  1. For the Bobcat Badge... it states the requirments are for the boy to "Learn and Say" the Cub Scout Promise, and to "Say" the Cub Scout Motto, and Law of the Pack, and to "Tell" what Webelos means. We have a disagreement with DL's. Does that mean that the boy must MEMORIZE it (with helpful promting), or enough that he repeats it outlound. I know that boy needs to go over what it MEANS with his parent, and lets assume for this discussion that this discussion with parent has been completed.
  2. I would have a tot lot for those age 5 and under. Those 6 and up... siblings that are girls... can form their own "Little Sister Den", and do the same rotations as the boy dens. It's hard to put a 7 yr old girl with a 2-3 yr. old for activities... when 8 or 9 yr. old brother is doing the cool stuff with mom or dad. Tot Lot and "little sister" den was free while parent volunteered.
  3. As you are working things out, I would also consider diversifying your committee. Take it from me... a few years ago I was a DL in a pack where the CC and the ACM were married, and the CM and the Treasurer were married. It was an oligarchy where they ruled over all... and some very raw feelings came out, and took a couple of years for things to straigten out....
  4. I joined a "non-traditional" pack about a year ago. My son's Tiger den leader quit on us mid-March, and I volunteered to take over as DL. Just like you I was both a cub and boy scout... so it was frustrating. I thought I could help make some changes, but there was resistance from the day that I arrived. Eventually I was ignored and no longer asked to volunteer. My den was the most active, did our own mini-campouts, service projects.... Really... before you get too far in... Go visit some other Packs in your area... if they look better.. transfer. You are in it for your son,
  5. Conservation Good Turn Award for Cub Scouts http://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Conservation_Good_Turn_Award (This message has been edited by westcoastscouter)
  6. I think that your comments as a "new cub parent" is completely invaluable. I was also a cub and boy scout (AOL as cub & a Star as a BS). I took over my son's Tiger Cub Den in May of last year after our previous DL had to relocate to another state. So I also volunteered to be our recruitment chair. What we did was a Raingutter Regatta -- and while the potential recruit boys were detailing their boats (already put together by volunteers), we were able to speak with the new parents and introduce them to the Den Leaders and Cub Master. The idea is... keep the boys busy doing somethin
  7. My Wolf Den, and another Wolf Den together, (18 boys) are going to be doing a conservation project at a Regional County Park.. planting native trees... pulling out invasive weeds, cleaning up the nature trail in a nature walk area of the park. My Cubmaster has declinded to partisipate with the overall pack. (We have 60 boys in our Pack) Can the Wolves in our two Dens earn their Conservation Good Turn Award? or is it merely a Pack award ? One of the project ideas per the requirements is: "As a den or pack, adopt a park and keep it clean." So that leads me to think that it can be e
  8. There is some thought that this is a Unit award (so only a Pack?) I will be taking my Den of Wolves and the other Wolf Den (Total of abou 18 boys plus their parents) to a Regional Park where we will plant native trees, pull out invasive weeds, and clean up the trail in the Nature Walk area of the park. Our Cubmaster declined to make this a Pack event... told us to do it on our own if we wanted to. Can our Den still earn the Conservation Good Turn Award ? or is it only available if its a "Pack" event?
  9. While I dont give out patches for every event... I think that special events can be recognized with a simple fun patch. I make sure the boys understand that these are merely partisipation patches that go on their vests. I keep encouraging them, and their parents, to keep working on their Wolf Badge by usuing a Cub Scout chart to track their progress. The Boys do keep an eye on the chart to see how everyone is doing, and who is next closest to earn their badge. The point is to allow the boys to have fun, let them work together, and for them to grow. If a 2 inch patch helps, then so be
  10. Den Leader award states that during your tenure for this award, participate in a Cub Scout leader pow wow or University of Scouting, or attend at least four roundtables. I recently completed Wood Badge, and now working on my ticket. Does Wood Badge count ?
  11. UPDATE FROM POSTING MEMBER: TO: EVERYONE THAT REPLIED Thanks for your help, and to answer questions. He is probably in his early 60s, so not that old. Issues was whether Webelos who bridge over to a troop can almost immediately attend a MB Pow Wow. His opinion was that they could not... they needed to be 1st Class first. (Because only at 1st class could a scout earn a MB) Our MB Pow Wow Organizer who is a District Committee member disagrees and says any scout can attend, so long he is official. (registered, in troop, ect ect.)
