected postion and shouldn't be appointed unless there is no way to have an election. The election process teaches the Scouts a lesson in how in the real world leaders are selected to lead our society. One the aims of Scouting is Citizenship Devolpment. By modeling that in the Troop's leadership, we help the Scouts to understand the process.
  13. From what I've seen in our council lately and read on this board it seems that ranks and merit badges are losing their meaning. Between summer camp and merit badge universities it appears as if we are awarding badges simply to "just get the badge". I was part of a Scoutmaster conference for a boy working on his Eagle project, he's 17. He had just completed Citizenship in the Nation at our councils merit badge U. In the course of questioning I asked him how many Senators there were from our state and who they were. Needless to say he had no clue. I then asked him at the next 2 meetings and he s
