  1. Well MARK S it seems like I have you beat by $1.50. I'm talking about instruction ie., history, and the knowledge about what makes it work. In addition to the components which the leaders will wire to a board and the earphone and the ground rod. I'm talking a working rig here. All for a buck and a half less than that kit. BTW I wish all you hams(my brother in law included) would get together and share knowledge with the cubs. Why, with all the hams who really understand the process and theory, aren't 95% of all cubs in America doing this elective. And the east coast is great ran
  2. Quick survey: How much does it cost to go to Pow Wow in your council? Do they charge extra for any craft type classes that you may wish to take that could require extra materials? For those of you that are Den leaders, If you could attend a Crystal radio class(bear elective 3) and you actually made a radio that worked and were offered the knowledge to teach the boys would all that be worth $8 to you? Thank you in advance for your reply.
  3. I quess my light weight MSR missing link tent is taboo as it is orange. Maybe if the US Gov adopts the LNT guidelines then the ACLU will sue on behalf of my choice of color. No justice No Peace!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let's all pile in the back of my VW bus and drive up to the "LOVE IN" HO HO HO CHI MIHN the NLF is gonna win! oops wrong war.
  4. For firearms, The last I checked, You had to be an NRA instructor CERTIFIED in the discipline that you were instructing. That is if you shot a .22 rifle with the boys you had to be an instructor for rifles. Shotgunning same . Muzzleloading same. I've spent a lot of trigger time and I have yet to meet a person who is certified in all three implements. 50 years ago we had more youth involved in shooting sports and no school shootings and much less crime. Real progress on that front. Today Johnny sits in the dark of his room playing "Grand Theft Auto" on the video and Mama buys him a $200
  5. This reg is bad. 2 deep and six kids that is the limit. "Sorry you can't take a whole patrol camping in the Eastern High Peaks 'cause somebody else ruined it for you." Can 2 adults and a full patrol of 8 boys cause less of an impact than 8 slobs? Why did the APA allow for a 250' cell tower in Lake George? Some folks call it "Frankenpine" (it will be a monster cell tower dressed like a fake pine tree). Which will cause a greater impact? How did the APA arrive at the number of 8? The reg is bad. Stick to areas outside of the High Peaks. Anybody want to see selecti
  6. Last year my son broke the record for the 4th grade 800 yard run by 16 seconds. On a pack of family camping trip my son pitches his own tent, arranges his gear and is self sufficient. When meeting new adults or kids he extends his hand looks people in the face and says hello. He holds doors for those less physically able than himself. He gets great grades in school, plays LL baseball, travel soccor, swims at the YMCA, runs on a school 5k team, obviously in Scouts If every kid in America was like him we'd be going to geekhell in a handbasket. As a leader, some may
  7. I don't know what planet you live on but Scouting is a positive thing in Castleton NY. The politicians in our county are crooks but we have a great Scouting program and you are always welcome to join. Do all the helpers in your pack look like they straggled in from the Little Big Horn full of arrows in the back?(no offense meant to the native folks that were being exterminated at the time, IF THEY ONLY HAD COMPOUND BOWS!) Is the COR waiting for three pages of violations??????? Run, Run very fast. Grab your kid up as fast as you can, sometimes spectators get hurt watchin' gun fig
  8. You just about have them all. There is similar thread on the Woodbadge forum right now. Three beliefs beyond the Scout oath and law are required. 1> Your son and my son deserve a Trained leader. Let us do EVERYTHING in our power to get ALL the leaders and all committee members trained. Have every parent take youth protection online. That Wolf Cub is only going to be 8 for one year, let's give him a year he'll remember forever. He'll turn around and give your grandson something following your example( good or bad) 2> If you say you are going to take charge of something an
  9. I too live near smAlbany, I'ts not real far but what about Camp Henderson and Cooperstown. BB hall of fame, farmers museum, Fenimore Museum. We took the Cubs there overnight and they loved it . Henderson folks were very nice.
  10. I'm from New York, the state of confusion, I can only offer a suggestion on looking overseas. Most universities have a service fraternity that is gennerally composed of former Scouts. The local college RPI has scouts from Thailand, Russian and other places. I could not get somebody to help with my diversity goal but your actual mileage may vary. Good Luck.
  11. My wife went to a seminar(she is a speech teacher) about raising kids today and fitness. The speaker said one sentence that said it all TODAY'S KIDS DON"T HAVE SCABS Any normal kids in my rural neighborhood had more scabs and scars than you could count. It was seen as part of growing up. Now only the "skaters" have scabs and the last I check skateboarding was not an aerobic activity. Before you all defend your skateboading kids let me say I can't ride a skate board and never could. Those kids have great balance. Kids just aren't outside enough to get one scrape a day.
  12. Hey Cody did you enjoy Happy Land? We had Webelos Woods near Lake George N.Y. this weekend. We slept in three sided lean-tos and woke to a 1/2 inch of slushy snow. Webelos were fine. What animal/patrol were you in ? Was it all you hoped for?
