  1. While I do agree that the tuff totes are great, when we went in 05 we flew so they were out. we got large duffles from wally world. everybody also had a clean 5 gal pail with lid. we used that for storing the bedding and as a seat. also was useful for washing out things like socks. everything else went into large zip locks bags. everyone also gor to 55gal garbage bags to wrap the whole thing in if it rained. Hth
  2. On your way to Santa Fe, Take the "high Road" stop at Rancho de Chimayo for Lunch. Even if you just get an appetizer it's worth it. Also a great fast place in Santa fe is Tortilla Flats. Esp. for breakfast.
  3. I hope no one misunderstood me. I think this is a great idea. Actually I think there should be more of this kind of involvment. Get someone like Robert Rodreguiz to do cinematography. What about some of those paid guys on Capital hill doing Citizenship badges. Most Scout only get one shot at Jambo. Make an impression. When I volunteered in 05 we served dinner to Steve Fossett. I ran into him the next day in the mens room. He remembered me and had a great chat while walking back to his sub camp. There's a memory I'll have.
  4. Scoutldr, You are right I did get Guys last name wrong. I used to work with a Fennilli and I always do that. I don't think this impacts the other 99% at all. Jambo is a big deal to most boys. How cool would it be to come home and show off that Merit Badge Card signed by Wolfgang Puck. If you were into the whole cooking thing as a career that would be something. Kind of like the rumor I heard that Spielberg did cinimatography a few Jambos ago. I still think it's great that these guys are doing this. BTW Jacque Torres is a Master Chocolatier Rick Bayless does real Mexican
  5. Alot the the youth these days don't know who Wolfgang Puck is except that his pizza is in the freezer at the grocery store. While I commend that fact that these Chefs are helping, and if I were going to Jambo I'd would make it a point to stop by the merit badge, maybe National should have looked for someone that the boys would know. Mario Battalli, Guy Fenelli,Jacque Torres,Rick Bayless.
  6. OK all you Ohio guys. What is near Hocking Hills. The PLC is thinking of trying it out for a campout. any Scout Camps and anything else to do in the area? The park looks huge so I'm sure they won't be bored.
  7. That's what I needed to know. now it all makes sense!
  8. I just recieved my Training and Scoutmasters key knots. One of them came with a very small Scout pin. this looks like the ones that I see on some of the other knots for doing advanced work. Where does this little thing go. I know I should know the answer. No they didn't tell me at council since I missed the ceremony due to an Eagle event and the knots were mailed to me. Thanks for the help.
  9. Our Troops 10th annual cooking competition campout is coming up in 2 weeks. Dinner is usually a fairly big deal and lunch is more of the fun stuff. One year they selected "backpack lunch" as the theme. There were guidelines and some of the patrols really stretched it by having items that needed a cast iron skillet. The PLC saw this as an oppurtunity for a lession on backpacking. The morning of the event they announced a 3 mile hike which included lunch. Everyone had to pack what they were making and hike it out into the field and prepare it there. The one guy insisted that he take
  10. Our Charter Org. does Adopt a highway. they have 2 miles. We do it with them 3 times a year. We do 1 mile they do the other. Service hours, good turn for America. The best part of the deal is that the COR buys ice cream for everyone that shows up. We usually get good turnout and are done in about 1.5 hours or less.
  11. Cooking as Eagle YES!!! I'm still looking for a couple of Scouts that want to practice their painting MB skills on my fence. They really do need to rewrite the cinematography MB book. it still uses VHS tape and a cassette recorder. Bring back taxidermy. I can't wait to go out an but my "Offical BSA home Taxidermy kit" including one dead crow.
  12. Eamonn, That is sort of what I was thinking. A nice walk in the woods with a stop for lunch. I think the boys may be a little over ambitious.
  13. We just had 21 new crossovers. the Troop guides, instructors and PLC are trying to come up with a plan to incorporate many of the T-2-1 requirements into the 5 mile hike. They don't want it too bogged down but are open to ideas. Right now they have. plan menu for patrol, cook on light weight stove, map and compass/orienteering, plant and animal i.d. Other suggestions?
