  1. Push ups are not meant to hurt. If you do them right and be cautious how often you dish them out, then it can be a very effective method.

Remember the part "to keep myself physically Strong"

This is one method of building upper body strength. If you take it easy and not use it for every infration, or adjust the push up count to the severity, then it can be a form of constructive training.

Trust me I learned my lessons after having to do many push-ups.

  2. I can see where a parent might be concerned. But there are time that they need to understand that we are not rookies at this.

This past weekend we had a district camporee. There were tornado warnings for the neighboring counties. Of course we were all under severe thunderstorm watches. Yes it rained pretty hard on friday night.

We also had one person that had a police scanner with all the Emergency MGT frequencies and Weather Frequencies. He also had a lightbar on top of his truck (Yellow). When the SM's checked in they were advised that if he was driving up and down the road with his lights on, and sounding the horn in sets of 3 then everyone was to react for a tornado.

When we go camping next month, I already know what our plan is going to be, because I am familiar with the Council site. There is a nice concrete bath house that will be substantial shelter. If there is any doubt there is a small ravine (big Ditch) that will fit all of the pack in it.

When all of the boys are in camp, we will go over these in a quick briefing so that everyone is aware of the locations.

A little pre-plan and training should be enough. If the father wants to buy you a lightening detector, fine. Get there and just set it on top of the chuck box.

  3. I would have to say that I am fortunatewhen it comes to cub behavior. The parents in my pack also support me when it comes to the cubs running around and when they need to behave.

    Here are some examples:

We were at a district Veterens day campout. Not very big attendance, but when it was about 9pm, I told the boys that it was time for lights out. and yes I Even sent my boy to bed. The boys had some protest but the parents were heard saying that if Cubmaster Chris said that it is time for bed then lets go. A nearby pack could not understand that it worked that easy, but i told them that it was good with parent support and an across the board standard. All the boys went to bed.

Another time we were at a day camp and I told the boys to quit running around like they had lost their mind. The parents coralled them up and we had a small group game.

I think that if the boys are running around, yes the parents have the initial responsibility, but leaders also have a responsibility. But it ultimatly falls on the parents. If they were my boys and the parents were not helping to keep things in line then I would question bringing them on campouts, just because things like ScoutMom said could happen. I would hate to be a leader and have a boy who is seriously injured while on my watch.

I grew up in Maine and I know what it is you are talkin about. When I tell people about that I am from up that way they are always askin "Did you ever go to boston" I tell them that it was only an hour away and that we went there all the time.

But anyway, I know what you mean by 3 hours until something substanncial (sp).

I like the idea of another High Adventure base around the east coast. I cannot afford to go to Philmont. Although it is soemthing that I aspire to do with my son when he is old enough. But if there was something along those lines local to the east coast that we can get some of the same experiences. Not to mention a local national training center. I am unable to take 10-14 days off to go out to teh NTC at philmont and I really cannot afford all those costs. If there was one here on the east coast it would probably be used at a decent rate.

  5. Check with you local Lowes. They may have some of the build and grow kits left over that you can get. Who knows, they may even gove you some hammers and goggles too. That is what our local one did. It all worked out great.

That can be a good craft. For the games, go to the www.macscouter.com they have the Big Book of games. There are a lot of outdoor games there.

As for your conservation project, ask the park ranger or campsite manager. They should know of a few things that need to be done that the boys can do.

  6. Well I have looked into several different things and I was talking with our CC and we looked for something on the WEB. We found one of those programs that dials your list of numbers and gives a message. The one that we found was free and after he makes some modifications to his computer my CC will be sending out practice messages to me and him.

IF it works out as good as we hope, I will see about posting a link to the download.

  7. This is truely a tragic incident. I hope the families are able to get through the best that they can.

Lets look at this in one aspect. The alcohol based hand cleaner IS Flamable. There have been many incidents to prove this, and this is one of them. I disagree with the constant use of the hand sanitizer. It not only kills the bad germs but it also kills the ones that we need. When the hand sanitizer came out, it was not meant to replace hand washing totally, but it was meant as a TEMPORARY fix to an immediate need. I think that we should all promote the use of soap and water to wash our hand. It worked for decades. I mean there is nothing wrong with meeeeeeee eeee ee e. Except for that slight tick (just kidding)

Boys will be boys. They love to play with fire, throw things, and break stuff. This event was a tragedy. Instead of completely damaging this young mans life, who will have to live with this already, look at it as he is now a good person to try to use as a fire safety instructor if he is able to handle it mentally. Learn from this event, and lets find out how we can prevent this in the future.

Me personally, I would say that we need keep the handsanitizer out of camp. We have soap and water.

If some patrols take longer to get their camp chores done then there is less time for them to do activities. I agree that it is a learning exp. for the boys. Maybe poke in and ask the boys why they are taking so long. Maybe it is one boy who is not pulling thier share of the load. a quick conference with the PL or SPL may remidy (*sp*) this. But remember to let the Boy leadership correct it, just provide guidance.

As for the adult patrols, I am all for them. I have been helping out with the Troop that my son will be moving to in a couple of years, ( now that they are back in action) and I can see where they could use the help. All the parents work. So a week at summer camp may be split with several different leaders. Like SM and AMS on Sun - Wed. Then 2 ASM's Wed through Sat. and the SM comes back on Saturday to help with packing. Thhings would just work better. I think that if the adults show a good patrol method then the boys can learn from that. They still look to us for guidance, even though they may not admit it.

