  1. Cambridgeskip. I am in CH part of the BSA'a Transatlantic Council. There are several BSA Units in the UK area, and a good friend on mine from my Bobwhite Patrol at Woodbadge is there. You can also get in touvh with the BSA in UK Units and get to know up close and personal the BSA.

    Welcome BTW!

  2. There's word going around that the New Camp Freedom will not be used in the future for Scout Summer Camp. No Pool.. and it's too small. So Camp Alpine, and Garmish are taking up the slack in the future..

  3. I don't want to give up too much about the "Game of Life". Better not give away what it's about to others. I was told that one course here had someone who was called by a friend and told what it was all about. The Students all found out from him, so the outcome wasn't the same. I liked the Game of Life, and found it most interesting. Also my Patrol was suffering at first, but seeing what all of the others were doing we just sit back and was in shock with what others were doing. One guy saying one thing and doing another for example. He was due to be on Staff for this course, but couldn't make it. Anyway, I liked the game and see the need for it. I was also told by my Current SM/CD that his First Staff TG job Patrol is still not talking to one another after the course.

  4. I was at WB Staff-Development last weekend, and heard many of the stories from others that had problems during the Forming, Storming, Norming, and Preforming part of the course.

Now from within my Patrol, and due to all of the work done during the course, didn't really see any of the problems going on in other Patrols. Our Patrol go on, and really never Stormed. But I've heard from others some really crazy stories. Arguments, even fist fights. Even Participants refusing to work their or even write a Ticket.

Now, I ask this, to help me better to understand what I am getting involved in. I know I have to keep my distance from this, and keep my Leadership informed of these matters while on course. But I was wondering if any of you have had any experience with problems during the Patrol Development part of the Course.

BTW, This isn't a Course bashing thread. Just a thread to help me gain knowledge in this part to help me better to understand these problems from the course.

    Thanks in advance,

    SB

  5. I've had a hard time getting to my phone in my shoulder pocket, so I tend to carry it in a chest pocket.. I like the idea of sewing the patch through the pocket.. I found some patches from the pre-ODL period uniforms in boy size smalls. I had a look at the boys shirts at the temp patches, and they too were sewn all the way through the pocket. So even many of the younger boys don't use the chest pockets either..

  6. While at WB Staff-D last weekend, we were told by several who had attended the National Conference, that national brought in the shoulder /Tech pocket to recognize the change in scouting, and technology. Think how much of the training is going on-line. And you can now have several docs like the Scout Handbook in an Apps format on your telephone. The BSA is trying to stay up with the times. and mostly the old school scouters are knocking the advancements. Not the younger scouts. We were given several examples of old school new school stuff. and most were from when I was a boy.. so changed made 30 years ago and Scouter back then were made unhappy. Like the ODL uniform wasn't liked in the beginning..

  7. I'm serving on WB Staff this year. My question would be , how can they expect Venturer Leaders to wear the Tan uniforms? And should they? Our Scribe is a long experienced Scouter, who came back to Scribe to bring his vast experience to the Course. I have ben asking him about his Scouting history, and WB experience. He has been more then helpful. He went to WB in 1971. He was telling me how they used to require the Staffers to simplify their uniforms by taking off but the basic patches. Not unit numbers, or knots or position patches. Everyone had to have a Smoky the bear hat, and a red Jac Shirt. Also they had to have brown shoes. I can see doing this, as the course was slip up into the different programs back then. But now it's one program course. so how should this or can this be done?

  8. @ SSScout, I have a nice Filson Wool MACKINAW CRUISER in Dark Grey. Talk about a great jacket.. works in the rain, and the snow perfect..

@old ox eagle, could you post a picture of your ID jacket with all of those patches sewn up. I'd like to see that.. the red one looks great with the colorful patches on it, but I can't picture the OD one with them sewn up..

BTW, We've (Staff Members) have been asked to bring our red Jacs to Woodbadge to wear for the course picture.

  9. I have been looking into this for almost two years going now. And the new TLT is lacking a lot. The older stuff seems more in line with what is missing in TLT. But getting my boys to take a longer training course is the problem. I am sending boys to NYLT, but I need all of my new boy leaders to train in the more extensive NYLT, and I can't get all of them there. We plan to have the boys that go to NYLT to come back and train the Patrol Leaders this next year. But more needs to be done.

Planning, organization, camping skills that have been missing from the program for too many years.

  10. drmbear, I got myself one of my Council Fleece Jackets from my Council Scout SHop. Works great, and I can add patches to it like my Totem Patch which I had made up through a friend with an embroidery shop. Now my Red, and Green Jac Shirts, i keep to the standard of the Uniform Guide, and that way no problems. But I see several people in council wearing special patches they earned on their Red Jacs. SO it becomes very personal.

I do agree with the development of better outdoor kit from National. I guess the new Soft Shells is a good direction, but I'm not a fan. But they do look good. I wish they'd bring back the Boy's Life WOol Jackets for the Boys..