  12. My DE told me today that a scout must have earned his 1st Class Rank before he can earn any MB's. This cant be correct... can it? I thought a scout can get a Blue Card, and start right away... correct? Any official reference would be helpful.
  13. I have an old - 1960's canvas tent... two man. Belonged to my late father who camped in in during the 60's and 70's. I used it as a scout in the 80's. So its been discovered... needs a little rehab. (1) Needs some new zippers, and (2) Some cleaning... How ??? tailor for zippers, ? and the cleaning? how to clean ?? Anybody got some good ideas...
  14. THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR ANSWERING THIS QUESTION... AND MAKING IT SOMEWHAT MORE DIFFICULT THAN I WANTED IT TO BE !! HA HA HAAA...!! Long and short.. in my situation, the boy will be well over 10.5 yrs old come December, which is when he antisipates finishing his AOL. He simply had asked me if he could bridge earlier than our AOL ceremony in Feb. His older brother is in a BS Troop, and we've done some joint camping with them... a visit so to speak. He loved it so much that he wants to go ASAP. (But the min. 6 months will put him into early December) So I've told him that he is elig
  15. I've been told that to give a Bear or Webelos their Whitling Chit training that you need to have taken the BALOO training. Is this correct? If yes, where can I find this in BSA rules? Thanks !!
  16. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR ADVICE: WE ARE GOING A RAINGUTTER REGATTA.. DISTRICT DID HELP US WITH FLYERS AND HOW TO SEND THEM OUT. WILL BE A GREAT EVENT... THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR ADVICE.
  17. I have a boy that is a W-2 and almost finished with his AOL. Can he join/bridge to a troop as soon as he gets his AOL, or is there a minimum time as a W-2 that he must have ?? He is eager to leave our pack and join our feeder troop.
  18. I need help finding a very very simple skit for tiger cubs... who probably wont be able to memorize words, ect... their first skit... So I want to keep it simple.. (did I say that already?!) :0) Any help would be much appreciated... --JT
  19. I am a den leader, and our pack CM and CC have decided not to do a recruitment this year... for reasons I dont want to get into.. would take too long... So the Tiger, Wolf, and Bear leaders want to do our own recruitment event... Any suggestions for an event ?? Please help us brainstorm some ideas that boys might like to come to, to then join our pack ? Thanks !!
  20. THANK YOU... for all your Responces.... Our Pack has decided to to the AOL ceremony and bridging on a Thur. night in late February... We contacted local troops and they agree that this would be the best time for them (the troops).
  21. When is the best time for a W2 to bridge to a BS Troop? I know you can bridge after six months after completing fourth grade. (About December for most boys) This might be a tad early for most boys...but I know that boys are not all the same. What would be ideal? Feb. or March? Is April too soon??
  22. I am a new cub DL. I purchased my uniform and the only knot I have earned is the AOL. I also placed a 3 yr, yellow backed, service pin and a 4 yr., green backed. scout service pin. At a pack campout the following week, our CM teased me about the knot and pins in front of other parents. As if I was being egotistical for having even one knot. Then I attended some meetings and saw many leaders with their knots and service pins. One gentleman had a 50 yr service pin !! I realized that this CM was a jackass, and probably jeleous that he had not dedicated himself to a level to be
  23. I think that it is important to remember that boys don't partisipate in scouting to get awards. Boys partisipate in scouting to have fun and to grow into young men.... and we reward them for doing that.
  24. Our Pack has got its first visit from a UC in several YEARS... and only after complaints about how the pack was running things were made to the council. From what I've seen they are kindly old gentlemen who like to put on their uniforms and God bless their hearts they try... I did a training where an elderly scouter tried to demonstrate how to assemble a tent, use a camp stove, and was so confused with his own equipment... I hate to say it but probably best to retire some UC vs. having those that are unable to drive at night.
  25. At the kid festival coming up next month at the local park, we are going to have a recruitment booth sponsered by the District. We want some activity for boys that will walk up to do.... Pinewood Derby Track is probably tooooo long... per park staff. Any other ideas to give prospective boys something to do, to encourage parents to sign them up ??
