  1. Have you ever tried a behind the back knot relay. Tying the two-half-hitches or tautline behind the back or blindfolded tests someone's proficiency and adaptibility.
  2. Everyone, where you are, stand up and clap for Pioneer DC. Even in front of your computer. He just hit the nail on the head. TOlerant homosexual activists are oxymorons. It's sad that so many people misconstrue tolerance as letting everyone do whatever they want. It'll be a sad day when this definition comes to pass.
  3. Well thanks, it's nice to hear someone from another part of the country think so.
  4. I don't know Gary personally, but I have heard of Troop 621. Also living close to Weyauwega, it's nice to hear about a local boy who made good.
  5. With that list of famous homosexuals of old, you have to take it with a grain of salt. With most, there's no concrete proof that many of them were, just inferences drawn by their writings or the often biased writings of others.
  6. Or, as a leader I know once said, it's the three W's....work, wheels, women.
  7. It's sad that it has come to this, when so many people mistake "freedom of religion" for "freedom from religion." If the BSA allows them, I'm gone.
  8. Chippewa29, I have not been able to find this elaborated upon in many BSA documents, but there is a thing as the College Scouter Reserve. This is where College Scouts can keep registration in their own council and lodge throughout their college years without needing to transfer. Check your OA Handbook. There should be something about it in there. That way your friend who goes to Yale will not need to change flaps.
  9. I would like to point out that you are a youth member in the OA until 21 anyway, not just if you join a Venture Crew. Your wording is just a bit confusing.
  10. I've seen palms given out at Eagle Courts of Honor before. So it's been done.
  11. Yep, our lodge's names are based on the Menomanie totemic system. Good old Awase 61.
  12. I do agree with the things said here, but will add that it is through heating that metal becomes stronger. Hopefully it will be the same here.
  13. It works especially well with Scout Vespers or similar songs.
  14. Here's a good one an old commissioner friend of mine once gave me...not sure who wrote it. At Days End Is anybody happier because you Passed his way? Does anyone remember that you spoke to him today? The day is almost over, and its Toiling time is through; Is there anyone to utter now a kindly word of you? Can you say tonight, in parting, With the day thats slipping fast, That you helped a single brother Of the many that you passed? Is a single heart rejoicing over What you did or said; Does the man whose hopes were Fading, now with courage,
  15. I would like to point out this and then I shall leave this thread. Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution. The famous "necessary and proper" clause. In the past has been used to defend things that were in the gray area constitutionally. Maybe the government thinks that extra support of the Boy Scouts is proper. That would destroy all Constitutional issues related to it.
  16. There are strange things done in the midnight sun by the men who moil for gold....Gotta love Sam McGee. The Raven by Poe The Road less traveled by Frost Some poetry by walt whitman, possibly The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls or somesuch thing.
  17. An excellent program and a lot of helpful older boys help too. For their first outing with the Boy Scouts, take them somewhere exciting. We took ours on a caving trip into a small "kiddie" cave for a weekend. Lots of fun, something they never did before, and voila, hooked boys.
  18. The Unitarian Universalists may be "sleighted" by the BSA, but that does not stop a Unitarian Universalist minister that I know from being a Scoutmaster, Commissioner, District Committee Member, and camp staffer.
  19. I would like to point out, however, for the sake of history, that one of the reasons the Pope did not grant the divorce was because Catherine of Aragon was the daughter of the King of Aragon (part of modern-day Spain), a major supporter of Catholicism. Granting the divorce would not have been the smartest move.
  20. Our troop's Venture patrol (informal as it is) does not run many "high adventure" trips by itself. While they do climb and sea-kayak and whatnot, they also have regular outings separated from the younger Scouts. Just going and canoeing around for a weekend. Sometimes a local SCUBA shop has a SCUBA training session, and we'll get trained in SCUBA. Just getting separated from the others is sometimes the purpose of a Venture patrol.
  21. I agree. The community strips were a nice addition to the uniform. While council pride might be nice, I think that pride in the community should come first. The community strips are a great way to encourage this.
  22. As our troop's old Scoutmaster used to say, the reasons that Scouts leave during high school are the three W's--work, wheels, women.
  23. I'm not sure how much of an "option" this is, but ask the pastor if you could go in on a Sunday and recruit some leaders. Ask for an announcement and be standing outside, or do some arrangement like that. If leaders is what you want, chances are you'll get a few. If Scouts is what you want, chances are you'll get a few of them too.
