I have always thought if myself as a charter member of the uniform police and if I had such am ASM who did not wear the complete uniform and some scout asked me why he had to wear the uniform and Mr Retired Marine Officer did not, my answer would be swift and to the point. I would say, "When you retire from the Marines as an Officier, I give you my word I will not bug you about how you wear your Boy Scout Uniform, until then, I promise I will bug you to wear it completley." I am not sure where the concept came from that absolutely everybody, everwhere had to be treated exactly the same or nobody had to follow any rule. Life is not fair and the sooner we relaize it, the better we are off and if it takes reired Marine Officers to do it, all I can say is "Semper Fi"

http://www.scouter.com/compass/Where_To_Go/BSA_Camps/ I found this website, its kinda neat,no map but a list bt state of camps. It also has a section, a forum, if you will, that allows others to share in collective wisdom and a cordial exchange of ideas(This message has been edited by oldgreyeagle)

To answer Cambridgeskip's question about the number of Boy Scout Camps "density" I thought it best to spin off a thread rather than hijack basementdweller's thread I live in Bethlehem PA. I am not sure of the distances, I speak more in terms of time. Within two hours of my home I can get to the following BSA Council Camps Trexler Scout Reservation with Cub Scout Camp Achela Land and Settlert Scout Camp, Minsi Trails Council Jonas, PA Camp Minsi, Minsi Trails Council Pocono Summitt PA Camp Tuckahoe, New Birth of Freedom Council Dillsburg PA Camp Ockanickon Bucks County Council Pipersville PA Resica Falls Scout Reservation Cradle Of Liberty Council East Stroudsburg PA Goose Pond Scout Reservation Northeast Pennsylvania Council Lake Ariel PA Camp Achahela Northeast Pennsylvania Council Blakeslee PA Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation Hawk Mountain Council Schuylkill Haven PA there may be others, these are ones I have been to Edited Perhaps I should have incldued Treasure Island Cradle of Liberty Council, Point Pleasant PA, but its not operating anymore as a SUmmer Camp(This message has been edited by oldgreyeagle)

" Is it OK for a hospital to deny treatment, on the basis of religious beliefs, to interracial couples?" It depends... No Hospital can refuse emergency care because of EMTALA. They must provide an exam and stabilizing treatment. If its elective surgery, then a hospital can refuse any service to anyone for any reason. One should note that physicians routinely exclude patients from their practice (Its called a practice since no one knows how to use medicine corretly) Would it be wise? I dont think so, I can't imagine any facilty not providing service to a mixed racial couple just because they were a mixed racial couple but then until I started in this forum I thought stories of how Roman Catholics were perceived by others were overblown statements from long ago. Its been an education that such beliefs still exist

Time to quit because I wasn't trying to insult you and I apparently did. I was tying to express how I felt and it did not come across as well as I wanted it to -

OldGreyEagle replied to Basementdweller's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
hey BasementDweller, how many times do you have to be told that your Wood Badge experience is not the typical experience? You ask if your course was bad, how many times and by how many people do you have to be told that yes, your course was bad? From what you have told us here on the Forum, your Council/District are as a bizzarre collection of numskulls as there is, why would anything they do not reflect that? I remember my "last review" when I took Wood Badge, I handed off my three ring binder to my Ticket Counselor at a District COmmittee meeting and at the next month's meeting, I got it back with a paper to sign. There were no cartwheels, no marching band, what is it you wanted? A big hooplah that you would have then poohed poohed? Your stories frustrate and irritate me because you are not having the same experience in scouting that I enjoy. I liked Wood Badge, I thought it was a great course. Yes, it was material I had seen before in varying forms but I thought the idea of WOod Badge was to give everyone the same information in the same format. Not everyone in the room had seen that information before. Not everyone has the advantage of going to "Management Seminars" that so many complain Wood Badge is "just like", well, if you have never been, you wouldnt know that and I do not think it wise of the BSA to assume that everyone who goes to Wood Badge has management experience because that would be wrong. I thank you for the service you provide to the youth of your community. I am glad you kept at it, I am sorry your experience with District and Council level people is so heinous and am proud to be a member of an organization that inlcudes you -
So, Moosetracker, are you saying that Catholic Hospitals or some catholic hospitals do not care for gay patients? I have to ask specifically because I am not sure I understood what you were/are saying
-
If Catholic Hospitals did not treat Homosexual patients, do you not think someone would have picked up on it and said something by now? To think that a Catholic Hospital would not treat a gay person is incedible. And by the way, they also deliver the babies of "Good Golly" non-married women as well. Patients who have no way of paying for the care they will receive but they are cared for. I know of Catholic Hospitals that ended up closing because the physicians sent the poor and uninsured to them because it was their mission to help the poor. The insured went elsewhere and when the Catholic Hospital closed, it was termed because of "bad management", Yeah, the cream skimming physicians set the hospital up to fail but thats not important. I had thought living your belief system was supposed to be respected, guess not

