  1. A Scout wants to work on Sports MB and one requirement is to do TWO sports and also discuss with counselor. Boy just finished Football Season and Basketball League is about to start. Does he have to wait for his Blue Card to work on this MB? He was a registered Scout during football season. Or does he have to wait until next year and have his blue card during his actual season?

  2. We are working on our district JTE, and in looking at our unit's rosters there are many "N" by leaders' names as to whether they are trained or not. However, their training history on myscouting.org seem to have all the required training. So why the "N" ??

So to be a SM ASM. CM. ACM. DL. ADL. CC. COR. What precisely is the required training to get a "Y" ??

YPT plus what else per the above positions??

  3. For clarification to one of the posts. The boy just completed his "Tiger" year in kindergarten. Would be potentially starting wolves as a first grader.

??? Greater issue, and what I invite comment on is more as what to do with the father who intentionally lied.

I agree that the boy should do tiger again with boys his own age.

  4. A local den leader was found out to have lied on his second son's registration form by claiming on the form that his son was in first grade, when in fact boy was in Kindsrgarten (and age 6).

This den leader is on his second pack, after issues with a prior pack which included rude and confrontational behavior, and rude comments about others. It is believedhe did this so his sons would be closer in age in the pack....( not having to have his second son have to wait)

What can and should be done?

  5. I was at a cub resident camp and some scouts hade these home made denner, and den chief cords. They were thicker, longer and better quality than the ones at scout store. Has anyone see. These, or made them? Or know how to make them? I wish I asked the pack where they got them.

  6. Just wanted to see if anyone here has any expertise with Coleman fuel - Coleman lanterns...

I've had this coleman fuel lantern for about 20 years now. I've never had any problems with it before. Last night at my campsite I noticed that the mantle was badly ripped, and so I placed a replacement on, burned it white, and then re-assembled the unit. Pumped it, and then let it... but I'm getting a high flame coming out, and it's more a yellow glow then I've seen in the past from it. If I adjust the dial down, then the over flame goes away, but it is just not as bright in the past.

It appears that too much fueled air is coming out... and its' flaming out the mantle holes. It's a century brand mantle, not a Coleman brand mantle.

    Any thoughts ?

  7. Also keep in mind whether the manufacturer is going to warranty the tent for life. If a pole bends, or a tent rips... will the manufacturer provide a lifetime warranty...??

I like the Eureka Apex 3XT, and Eureka Tetragon series

The Kelty Gunnison series is a classic, and I own one.

Also the Kelty Trail Ridge series.

Also, figure out if you want full coverage tents in case of rain, and do you want a vestibule to store items? Do you get a lot of dew in the morning, so you want to keep your items in the vestibule and dry ?

These above would be my recommendations...

  8. I have a group of Webelos that will be bridging next year, and I have begun with my asst. den leader to visit some of the local troops to get a feel of how they are run.

So far I've noticed two philosphies as to "boy run troop". For example we visited two troops' Court of Honors to see how they are conducted and to compare them.

The first, I'll call them Troop 1, was 90% set up when we got there 10 minutes early. The Scoutmaster was using more of a Socratic method is getting the boys to complete teh set up... such as, "ok Billy... you have all the chairs up, but where are the SM, ASM, and SPL going to sit?" Then Billy would remember and get the boys to put up chairs. "Johnny, the ice cream for afterwards... how will it be if it sits out for the next hour on the table? do you think it will melt?" Johnny puts it back in kitchen freezer. This SM tells me that their philosophy is that in his 10 yrs of experience that boys need a lot of proding, and encouragement, and guidance, but that they have the boys make their own decisions, plan their own activities, with adult assistance.

The ceremony has the patrols sitting together, one in each row. The SPL begins the meeting, and appears to have cue cards to assit him. The only roll by the SM is to hand out the rank advancements, and to say some kind words about each boy that has earned a badge. Afterwards is an ice cream social and families socialize, and several leaders come up to me and my ADL to introduce themselves, tell us why they chose this troop, and that to please bring our boys to visit them sometime. The leaders of Troop 1 are former scouts.