  13. Sam McGee was from Tennessee We read this to cub Scouts when we do family cabin camping in January I hope you fair better in Tennessee Here's what Robert W. Service thought when he went to Alaska The Cremation of Sam McGee by Robert W. Service Robert W. Service, a Canadian poet and novelist, was known for his ballads of the Yukon. He wrote this narrative poem which is presented here because it is an outstanding example of how sensory stimuli are emphasized and it has a surprise ending. Robert William Service was born in Preston, England, on January 16, 1874. He
  14. I have only been to Nashville as a child and I swear it was 104 degress in the shade that day. I have also been to Norway(above the Arctic Circle, twice), Minnesota in late December, and upstate NY in winter all with many nights in a sleeping bag. Here's some tips: 1.)The prior mentioned fleece is a great tip WD! And probably all you'll need in addition to the hat. 2.) do folks have watch caps or winter hats in Tenn.? If so, wear one to bed, you'll have hat head but you'll be warm. 3.) Eat something before you turn in. your body will burn that fuel while you sleep.
  15. This seems to be the place where the most experienced folks hang oout so I hope you'll indulge me. Does anybody have a copy of the old Boy's life reprint for canoeing? It reportedly had plans for a kayak in there. I recently purchased one of those and I'd like to find out more about it. What weight will it carry? How is the canvas applied? How is the canvas treated? Please email me through my user account. Thank you.
  16. I proofread this morning. I don't know how the little blue face got there. It's supposed to be a parenthesis(
  17. Background: Last year our pack had a picnic at Thatcher Park near Albany, NY. One event was a compass exercise where boys were given an azimuth to follow with a silva type compass. If the boy finds the right direction some treats were located just out of sight in a treeline. We matched up second year Webelos with soon to be Tigers who were having their first Scouting event. The boys had fun . The Webelos liked leading. Last pack meeting: The kindergarten boy that my Weeb son was matched up with is now a Tiger Cub. Orange Necker and all. That tiger cub was telling his friend ab
  18. Thank you for the reference. Wow, I worked 18 months less 7 days for a pair of WUSS badge beads. This old course, new Course BS is just that. Sounds like a bunch of old Veterans cussin' about today's armed forces. I took the only wood Badge course that was offered. I'll not listen to those who say I got off easy. I just seems to me that there might be a shortage of course staffers. By the effective date we'll have had about 110 attendees and 40 some staff. Considering all WB's are not fit to be staff and all staff cannot be expected to serve as staff over and over. I looks a
  19. Let me clarify this with a question. If Bill Hillcourt were alive today, after 2006 he could not staff a WB Course? Sounds like the minority (21st Century) will be the only ones eligible to staff, whilst the majority("old WB receipients) and most experienced are no longer qualified??? Do you have a link for this or can you tell us which publication this is from so you can site this chapter and verse? Thank you.
  20. In Phase three of the new Shady Pines developement,if you are the only eight year old to be carrying a pocket knife and your mother knows it; you might be a cub scout If alka selter tablets and a fuji film container is your idea of a "hot time " on a Friday night..you might be a Cub Scout. If you think your Den Chief can do just about everything your Dad is capable of...you might be a Cub Scout. If you stop to have an imaginary light saber battle during craft activities...you might be a Cub Scout. If you can remember every Neopet character's name and skils ablities but a
  21. Time for a lighter topic. Doing a take-off on the Jeff Foxwothy Redneck saying here goes: If you hear a boy arguing about whether the gadget on his crystal radio is a diode or a variable capacitor, then he might be a cub Scout. If you hear a 10 year old boy tell his mother, "I'm not afraid to go campout in the woods Mom, I'm a man. Then he might be a Cub Scout. Anybody got anymore?
  22. My son will be working with his uncle(I think it is N2USM ) on that day. Anybody else going to be there? What frequency or type of radio will you use?
  23. This year we are going to plan a workshop to rough out the cars for the boy. The ultimate crime in cub scouts is to see the boys that actually work on their car see the cars that were built by men. The next year those parents with distraught boys use any means they can to get their boys car to go faster. The problem feeds on itself. I HAVE NO GOOD SOLUTION. There have been good suggestions by many here. Our "Outlaw" class has no restriction. One year I wrapped the block with duct tape and four POUNDS of lead bars(I called it "just plain ugly") I thought it would fly right t
  24. I agree, Scoutnut, kind of like when the newsman on TV says, "the man then fell out of the window onto a CEMENT slab" Most journalist can't talk no good english.
  25. I had a link for a disected first class badge to teach the parts of the badge. Now that I need it the link is no longer active. I wanted to have the boys glue the parts to a manila folder backer and be able to explain and then lay out the parts. I can make my own but if one already exists on the web that google hasn't found please let me know. Thank you in advance for any help rendered.
