  1. Here is does just that. It models, but lacks in explaining it I found. But our courses are all outdoors. Seperate camp sites, Patrol forming, elections, chain of command, dealing with the SPL, and not the TG. I was on site some of the time to give classes to the patrol I was with , but not mothering them. Some did. The Patrols do learn the Patrol Method, we make it a point to explain it. and there is some explanation in the guide. but not enough. On the other hand they do act as a Patrol the second after the B&G. Before being a Den.

  2. There are many things going on this Day1. But dealing with the question, Patrols start with Aims and Methods of Scouting, Leadership positions, Patrol Elections, and Appointments, Start, Stop, Continue. There is a Game "The Patrol Method". But found that this game wasn't very productive in learning the Patrol Method. More should be done.

Kudu, I find you to be lobbying to have the old course brought back, (BTW, I think that the older model should be brought back but also adding the new course)and doing all you can to show that the new course isn't what it should be. I just spent a year with a master of WB, and someone who has attended the old and the new. He has Staffed more courses then i can count. I've asked him about the great argument of which is better, why was there a change, what has happened to the older skills that used to be learned. I've spoke to several people who've taken both courses, and they have all said to me that the new course is a better course. Due to the leadership it teaches. They all say that the skills are either being learned at the Scouter's level or before hand. I've learned most before Scouting. Where many say they've learned the new skills already. Myself being a former Soldier can also say that I've learned Leadership lessons from the new course that I didn't get in the Army. And so has many others. So I can say that the new course is a good course. I found that the new course, (The only course I know) has made me look deep into myself, and search in ways that I never searched before. I have learned to listen in ways, and use most of the skills in dealing with the problems I am experiencing with the Scouts and Scouters today. I do think the Course has lost a lot of the outdoor that used to be in the older course, and this is sad. I don't understand why the change, but i have read all of your writings and findings. I do feel that the new course touches base with 90% of the problems I face in Scouting. I think that a more outdoor related course needs to be developed, and that one I would attend. Not because I don't know the outdoors, but because I'm open to the idea that there is always more to learn, and I love learning. I feel that many of the problems I read about with WB is Perception. I faced a bit of that this course I staffed in August when two participants found that they didn't like me..OH, well, I hate it that I wasn't up t where they thought I should be, but the other 35 really had a lot of good to say about me. I am a very outgoing person, and some have a hard time with that..Goes back to my Army days. You couldn't be happy in the worst of it, then you weren't doing what we were doing.. anyway, thanks for your valuable in put and information on here. I enjoy reading your posts, and look forward to more.

  3. I am looking in my WB Course 2011 book and on pages 53 is the Patrol Leader Installation, Patrol Leader Oath, and the SM Minute.

Pages 55-63 discuss the PLC, and the day's agenda. I know from my course that the Patrol Method is something discussed often, and amongst patrol members. also the SPL spoke about this during this PLC.

  4. CHL, very good points, and each participant is different. I had one who was a 23 year old, Eagle Scout, and special need. He had a very good vision, and some interesting goals, I liked them but the SM didn't like them all. He wanted to push the guy a bit more, and even though the guy called home cried, and was upset, did write two more better goals, that pushed him more then a new cook book, etc.. in the end the Participant will get more from his ticket, work a bit harder, and give a bit more back to him Troop, District, and the council. BTW, the SM also has a Special needs child who is not only an Eagle Scout but has reached the highest level of Venturing, and is the Associate Lodge Chief. So the SM was right in pushing this one guy a bit harder. I went back and read my Vision, and Ticket, and saw where my ticket wasn't as hard as many, but was very important to getting my troop back on the Patrol method, and the boy lead approach, which now the troop is doing. Your ticket is never finished, and the work is never done. Some like this participant wanted very much to do specific goals, and I told then they still can work those goals, but not in the Ticket. . On thing I have had to re-learn in Scouting is Family first..so I understand a DE needing to work on his marriage..

  5. I took WB21C last year, beaded this past Spring, Staffed WB this month. I think that everyone has something to learn in the course. Sure there are always those who think they know it all. OK, not a problem. I don't think anyone should be pushed into taking the course, and maybe not everyone is cut out for the course. It does get very emotional and many have a hard time with that. I saw it on this past course with one almost quiting, and several crying during the ticket process. I find you get out of something what you put into it. If your not ready to put into it, then let it be. I just did my Ordeal into OA this month, and found it great. I went into it without doing any research, or asking questions, I kept my eyes, and ears open, and my mouth shut. Had a great time, and can't wait to bring more cheerful service to my unit. Also can't wait til Brotherhood. (Man that song is hard to learn?).. anyway, it doesn't sound very scout like when two adults argue about stuff like this. I would recommend they first stop that, and then remember why they are involved in scouting. I think that they could use some Forming, Storming, Norming and Preforming at the course.

  6. I just got back from Staffing WB last week. the course went very well. One thing that did come out negative was a few people's perspective of myself. But I don't know who had a problem with me, but they were the only two. I even got gifts from other Patrols?? Anyway, does bug me a little, because I don't know what the problem for them was. I prefer to find out these things and speck directly with the person(s) involved. As for the females on the course, I barely spoke to any of them???

Kudu, as for the Game of Life, I can^t speak about how it used to be,, I only took the new course. I do agree that more about the Patrol Method should be taught, but I can't do much about that in WB. But I can as a UC, and ASM talk to leaders and educate them on the side..

  7. I've used the large canopy version as a central fire area. I took a Ray Mears course some years ago, and we used a large canopy chute. Keep all of the suspension lines attached, and cut two meter poles. We staked in the suspension lines at each pole, and using a long rope attached this to the appex and throwing the rope over a large OAK tree limb. Pulling the canopy up, and suspending it very high up. We had a large roaring fire underneath and plenty of space to sit. In fact we used cut logs to sit on. Worked great. I have one for my Troop in fact.

  8. BP your right. But dealing with Venturing now makes me forget what the heck I was doing 25 years ago sometimes.. Post! Post! Post!.. now maybe I can remember.. man it's been a while.. thanks.. BTW. I found a Post for my Cousin back home.. trying to get him involved in Venturing, but no Crews back home. But a Post?

  9. Course N2-802-11-1 will be held in Bavaria, Germany. Oberdachstetten. It's a great place for a course.

I just though I'd post the course on here because firstly, I was told it's hard for some to get on course in some Councils in the States. And second, we are getting several people from the States coming over to take the course. It's a 6x1 course. So you get it done and over with in one week. Also the location is wonderful. We had a several people last year fly over for the course. and this year we have several flying in from several other countries outside of the EU.

  11. I still haven't gotten mine yet. But I wore my older Venturing shirt to camp Monday on a day visit, and it was bloody hot as well. So I don't think any shirt would be kool enough standing out in the sun or sitting in a wind less shade. Base! did you wear a t-shirt under the new shirt? Sometimes I find that any shirt with a collar will do as your did slidding to the rear of the shoulders.. I have the same problem with all of my shirts.
