  1. What Koreascouter said is right on the money as is what mk9750 said.

DoD will provide for the "needs" for injured/sick troops. However the "wants" are usualy left to family, USO, Red Cross, and the Service member himself. I speak from one who was hospitalized when I was on active duty (some years ago).

As for the VA its much worse! A lot of these old guys have no one. And those who still have family are rarely visited or forgoten.

My last troop visited the VA home/hospital every few months (more if possible). It was hard to get things started at first. The boys were a bit timid going to a nursing home environment, but once they started to interact with the Vets things "got moving". The boys realized (as one said)that "these guys are part of history"! We had a hard time getting the boys to go home. One of the "Stars" of the Vets was a WW1 Vet (101 years old)who happened to be a former Scout and Scoutmaster. He was still very sharp and loved to have the boys recite the Scout Oath & Law for him (he would join in!). It became a favorite service project for the boys. As well a number of Eagle Projects were done for the VA. It was a special thing to be a part of.

I am currently trying to put together the same thing here in my new Council. I would encourage everyone to do what they can for the Veterans in their area.

A sign outside the VA in Boise Idaho sums it up:

THE PRICE OF FREEDOM IS VISIBLE HERE.

  2. Back to the orginal thread...

I'm new in Venturing and with the Dark Green Shirt having Green Tabs does not stand out like the others. You would think that SOMEONE would have noticed by now. I have heard of other colors that would contrast better but no one taking it further. Any one else?

  3. I'm with dsteel. It depends on "what hat you are wearing" and where you are going.

Blue & Gold, COH, Eagle Court, etc. YES

Den Mtg (as dad), most Pack mtg (as dad). Driving to camp (as Dad). No.

My Father (an old Scouter) told me once when I questioned him on the same topic (as a Scout). He said "What do want to accomplish by wearing it". Someone may distract or confuse Cubs/Scouts at some gatherings. Some may even upstage the leaders or intimadate (SP) them.

    Good Luck!

  4. An adult wearing a Youth World Conservation Award? Scout or Cub?

Sounds strange. Seams like wearing MBs on your sleave. Both are youth earned.

I can understand a "Typical" Temp patch such as a camp or program attended (OA, etc.)Heck, I wear my camp patch that I attended as a scout and later as staff.

Is there any guidance in the insignia guide?

  5. Its a unit recognition program that seams to differ from Council to Council. My last Council in Idaho had that "Recognition Program" (Segments) for Cubs only. The "main" patch was a Round Council Patch and you would have "Segments" sewn around it. Segments were earned for for any activity the pack wanted to use it for. Usualy for the monthly one, Day Camp, Scouting for food, etc. They had a policy of only Two rings of segments around the Council patch. However I saw many boys with three or even four (that did run down his shirt to his belly).

In my current Council it is used by both Cubs and Scouts. Same type of system, except the main patch is a District patch (we have 19 Districts).

In both Councils this type of program was totaly controled by the unit. The Council just sold the patches and segments.

Boy are they a pain to sew on!

FYI, I believe that there are almost 100 different segments.

  6. I wear the knots for all my youth awards: Eagle, Arrow of Light, and Youth Religous Award. As well as my Adult award knots.

I wear my OA flap, and in the "Temp" position I wear the Camp patch from my days as a Scout and Camp Staff; Camp Hi-Sierra. I wear my Brotherhood Sash to all OA activities I attend, to include those at camp.

I hope your time at camp was great!

  7. I'm a new employee with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (Department of Interior). I work in "Property Management". Prior to this I worked for the Military in one fashon or another. Either Civilian (DoD), Fulltime National Guard or Active Duty Army.

My Scouting background. I'm an Eagle, two years Camp Staff. I've been involved in Cubs (CM, ACM, WL CC), Scouts (SM, ASM, CC), Varsity (CC), Exploring (Advisor)and now Venturing (Crew Advisor). I love the program(s), espically with two sons involved (10 & 15).

  8. Here's another....

I was a brand new Scoutmaster (by default, he quit, I was the ASM) I took our Troop on a service project to the local Veterans Home for the annual VET Olympics. The boys helped out by escourting the Vets to each event and helping at the BBQ.

The POW/MIA group was giving rides in their "Tethered" Hot Air Balloon. Up and Down.

Well, as a thank you, the boys were given free rides.

I did not think anything about it until a day later. When my DE called me to chew me out after he saw the troop in the paper.

    Oops!

  9. The "requirement " in question is

#4. "While a Life Scout, serve actively for a period of 6 month in one or more of the following positions of responsibility.

It then lists the positions in the Troop and the Team.

My position is that the list is the answer, Period. My friend in another Council says that his information says that a position in the Youths Young Mens Church group (NOT THE TROOP/TEAM/CREW) meets this requirement.

    What say you?

I am not refering to any Handicap considerations.

  10. Please settle a argument.

Can a young man use his position in his church young mens group as leadership towards Eagle? I am not refering to a Troop or Team position. Both my Council & District say no. The other side says his District and Council say yes.

    Who is right?

  11. I think that a better location for this AWARD would be above the right pocket across from the World Crest on the Left side.

Currently it should be worn on the Right Pocket in the "Temporary Patch" Position.

This is not a Temp patch. It is an Award.

I know that the location I am suggesting is where the Jamboree Patch goes but far more boys will have the oportunity to earn this award than go to the National Jamboree.

