  1. Our troop completed our winter high adventure outing the weekend of March 24-28 an yearly campout called the Frostbite Challenge held near Fraser B.C.

    In July we are hiking the Chilkoot trail and have several shakedown camps planned for it to work the bugs out of the menu and camping plan.

    Summer 2007 we are looking into several possiblities a paddle down a portion of the Yukon River a strong contender at this point

    hikeoholic have a great time in Lassen Park, I grew up in scouting not too far from there and have been working on the troop commitee here on the possibility of showing the scouts an area they havent seen yet

    Have a great time out there

  2. Update on the merger of Western Alaska Council and Southeast Alaska Coucil...

    The merger happend on Jan 1, 2006 it appears the new name is going to be Greatland Alaska Council. A CSP is on the way and should be hitting the streets in Feb. I dont have a map to show the entire area

    of the new council but will extend from Nome to the north to Ketchikan (yes I spelled that right) to the south.

    No word at this time what the OA Lodge is going to do

  4. This is a re-re post from a earlier clone of this thread

    IMHO a new uniform would be based on the current BDU design used by the military and police, NO not camouflage! Flat green pants and a buff/tan shirt, loose fitting so they are comfortable for activities when warm or thermals can be worn underneath for cooler climates. Nylon or synthetic would be a bonus.

    Shirt;

    Make the shirt so it can be worn tucked in or out and still look good, use the cuff design on the BDU so that the sleeve can be worn rolled up. Deep six the epaulets the buttons are not comfortable under shoulder straps or replace the buttons with Velcro.

    Pants;

    Put real cargo pockets on the pants sized to fit a scout handbook at a minimum, if not large cargo pockets a combination flashlight/knife pocket, on the cuffs, blousing ribbons to tuck pants into the boots to help keep ticks out.

    Hat;

    There isnt really one hat for all jobs. I dislike the over-seas hat and for one am glad it went the way of the beret, while they look good in town they really dont belong in the woods. I wear a Tilley in all but the coldest weather and a Campaign hat for COH and for summer camp.

    Belt;

    Bring back the bottle opener leather belt! I have one from WOSM scout store with the 2007 jambo logo. Also increase the quality of web belt buckle.

    Okay enough venting for now

  5. -Rant mode on

    What I would like to know is why this thread is here, what does it have to do with helping to run troop, pack, crew, etc. Can it improve your popcorn sales, make for high adventure campouts, cause the uniform police to point out its blasphemy against the uniform method? I dont see any references to anything scouting here please folks theres enough politics within scouting with the need to drag any more in.

  6. We have a long weekend winter camp "Frostbite Challenge" Normally it takes part the third weekend of March The camp takes place near Carcross British Columbia and has scouts from Canada and Alaska taking part. I've seen temp ranges from +40f to -30f in the nearly ten years I've been going.

    Is that what you have in mind or is it a bit out of the way?

  7. When a scout here is advancing from Star to Life I encourage but do not require them to seek sources outside of scouting for three of their six hours. I do this to get them to look outside the box and hopefully prepare them for a future eagle project.

    Congrats and thank you for taking on the irksome tasks and boundless joys of Scoutmaster. Dont let the jerks get you down the majority out there are glad to see you around. If your hiking trail finds its way here to Juneau you'll find a campfire with a boiling kettle waiting.

  11. Here in Troop 21 we try to have a "physical" meeting about every three months this could be at the indoor pool, climbing gym, bowling alley, or the gym, we will be having an pool meeting in a couple of weeks to do swim tests for summer camp.

  12. We had a late moment change of mind and now South East Alaska Council is looking for a Scoutcraft Director for summer camp. While I dont know what the pay will be they will at least spring for half of the airfare to get you to/from Juneau. Our summer camp season is short, only the month of June.

    The camp sits near some of the best Salmon and Halibut fishing holes in Southeast Alaska and there is a couple of rivers nearby that have hungry Cutthroat trout.

    If you want more details call Lee at 907-789-8440 M-F 9-5. Hope to see you there!