  9. Thank you ScoutNut. I could not remember where I saw the reference to the neighbor.

I think that if you are in the type of area/neighborhood where your know your neighbor and trust yoru neighbor, and that person is able to bring the Tiger in your absense, then why not. I would not say this is recommended for everytime, but there are certain circumstances.

Yes 5 boys is enough to start their own den. Maybe talk with the current leader and discuss splitting the den. These things can make for a better program if the schedule fits the leaders and parents time. I know of one pack in my area that meets on Sunday afternoon at thier chhurch, between worship and Sunday night activities.

I tell you that I would love it if some my Webelos den would meet at a different time. We would have a lot less boys running around the Cub Scout room. But things just work for the better right now. The Tigers that are in our den are meeting in a different location, but still on the same night.

Artirk, Good luck and I hope things work out for the best.

  10. She did not say that it was the leader that would be taking her son. She said that there would be another parent. I will have to find specifically where it is stated, but it said that the adult partner could be a parent, grandparent, other adult relative, or nieghbor (Yes I saw it and as sooon as can find it I will post my reference)

But if we are going to pick apart all of the little things. THen if a family has twins or triplets, do they have to have an adult for EVERY Tiger Cub. They might have to find another adult.

Lets use common sense here. If there is a situation like this, as long as there is an adult (Prefereably other than the Leader) that is willing to take responsibility and has the permission slip then why can the boy not attend. How many times a year do you repeat the same Go-See-Its.

  11. I know that there are many different opinions on who can hold what responsibilities. So here is my question. Is there anything that is written that prevents a Committee Member from serving as Assistant Cubmaster also. I have a guy that is thinking about this, since he pretty much is my right hand man already.

  12. Joff

That is so Cool. I tried it with my cell phone. It works and comes across as a text message. I think that I will see what other parents can use this.

I like this idea. Do you know if there are any spam associated with this or is it just like using regular texts.

  13. INteresting topic. When it comes to display cases you can try several different things. Do you have a lot of patches to display. maybe try using poster frames from wal-mart and back it with red felt like a patch blanket. not all that professional looking but it could serve the purpose.

With so many businesses going out of business maybe you could look into them donating their old glass display counters.

Maybe you may be able find someplace that may have one of the old map display cases. You know the one with the pull out flat racks. You may be able to use that for display also. Just some thoughts.

  14. As for the toilet issue, you must has latrine facilities. Pit privies, portajohns, stuff like that. You also need potable water.

That is the way that our rules are.

Make sure that you have someone who is baloo trained, or your tour permit will not get approved.

    Good luck and have fun.

  15. I have to agree with GKlose

SAM Splints are GREAT. I love'em. They are so versitile, and can be cut with a pair of first aid scissors. Most are x-ray translucent so they don't have to be taken off right away. Not to mention they can be flattened out to fit in any first aid kit. And they are very strong.

Here is a link to a list of videos that you can watch on the different uses of the sam splint.

    http://www.sammedical.com/sam_splint.html

    Usless trivia for the Day.

The name SAM for the Sam Splint is actually the name of the guy that invented it, he was a combat medic in vietnam and was playing with some wrigleys spearmint gum, folded it in half the long way, and there was born the SAM Splint. Yes it also stands for Soft, Aluminum (sp) and maleable (SP).

  16. I saw some mention of some of the new major trauma bandages and dressings.

The Quikclot powder that is out there is great. I would only recommend this for the troop level first aid kit and more importantly if you have a doctor or trained EMT in your troop. There are a lot of complications that can happen with this powder. Mostly it causes checical burns at the contact site. Mostly because it is a chemical reaction. So only use when you have no other option. I can tell you that I have been in Emergency medicine for 12 years and the only time that I have ever had to use it was once when I was deployed to Iraq. And I do not think that our scouts are going to be dealing with large explosions.

THe bandages are the same way, they are a little better, less complications, but only for dire emergencies. They both are also very expensive.

    Hope this information helps.

  17. I think after reading the posts and sugestions here:

It is apparent that scouting is the world to this young man. It sounds like he is every scoutmaster dream to have a boy that is this dedicated.

OF course there seems like there are some things that need to be resolved at home. Maybe talk with the lad about things that are going on at home. YOu don't know and maybe he has been put aside for the younger child.

Talk with this young lad and tell him that there is always someone there to help with his school work, and that school is just as important as scouting.

Let him start working on being a mentor again. THis young lad obviously likes that part of scouting. Maybe make him an insturctor for the younger scouts.

I guess I may be rambling at this point, but mostly he needs to be told that he is welcome in the troop and that he needs to keep his grades up. If he can do both then it will show that he is just that much better a person.

  18. I recently had this question so I contacted my my DE and this is what I got for an answer.

Accordig to G2SS, BB and archery is only alowed at District and COuncil Activities. THerfore they have set forth a rule that only Registered Scouts (I guess this includes boy scouts) can participate in the BB GUn and Archery ranges. My DE told me that she had no problem telling a sibling that they could not shoot. This was an insurance issue and she would be more than happy to be the BAD GUY/GAL, as that was the downside to her job.

That is what I got for an answer. Hope it helps
