  1. My district holds a "Tiger Twilight Camp" in conjunction with Cub Scout Day Camp.

This is aimed at boys whop joined Cub Scouts as Kindergarteners during spring recruiting and will be Tigers in the Fall.

The program consists of two 6:30-8:30 "den meetings"  and participation in the Friday afternoon Cub Scout Day Camp beginning at noon.  On Friday boys shoot BB guns,  bows and arrows and do other day camp activities.

The aim is to show new boys and parents what a quality Tiger program should look like and feel like.

    Sounds great

  2. We have had good success in the Spring. This is what we do.

Put flyers in the take home school folders

Get the flyer into the school online newsletter

Stand in the car pick up lines the day of the recruitment for the K and 1st, tell them about it

Our district has a bounce house, so we borrow that for the Saturday and hold a carnival at school with popcorn and kickball.

typically we get a full den, we talk to the parents while the kids are bouncing and get them signed up.

  3. Mashmaster,

I'm really sorry for your loss as well. As someone who lost his father at a very young age, I know that the boys will have a feeling of isolation in addition to their sorrow. Perhaps you could find a way for the pack to honor their father. It will be very important for the boys to have a sense of belonging, and their friends in scouting can be a huge benefit.

    Thanks, we will try.

  4. I have had this issue. I hand them the book and volun-tell them to do a section of the achievement in front of the den :-) . You need to prep something but it goes like: "Bob, please tell the boys about honesty. Here is the book for the character connection. Thanks!" They basically can't say no and they do it without complaining. I think their boys like it too.

  5.

Really? that's an interesting idea? do you get many people to watch them? Could be an interesting idea to propose to my district. any chance there are any videos I could see as an example? not particularly new program related, just to get an idea of how you guys run it?

Here is where we keep them. Video quality isn't the best but you get the ideas.

  6. Thanks! That answers me perfectly. I know while doing these requirements' date=' normally they'd earn activity pins, too. Is that recorded online? Since those are also phasing out, would it be suggested to acquire them the same way? I ask because we agreed, pack wide, to cease with all belt loops for the sake of preventing confusion with newer scouts, June 1st. We didn't vote on activity pins but I assumed they'd follow the same rule. I just hate those grandfathered in won't earn the old or new pins if they go by the old book. I also had no idea about the belt loop tracking. I keep track of all those earned by my den but I assumed our advancement person did as well (they use some program to plug awards in online, maybe its like cubtracker or something.)[/quote']

I talked to the manager of our scout store. She said that she will continue to carry the activity pins until next May (2016), I didn't ask her about how long she would carry loops and pins though. We use scouttrack for our tracking and they have said that each den will have the option about which set of requirements they are following. So theoretically, your pack could have a Web 2 patrol doing adventure pins and a Web 2 patrol doing Activity pins.

  7. A boy could always earn Aquanaut without being able to complete the swimming requirement' date=' so long as they "did their best".[/quote']

How? I'm confused. These look like they have to complete the requirements. Am I missing something?

    1. Jump into water over your head. Come to the surface and swim 100 feet, at least half of this using a backstroke.
    2. Stay in the water after the swim and float on your back and your front, and demonstrate survival floating.
    3. Put on a personal floatation device (PFD) that is the right size for you. Make sure it is properly fastened. Wearing the PFD, jump into water over your head. Show how the PFD keeps your head above water by swimming 25 feet. Get out of the water, remove the PFD, and hang it where it will dry.

  8. Yes' date=' if you have a minute :) I know current Webelos I scouts are grandfathered in next program year and can continue with the old book. For the requirements that state earning a belt loop in the current book, do they just do what the belt loop required? I'm slowly doing more research on this and had our current leader for that den asking me this. I told her those joining scouts next program year, in fifth grade for the first time, had to go by the new book. Since she will likely have old scouts and new together wouldn't it be best to use the new book for all? I suggested a den split if she didn't want to, I didn't know of any other way. I hope that makes sense, I looked around on here after posting. Please clarify if I mixed anything up. Its always much appreciated![/quote']

Yes, it they are continuing under the old program and there was a required belt loop, you would complete the requirements for that. Although getting the belt loops would be difficult to get, the scout stores will probably have stock for a while, then ebay if they really wanted the hardware. Belt loops aren't entered in for internet advancement so they would just be tracked by the den leader.

  9. Sadly I missed both airings today due to our timing schedule being thrown off by a few hours (that's what happens when you don't double check ahead of time' date=' lol.) How was it? Our training session went well, I believe, but there were a few things I could not answer (all pertaining to the upcoming Arrow of Light scouts who will be grandfathered in.) I hope I can find some more info on that to pass along![/quote']

As Daped said, not much new, Although they announced the price for the loops as $1.39 and pins are $1.89.

Current Webelos I's can complete the AOL under the existing program next year if you decide to. For new scouts next year they can earn the AOL standalone.

    Any other questions?

  10. So I looked through the preliminary adventure pin requirements and started making a bingo card to translate them to current requirements/loops/stem

I kinda have to say that I like some stuff on the outdoors side of things but some things don't impress me at all like the heroes one and Aquanaut being watered down so that you can get it without actually being able to swim just attempt the test.

I'm looking forward to the propaganda tomorrow convincing us how exciting and awesome the new adventures are.

    What are your thoughts?

  11. I just got my replacement at our last camp out. He ended up being the other one staying up tending the fire with me. We just chatted about me moving on soon and what the job was. It was a natural easy conversation.

    Good luck.

  12. Yes it is a real award, not many get it. IMHO; it is one of those awards outside the core program that are basically stuff you already do as a family. If it were my pack, I would tell them that they order it and you'll sign off on it if they need your signature but being outside the core program, they are responsible for the pins/patches.