I understand TT, but how did Prohibition work out? -
SO, if St Judes Children Hospitals in Memphis get federal dollars (and they do) does that mean they will have to provide Cancer treatment for my mothers breast cancer? Can I go to Sloan Kettering (Another place that gets Federal DOllars) for Obstetrical care for my daughter in law who is Cancer Free

Do we need scout camps?
OldGreyEagle replied to Basementdweller's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I am still working on "unpaid volunteer", are there paid volunteers because if there are, where do I apply? -
I am surprised that no one has said, if you dont like how Catholic hospitals deliver services, then why don't you start a hospital of your own and offer services you want
-
After everything you have told us about your DE including the FTE form, you believe him about this?

So, in the thread about the scout using donated funds to buy food for the workers of his Eagle Project the only comment I had was to be sure he had the proper forms filled out for any discount or free food he may collect. Why does that comment demand an explanation for what I said here? I don't see the connection Its a BSA trainin event, everyone there is giving of time and effort, why should one side (faculty) be treated any different than the other side (students). Both sides are volunteers. I thought the trainig of others, the passing along of knowledge I received from another, was a way of paying it forward. Moosetracker, its called hyperbole
-
So,the guys who are giving of their time to do the training are so much more valuable to the Council that these members of the Good Ole Boys Club, these important guys are exempt from paying their own way and the people taking the training are the ones, who due to their lack of training, must not only pay for themselves, they must also pay for the instructors who are being so kind that they are spending their valuable time with the great ignorant unwashed Yeah, that sounds like the the proper culture we need to encourage

Well, I always thought Xenophobia had it's valid arguments... BTW Xenophobia is not an unreasonable fear of Warrior Princesses

"It should be based on what is right." The question, of course, is who gets to determine what is "right" ? I am reminded of an early exchange here on the forums many years ago. For some reason I quoted a line from Jesus Christ Superstar that applies here. Jesus tells Pontius Pilate he is looking for truth, Pilate responds, "What is truth? Is truth unchanging law? We both have truths, are mine the same as yours? Now, last time I posted that I was accused of being a Liberal and the reason Western Civilization would rot and collapse. From quoting a Tim Rice/Andrew LLoyd Webber lyric? I thought not but who knows? Everything is relative, as far as we know Karl Marx may have had friends that thought he was just to conservative and right leaning and his work didnt go far enough. Having respect for others may be easy to say, much more difficult to live. (This message has been edited by oldgreyeagle)

Penn is one of the most vehement evangelical atheists there is. It's not surprising he would have no use for the BSA or scouting. He has a right to his opinions and we ours, it may not be necesssary for either side to change

Pets merit badge question (and merit badges in general)
OldGreyEagle replied to MichelleP's topic in Advancement Resources
I can see the young scout, his name just has to be Andy Hardy as he rallies his fellow scouts with the cry, Hey kids, let's put on a pet show! Brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it... -
I don't know if this plays into the other thread, but does anybody remember what Willie SUtton said? back when Bank Robbers were national figures? When asked why Wille robbed banks, he suppsoedly replied, "Because that's where the money is" One could easily paraphase that to sex abuse in children. Why are there sexual predators in the BSA? Because thats where the boys are. It works for any area. Vigillance is the only option (WHich I guess doesnt make it such an option, does it?) that we have

OK, this is not scouting related, but I need some opinions from trustworthy people. I was talking to a group of people about the Cruise ship that ran aground the captains subsequent actions. Someone wondered aloud where they found this guy and I said, "He must have graduated from the "Capt Joe Hazelwood School of Mariner Science", dead silence, no one did anythinf but look at me like I had grown a third eye. These were not kids you understand. So, how many of you think my comment was funny without having to look up anything? Just wondering...

Remember, the Duke Lacrosse Scandal fell apart because the case fell apart because people lied. Not the alleged perps, in this case, they were not the ones lying. It was the accuser and the prosecuting attorney who lied. -

Hey Pack, I have always thought Twilight was the best time to watch wild animals. At Twilight time they seem to be more relaxed and you can see them in their natural habitat even if the twilight does make it harder to see. I thought the Platters made a great homage to Twilight Heavenly shades of night are falling It's twilight time Out of the mist your voice is calling It's twilight time When purple colored curtains Mark the end of the day I hear you my dear at twilight time Deepening shadows gather splendor As day is done Fingers of night will soon surrender The setting sun I count the moments darling Till you're here with me Together at last at twilight time Here in the after-glow of day We keep our rendez-vous beneath the blue Here in the sweet and same old way I fall in love again as I did then Deep in the dark your kiss will thrill me Like days of old Lighting the spark of love that fills me With dreams untold Each day I pray for evening just To be with you Together at last at twilight time Together at last at twilight time I just hope I have enough wooden stakes handy to handle all the vampires... -