  14. I'm thinking of stepping down as SM before the end of the year. I would have done it a year ago but I waited until some of the ASM's were fully trained. Our Troop is large(85) and we had a few years of slim pickings for ASM's. We recently had great turnout on that area and now I would feel comfortable moving away. The Committee and COR will send out the invitations to those interested and along with the SPL will start interviews and the replacement process. The Scoutmaster before me backed away quickly but was always there to help answer questions. He would show up about once
  15. Our Troop doubled in size in two years. I learned real quick that as SM I couldn't do all the SMC's. I assigned 2 ASM's to each patrol. Now when the boys need a SMC they go to thier ASM's. I'll get a report back from the ASM or many times I'll sit in. I usually do Satr and up myself.
  16. WE do pretty much what all the other posters have added. One thing we have added this year is name tags. WE get the names of the boys joining the Troop before hand and use those leather hanging tags from either scout shop or now available from Tandy leather. Once they cross over we put the tag on them right away and tell them it is prat of their "offical" uniform and not to remove it except for washing. Our Troop is large 70+ and we just got 20 new crossovers. Name tags are a must!!
  17. We have an Eagle Scout out of out Troop who due to age is now considered an Adult and has stayed on the roster. Since he is studying film in college he has decided to be a cinematography MBC. The boys in the Troop love the fact that this person they have known for years and was at one time their SPL is doing this. The Troop has planned a campout around the Merit badge were most of the day will be spent making movies(within the rules we set)and cracker barrel will be Oscar night. This MBC is a hundred miles away but still wants to help the guys. So he has set up instructional videos
  18. I don't know if this will help but here goes. Our Troop grew by leaps and bounds about 2-3 years ago. Almost doubleing in size. Now all these guys are looking for POR's. We have no shortage of crossovers, average 20+ per year. What we did was to get a at least 2 boys from each patrol trained as instructors. Then we had them specialize in a certain area. Joey does knots, billy totin chip etc. you get the idea. Now when it's skill building time the SPL says "all the first years tonight will meet with joey and learn knots. the other instructors help but it's joey's show. Then it rotate
  19. Try "henry the hatter" in Detroit. I think the web site is henrythehatter.com They offer a hat stretcher that works both round and oval. If you are ever in Motown you have to stop by this place. I took my vintge campaign hat in and had it cleaned and re-sized while I waited all for a mear $3.00. Best service anywhere!!
  20. We went a few years back and had a blast. I went for the Scoutmaster conf. the boys went off with thier groups and the wife went to "handiland" and touring. If you get to town try the "burrito banquet" the place is just interesting in my eyes. We flew into Albaquerque rented a car, did a 1 1/2 days in Santa Fe. took the high road to Taos, Stop at Rancho De Chimaya for lunch on the way to Philmont. On your day oof you will have a car to get around. Crazy as it sounds we bougth some of those "space bags" before we left. We packed all our extra cloths/uniforms souveners in the
  21. So what everyone is saying is that because this guy basically broke a contract that my son should suck it up and use it as a learning experience. I'm sure if this was a non-Eagle situation and it was your business or job the answers would be different. Thanks for nothing.
  22. I'm reaching out to the forum here for some help locating a part for a project. My sons project was to build a fire pit with benches behind the church. The pit opeing is 48". The local fire chief said it needed a spark screen. Son located a person to make one since the size was not standard. A price was agreed on and my son raised just enough funds to cover the cost(600.00). Now that it's time to order the screen the guy is changing his tune and wants another $225.00 and says that the screen needs to be a different size than what was quoted. He has hung up on my son twice now when
  23. Knowing that I'm probably going to be stepping down as SM in the next 8 months I've beenjoking with some of the boys about this kind of stuff. They suggested the Case "Hobo" model knife withthe Boy Scout logo (hard to find and I wouldn't use it anyway). A new red wool jacket. Too many memories in my old one. I really like the scrapbook idea. That's something I would really treasure. If my Troop is reading this... hint hint.
  24. Give me some sage advice here. Our committee chair thinks he is the ruler of the Troop and we are fighting a constant to get him to back off. He took the job when the former CC got a job transfer and no one else stepped up. He can not get over the fact that the Troop is boy lead and that they call the shots on most things. Example. The boys want to go on a biking outing to another state to ride an historic trail. When they presented the idea he shook his head and mumbled that that wouldn't happen. When asked later about it he said"it's too long of a drive". Eventhough it was no lo
  25. Being a carver I really don't like the "broom handles" sold at the scout shops. Try this site for some really good wood and ideas. Their end caps are really nice. treelineusa.com