The second troop, I'll call them Troop 2, is also run by former scouts. Their leadership takes a complete hands off philosphy. The SM tells me that they are completely boy run, and he wants them to do it all themselves, and will only occassionally suggestions.

At the CoH, the room is about 20% set up when we get there 10 minutes early, and there is only one scout and the SM present. The SM stands in the back of the room the entire time. The scouts are spread out throughout the room, sitting with their parents at the school cafeteria tables. The awards were handed out by the SPL with little to no fanfare... At the conclusion of the meeting, most of the boys left within 5 minutes. No leaders came to speak to my ADL or myself.

We later approached the SM, and asked him about the meeting. He quickly told us that Boy Scouts is not Webelos III's, and boys need to be completely in charge, even if the meetings are disorganized and the SPL and ASPL struggle through it, and they will learn from it.

Both of these troops consider themselves "boy lead" troops. One is completely hands off, while the other has a "boy lead - adult guided"....

So my question for discussion... Are they both boy lead? Is either of them doing it wrong ? How much adult involement should be taking place, while still being "boy lead?"

Futher note: Troop 1 is almost twice as big as Troop 2, and routinely will attract 80% of the Webelos around the area to join them, and tranfers from other Troops... Are they allowing too much adult partisipation?(This message has been edited by westcoastscouter)

  9. Just received my Northface pants. The fit is great, the color is just pretty much right on, and they zip off just at or just below the knee.

I wish the official pants would have fit, but after all different sizes and styles I had to get these.

  10. Went to Walmart to look at the Dickies... the are similar to carpenter work pants, and very heavy.

Gandermountain.com has their North Face Paramount pants - the New Taupe Green color for $45.50 so I ordered a pair. I'll let everyone know how they fit. REI and other sites list them at $75.

  11. UPDATE FROM ORIGINAL POSTER:

To answer some of the questions that have come up as to what happened.

There was prior alcohol use by this pack when I was there. At a scout campground. The ACM called his group of drinking friends the RED CUP CLUB, but bottles of wine, cocktail mixers were about. Drinking was primarily by a ACM, who later became CM for one year, and his close friends. About 7 months later there was a campout at a "Ranch" and there were open beers, wine bottles, ect around the campfire in the morning, left the from night before. This ACM - CM was up till midnight loud around the fire again with his friends. The current CM was there seeing it all over the last few years.

Yes, it was previously reported to the council, but unknown what resulted from it.

Yes, I have now reported it to my unit commissioner who said that he would report it to our council exec.

Once it gets reported again, I dont know what will occur from it.

The Charter (a church) is completely uninvolved. The COR is a signature person only, who previously said "Do whatever you want and I'll sign it".

Hence the reasons why a number of us transfered out of this pack to begin with.

  12. To add on some info that was missing:

Two years ago it was reported in writing to the DE and the CE about the alcohol use... I dont know if anything became of it or not. Now two years later I hear that it's still going on. There has been ill feelings between the two packs over the last two years. Thus my question on is it worth it to report, ot does it appear to be petty on our part to report it to the CE. (no DE right now)

  13. I have a new family that transfered in from another local Pack. The parent reports that this pack allowed open use of alchol at events, and that she did not approve. Also, due to other issues regarding program, ect. she decided to transfer her son out.

I actually used to belong to this former pack two years ago, before I and 8 other families also transfered out. There was alchol use at campouts, ect. back then as well. There as been bad feelings between our two packs since then.

Is this something I should report, or will it be seen as a malcontent ?

  14. I've tried on every type of scouter pants at our local scout store, but either the cut is bad for me, or material is not great, ect.

Has anyone found a pair of pants that is a match in color for "official" pants, and fits well ? I am looking for cargo/outdoor wear.