If this does not work, maybe a new knot?

    What do you think?

  12. Things I would suggest?

1.Require MB counselors be not only registered w/BSA but also certified/recomended by someone (expert?)in the field. Also parents not allowed to be counselors to their own kids.

Limit what MBs the SM (or ASM) can counsel.

Outlaw MB "Pow-wows" AKA "Sweat Shops", where scouts go to a place and in one day as a group earn MBs.

2.Have some way to certify time in rank. (A national database could do this)Also in Leadership Positions. Reduce type of Positions that qualifies as Leadership (Scribe, Quartermaster, Historian, etc.)

Require the uniform as part of being active in your Troop/Team, etc.

3.Require THREE "Formal" Boards of Review.

    a. One at District (Scout Present)

    b. One at Council (Scout Present)

    c. One at National (Scout not Present)

Have only ONE Adult member from his unit be on each local board (Non-Voting member).

Record the minutes of each board of review, questions asked and the Scouts responses. This would be forwarded to the next level after finishing each Board. Require detailed

questions (and responses)on his Scouting background, experiences and Eagle Project.

Require a Correct Uniform for the Scout to go before the Board.

    4. Establish tight controls on Eagle Project approval. Require minimum amount of hours. Certify Scout Leadership involved. Monitor Parent involvement. (OK to help, not do)

Have three level pre-approval and post- approval.

    a. Unit

    b. District

    c. Council

For the District & Council have the same makeup as the actual Eagle Board (ie. only ONE unit member, non-voting).

    5. Consider having age requirements for senior ranks (ie. Life 14-15, Eagle 15-16 years old?)

    6. If National "Kicks Back" the Eagle Packet and is appealed, require a pannel of three people totaly seperate from the National Board review it prior to the original board.

    (No automatic approval on appeal)

    7. Have the all above items "Requirements" not optional items.

Mabey I am going over the hill on this but in this era of "PC" and "Positive Self Image"

I am tired of "lowering the bar" and giving them a pass just so we don't "Rock the Boat" or to show tolerence.

I am tired of seeing "Eagle Mills" as well as MB "Sweat shops". These "PAPER EAGLES" make a Mockery of what the rank of Eagle stands for.

Hope I was not too extream?

  13. Eamonn,

So you are a "Queens Scout" from the UK. Question: When Prince Charles (or his son) becomes "King", will the rank become "Kings Scout"? If so, will your rank/award change also?

Also, is there a "web page" that shows what the award (patch/medal) looks like.

Can you wear it on your BSA uniform?

Sorry for drifting from the thread.

    CR14

  14. I think there is a BIG difference between

    A.pushed (supported/encouraged)and B.pushed (forced/harrassed/done by proxy)

I think all Eagles were pushed(A)by there Parents. Though some were pushed (B). Most of those (B) did not do it themselves. They did not truly earn the rank. They are "Paper Eagles". (See another Thread by that name)

For the ones in the first catagory (A) BSA has made available the "Mothers Pins" to show our gratitude to the one who helped out the most (or pushed (A)).;)

  15. On another line, When joining, inform the Parents on what is needed and where to purchase it. Also make the parents aware of any "Uniform Banks" in the area. The reason for no uniform may be the Family Budget.

Please do not take this topic into "the High Price of Uniforms." Or excuses on "why I can not afford one."

  16. Yarrow you hit the nail on the head!

First of all, I know that there are Scouts that are capable of earning their Eagle at/or before 13 ON THEIR OWN.

But I think we can agree that the majority of boys are not. Of the later, there are those whose Parents will not accept this (for what ever reason). They seem to want the Eagle more than their son. They are the ones who make their son earn MBs (one or more per month or else). Or sign off badges themselves. Arrange and Plan Eagle Projects and pressure Eagle Boards for passage.

When he was a Cub we would have ALL his Badges (Parents signed them ALL off) This attitude continued into Scouts.

To someone from the outside looking in, the boy is an Eagle. The papers say he passed the requirements. So, it must be so. But to those in the know, He is a PAPER EAGLE.

This title is not just for younger Scouts. It can apply to the Scout who for what ever reason, waited too long (soon to be 18). Again the Parents step in. Along with a blind commitee (Pressured by Parents). MBs not yet earned(or started)are signed off (even though requirements are 3 months to earn)the month before turning 18. The Eagle project planned and organized by Parents (all the Scout has to do is show up), as is the write up.

It gets even worse when the District & Council look the other way as to not offend anyone.

The bigest looser in this is the Scout. He learned nothing except how to cheat.

His leaders were a poor example, and they let him down. As did his Parents. For all the trouble, they should have bought a Eagle Medal from Ebay. It would mean the same thing, a "Paper Eagle". It means nothing to him, but everything to the Parents.

No mater the Scout is 12 1/2 or soon to be 18 the result is the same.

This is not an isolated thing. I have seen this happen and have talked to many others who have also. I sat on a Eagle board much like the examples above, when I voiced my concerns, they postponed the board until later (with out me). I was not asked again.

I won't get into "is 13 too early", "Le Voyageur" nailed it earlier in the thread.

My point is, why can't National tighten up? (Or direct the Councils/Districts to)

I have been told that even when The Eagle packet is rejected, when apealed, it is rarely turned down.

    A Scout is Trustworthy?

What about his Leaders and Parents?
