  1. Very true, there has been numerous schisms in UK Scouting. The British Boy Scouts which broke away in 1909 was initially very successful and for a time looked like it might become the dominant force in Scouting. They even formed the first world scouting organisation in 1911, The Order of World Scouts, http://www.boy-scout.net/en/index.html Because of internal fighting the BBS's glory was short lived and today their are only a few remaining groups. This is the only one I could find with a group website; http://2ndgoringandstreatley.org.uk/main.php

Another breakaway occurred in the 1920's and led to the formation of a group calling itself the Kindred of the Kibbo Kift; http://www.kibbokift.org/ they rapidly started to follow a very socialist line and attempts by the UK Labour Party to make it its youth organisation resulted in another split and the Woodcraft Folk; http://www.woodcraft.org.uk/

The European Scout Federation wasn't a breakaway group but was formed in Germany after WWII as a way of bringing the youth of Europe together. They have a few groups in the UK. http://www.fse-scouts.eu/w/index.php?title=Main_Page

The Baden-Powell Scout Association was formed in response to attempts to modernise scouting in the UK during the late 60's. https://www.traditionalscouting.co.uk/ They're the largest of the breakaway Scout associations with a membership of a few thousand. Quite often a Scout group that has left the Scout Association because of seemingly irreconcilable differences will join the BPSA. http://www.fakenhamlancasterscouts.org.uk(This message has been edited by Chug)

  2. Interesting. I'm actually glad that The Scout Association has never taken legal action against the other smaller UK associations (BPSA, BBS, FSE). Although their methods may differ, their aims are the same and I consider them fellow Scouts.

The UK Chief Commissioner seems to agree with me as well.http://www.escouts.org.uk/forum/showpost.php?p=235364&postcount=50

  3. In the district where I do my Scouting we have one Scout Troop that is run by a gay couple who're in a civil partnership, another group has a a transgendered leader. There's probably other that I am not aware of. I've known of leaders to be dismissed for criminal offences and for having an affair, but never for their sexuality. All adult leaders in the UK are checked against the Criminal Records Bureau, and are interviewed by the district warrants committee before they can take up their position.

Sponsoring of groups is usually done on an individual basis, rather than en-mass. Sponsoring authorities can limit membership of that group to the members of the church or school or employees if it is a business. Exclusion on grounds of sexuality would not be permitted. The District Commissioner is the final arbiter of all disputes between a Scout Group and its sponsoring authority.

I'd like to point out that none of the groups in my district (Thanet) have any restrictions on membership.

  4. SeattlePioneer.

As far as I can find, the only ban the BSA has against homosexuals is as adult leaders. So surely American Scout leaders are already dealing with gay Scouts?

Of course I'm also impressed that the BSA has such an abundance of leaders that it can discriminate against potential candidates.(This message has been edited by Chug)

  5. As a UK Scoutleader I find this thread quite amusing. Do some people here really think that a young person who is just realising that his/her sexual orientation doesn't fit with societies norms is really going to choose a crowded tent to make a move on someone of the same sex?

BTW, here's a link to the actual Scout Association publication that seems to be getting some people so flustered;http://www.scoutbase.org.uk/library/hqdocs/facts/pdfs/fs185082.pdf(This message has been edited by Chug)

  6. The Euro is a fundamentally flawed currency. They've tried to shoehorn together vastly different economies, working on different economic cycles. Interest rate are set by the European Central Bank, and can't be adjusted by individual countries to suit their needs. Outside of the Euro Ireland could have increased interest rates to cool its overheating housing market, inside this wasn't an option available to it.

  7. Bear has said that his Born Survivor/Man Vs Wild show is a "How to" rather than him being in actual trouble. He's done things with his life that most of his critics wont achieve in 10 lifetimes. He is extremely enthusiastic about Scouting, and takes his role as Chief Scout very seriously. If you look at the wristbands he wears in the series the purple one is a "Scouts, join the adventure" one.

There's not many Scouts in the UK who'll hear a bad word said against him.
